Can you prove this statement that chewing tobacco, not smoking, affects insurance costs more than alcohol? Yes, many clubs do have restrictions, many but not all.

Fairness, uniformity, anti hypocrisy. Not that any of us are pro ball players, but I can sympathize. My workplace (a college) recently banned all forms of tobacco and while I disagree, I understand why. Same reason I understand why the powers that be banned the keg parties the old timers tell me they used to have many years ago for employees every other Friday after work. While it would be awesome to still have those, the horrible things that can happen when a few dozen people drive home after hours of drinking were understandably enough to cancel that. And I’m as pro beer as it comes, I’m a home brewer!

That was obviously hyperbole, but you knew that. The same arguments you make for banning tobacco can be made for banning booze. Immediate impact, long term health concerns, fan interaction. Or is that not correct?

I don’t buy your last point. Maybe from a fan standpoint, yes. But there’s zero reason it should be in any clubhouse if other things aren’t. Beer is no more ingrained to the players than tobacco. It’s not that it’s easier, it just costs less to ban it.

The organization that says you can’t dip in the dugout allows you to drink in the clubhouse. How is this so hard to understand.

Oh stop don’t be ridiculous. I worked in baseball for several years at a place that had josh hancock’s Jersey hanging in the clubhouse right next to trash cans full of empty beer cans

Yeah, but I highly doubt you’ll find too many places that won’t let you take a smoke break but will allow you to down a 6 pack on lunch.

Like they say “impairment starts with the first drink” Maybe a small percentage of people who drink are addicted, but something like 13% of the adult population is considering to be alcoholics. So if tobacco use is around 6%..

That it’s far more dangerous than dipping tobacco and mlb allows their employees to use it in their clubhouses and their fans to use it in their stadiums, and also profits from it. Sheesh I didn’t know this would be that difficult to comprehend.

There are plenty of laws already concerning use of cars. What point exactly where you trying to make here? It’s always interesting to see how hard some people fight to make sure other people can’t enjoy things that have nothing to do with them.

Believe me, I love my beer drinking as well (I have all the bad habits) so I’m not put off by any of the advertising. I just have a problem with the selectivity of it all. Sure, baseball and tobacco will always be linked and no that’s not a great thing for the kids to see. But I can parent my kids about substance abuse, I don’t need buxton to toss out his wad of dip to make my job any easier.

Are you going to act like alcohol is not far and away a bigger threat to the health, safety and well being of not only the user but possibly those around them than some skoal? Is that going to be your argument? But alas $$$$$$$ talks

I think the very nature of baseball lends itself to such a habit. Same reason seeds and bubblegum are popular with players. Not really with you on the argument not carrying weight. It’s selective enforcement and incredibly hypocritical, especially when alcohol is not only allowed but the league gladly profits from it. How about showing locker room celebrations where dudes are dousing each other in booze? What does that do for the young kids watching? I mean, banning tobacco in entire stadiums is laughable. “Miller park”, “Busch stadium” lol how about “Copenhagen ballpark”? Have you ever looked at the salt content of sunflower seeds? I would want my employees on a low sodium diet if I’m going to be responsible for their health care!

What does throwing a dozen Budweiser ads up per game do for perpetuating bad habits amongst fans? I can’t think of a single televised sporting event I’ve ever seen where alcohol wasn’t a prominent advertiser.

Ok then, ban sodas, hot dogs, hamburgers and all unhealthy food from the parks and clubhouses. Heck, alcohol isn’t even banned in all clubhouses, and even where it is I can guarantee the rule isn’t followed. Also, they should stop taking advertising bucks from any breweries and we all know that won’t happen. Alcohol has ruined countless more lives, is more widely abused and is responsible for many more deaths than dipping. Think of how many ball players dip and you can name one who died from it. There have probably been more DUI deaths from players leaving stadiums at all levels than guys who’s jaws have fallen off. It’s selective, feel good policing. That’s all.

I didn’t start dipping because I saw a baseball player on tv do it. It was actually a guy at work that got me into it. Obviously I’m aware of the health issues but once a day suits me just fine.

So 1/3 of major leaguers dip or chew and only 6% of nonplaying males use it. I wonder how many players drink heavily? Just because we can’t see them do it doesn’t make much of a difference. Hardly seems like much to worry about. Unlike smoking, it only affects the user, unless you are squeamish about people spitting. These guys are going to parks like 9 months out of the year. Let them have a little something. Maybe require some preseason education about he dangers of using. Not a big deal IMO, just something for some folks to feel good about.

Article: NYY 4, MIN 1: Twins Fizzle, Bronx Drizzles
Aggies7 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If there was ever a time to go into NY and take a series or sweep, this was it. Outside of Sanchez, voit, and possibly andujar (just back from the DL), there were few threats in the Yankees lineup. Paxton and Happ were not great either. Friday night’s game should have been a win but the defense was bad from the start. Kind of feels like the twins played down to the level of competition in this series. Pineda and Gibson must be more consistent for the team to really contend for big things. Perez is still a question mark for me despite his recent success. Going to be hard to go far if the whole staff outside of two guys is a question mark. -
Anyone with a chance at being a part of the future should get a crack over the next 55 games. Simply no reason (unless the worry is stunted growth) that we should keep trotting out the junk over the prospects. This looks to be another lengthy rebuild. It hurt to type that.

Article: MIL 6, MIN 5: Oh, That Rodney Experience
Aggies7 replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Right now, there is not one facet of baseball that this team excels in. Not one. I know some of the players currently here were never in the plans to be here. I'm sure nobody expected or wanted bobby wilson to catch as many games or have someone like willians a. at third base, or have someone like littell on the mound in extra innings. All that being said, if you aren't going to bring a lot of talent, you'd better at least be somewhat solid in fundamentals. This team isn't, at all. And it's not just the new guys or the emergency roster spot takers. It's everyone. Just from last night's game you had: -dozier falling for the oldest trick in the book, a runner at first trying to get into a rundown to avoid a DP -2nd and 3rd nobody out, and 3 awful at bats by rosario, dozier and grossman. dozier should have been called out before his grounder -wilson being unable to get down a bunt and for some mind blowing reason, he was still allowed to swing away in the 9th -escobar's base running blunder in the 9th -on the tying sacrifice fly, kepler threw home with zero chance to get the runner, allowing the winning run to advance to third This is a team obviously low on talent, but it's also poorly coached. Someone mentioned a lack of "fire", the team hasn't show any for an extended period after that stretch of postponements in early april. They are (poorly) going through the motions, vets rookies and coaching alike. Baseball has been played for over 150 years and the teams that end up with bad records all have the same characteristics this team is showing. -
Is there going to be a ballgame today or is it still too hot for our boys? You’ve gotta be kidding me, lol this is baseball, in the summer. It gets hot! So let’s see, we can’t play in April and parts of may because it’s too cold. We can’t play in July or August because it’s too hot. So we’ll start midway though may, play all of June (maybe) and then playoffs for September What a hoot!
