Article: Looking Back: Twins 40-Man Roster Additions
sane replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
IMO, he should have been protected rather than Pat Dean. Maybe the Twins were afraid to give ZachJones any more time to regain his fastball due to a bad case of Mikepelfreyphobia.- 21 replies

That's true. I hope the Twins ARE privy to the medical consequences of his circulatory issues. If the issues can be corrected, and Jones is throwing 100 mph again for another team; the six pitchers that the Twins DID protect, had better pitch well enough to divert attention from Jones.- 21 replies

He ended 2015 at Fort Myers with 0.97 WHIP, 2.19 ERA, 38 K in 24.2 IP; K/9IP=13.86 Injuries have often been known to heal for 24-yr-olds. At my age, not so much.- 21 replies

I hope that Zach Jones is bypassed, but IMO he is likely to be the only one lost.- 21 replies

If the 2015 Rule5 draft parallels the 2014 draft (and that may be highly unlikely) the following numbers in various categories of players will be drafted. Starting Pitchers with strong arms - 3 Relief Pitchers with control issues - 3 Finesse Pitchers with good control - 3 Catchers - 1 Infielders - 2 Outfielders - 2 Total - 14 Using this link: http://www.baseballa...names-remember/.. the category in which Zach Jones fits (Relief Pitchers with control issues) had only three pitchers drafted last year. Their were 15 such pitchers listed in the website above. So, using very shaky theory, the odds of Zach Jones being drafted (in a parallel draft to 2014) would be ROUGHLY three out of 15, or 20%. That is comforting for those of us who wish to maintain Zach Jones in the Twins organization. Please don't send this to my ex-teachers or ex-bosses. They may want my diplomas, degrees and pay-checks returned.

That list has 46 players and only 14 were selected last year. If all players were equal, we would have about a 50% chance of escaping unharmed.

My point is that the Twins (or any company) that demonstrates to players (employees) that hard work is valued as much (or more) than God-given talent will encourage hard work in their players (employees). This tactic is used for motivational purposes almost universally, and I'm sure the Twins are aware of it and most likely use it. That may (or may not) be the result or even the purpose of the Dean promotion, but as my caveat reads, I am an outsider regarding Twins decision making.

1) They have all been to the Twins Minor League Spring Training camp for three to five years from late February to early April where: 2) Baseball players often speak to each other at batting cages, bullpens, team meetings, pitchers meetings, meals, workouts, weight lifting, bull-**** sessions and local establishments. 3) They often speak to each other about "why were you and I passed over for THAT guy?" 4) They all speak to their own teammates and often on the subject of the teammates' teammates. 5) During ST,usually they talk to other players more frequently, than to their own family and friends.

2003 Rule 5 draft[edit] "the Pirates lost five prospects from their minor league system with the first six picks in the 2003 Rule 5 draft, even though they had unused spots on their 40-man roster and could have protected several of the players if they had chosen to do so. Chris Shelton, who had recently been honored as the team's minor league player of the year, went with the first pick, and he was followed in short order by Rich Thompson, Frank Brooks, Jeff Bennett, and José Bautista.[1] Baseball executives present at the draft laughed openly at Littlefield's embarrassment, and the laughter intensified after the Pirates declined to make a pick of their own.[1] The Cincinnati Reds, picking seventh, had all five Pirate players listed on their draft board and were frustrated to see them all go too soon, and an anonymous executive from another American League team said that his team had also planned to take a Pirate prospect, refraining only because in his words, "There wasn't anything left."[1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Littlefield

As an outsider to the Twins decision-making, I am going to take a guess on the Dean decision. Sometimes you reward the guy who out-works all of your prospects, because all of your prospects will learn that hard work often results in rewards. THAT MESSAGE to ALL of your prospects is worth more than the 41st man on the roster who isn't working hard enough.
