  1. WOW!! This is tougher than it looks. Easy to cut/non-tender Plouffe and Grossman. Easy to keep Buxton and Escobar and then trade Dozier or Polanco and put the other at 2B. Now you have got a whole bunch of offensive threats with no defensive ability. I would try Sano at 3B, and rotate Park, Mauer (untradeable) and Vargas at 1B/DH. That's 7. Keep Walker and Palko on the 40 man...probably Nico too. As to the rest...don't know--trade some for pitching and catching help...speaking of catcher...to me Centano, Murphy, Turner and whomever are all blah...find a catcher keep Turner as back up...this team needs a major overhaul...focus on keeping guys under 25 with potential...
  2. Probably the worst...definitely the worst pitching team...but most importantly one of the worst defenses in MLB history which allows extra bases and outs hurting the pitching. Somewhere (except for maybe Torii last year) Terry Ryan forgot about looking at defense when resigning/signing/trading players.
  3. I am old school--use eyeball test rather than metrics--but metrics confirm what my eyes see--Twins defense sucks--an outfield of Grossman, Kepler and Rosario probably gives teams an extra out or two a game and makes it tougher on the pitchers. Buxton needs to be up cause he can make OF defense (somewhat) respectable...Twins need to start emphasizing defense in minors--cause people coming up don't know fundamentals...
  4. This is depressing...our best trade chips are the prospects like Buxton, Berrios, Gonsalves and Kepler. Dozier, Plouffe, etc. have little value. I think the answer is to package one of the big prospects, Plouffe and a couple of lower prospects for the best we can get... Keep Sano, Park, and Duffey--anybody else on the MLB roster can go.
  5. For me, the most important thing the next GM will do is to hire a direct of player development. The Twins of 10-12 years ago were built from within--Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, Torri, etc. were all high draft picks that matured. Since Mauer our top picks have floundered. If you build a team from within, you don't have to spend the free agent bucks on the big parts, just fill in the weaknesses. Why have our draft picks floundered. I don't know. I know that Buxton--considered a top 5 prospect by everybody hasn't been able to develop. Gibson, Plouffe, etc. have become at best mediocre. Some (Gomez, Span) have done better with a change of scenery. A new director of player development working with a new GM must make changes so guys like Stewart, Gonsalves, Gordon, etc. do develop into more than mediocre.
  6. Good article but I disagree with the basic premise...the kids should be here and learning at the MLB level. The Twins are not going make playoffs--and likely wont win 75 games. Give the kids experience. Play Buxton in the OF, put Berrios, Meyer and Duffey in rotation. What does keeping Nolasco, Mastro, etc. do for the future. And this bit of one bad game and back to Rochester has to stop!!! If Molitar cant deal with youth (and I have my doubts) bring up Dougie or Jake who can.
  7. Yes, give him extra coaching at Rochester. Let him stay there no matter what until at least the end of July and pick up ABs.
  8. I hope this game doesn't give Nolasco the starting spot. It was against a more than watered down team--basically 2nd tier minor leaguers. Nolasco needs to go.
  9. Yes, Polanco needs work especially on his defense before he gets handed a starting job. A year at Rochester playing SS can not hurt--bring him up only as injury cover.
  10. great article as usual Seth--but you missed something I read in Yahoo. Sir Rodney was prescribed a drug (Statin??) but stopped taking it after a few weeks. You cant do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am way up there in years. I have been on a statin for the last 5. My MD said you take it everyday for the rest of your life (and I do--maybe forget 2 times a month). I want to see both my grandsons graduate from high school--youngest born this January. Good luck to Sir Rodney and good he is doing this. Looking forward to seeing him at Spring training.
  11. Another great interview Seth. I hope first the Twins don't rush Gonsalves but let him stay in Ft. Myers at least the first half of the season. I hope second, he doesn't get hit by the injury bug that have plagued other pitching prospects moving up the system (see Gibson and Wimmers a few years back).
  12. I used to care about the HOF...I don't anymore...too many borderline guys got in (Carter, Marty Marion, Catfish)...without Bonds and Clemons and Rose and Shoeless Joe it feels incomplete. I agree with Mike until Kaat and Tommy John get in, why worry about Mussina and Schilling.
  13. I don't know enough to agree or disagree with your analysis. I do know that every agreement has hurt the fans over the past 20-25 years by lengthening calls to bullpen and between inning breaks. I don't want to see rosters expand and 15 men bullpens!!! In Maryland we have Cal Ripken summer league (college kids wood bats). Good games that are fun to watch with no tv timeouts. I expect these could grow if minor leagues shrink...that would be a good thing.
  14. Thanks Seth as always a great article--love reading about the guys trying to make it up who are now down in the low levels.
  15. I feel old everyday--that's what happens when you are a grandpa and on medicare I guess. Kudos to Cuddy for walking away (and leaving money on the table) before he got too old. One of my early baseball memories is seeing Willie Mays in CF for the Mets and a shell of himself--probably played 2 years too long. Great article Seth and yes, it will be interesting to see which of the current Twins prospects is playing in 2030.
  16. Again pure speculation--but there will definitely be a job open here in DC this winter. Wouldn't be surprised to see Doug interviewed even if he doesn't get job.
  17. Dougie Baseball had 2 years with most of these guys (Walker, Polanco, Buxton, etc.) and did very well with them as they developed. I would love to see him come here to DC. You are right. Matt Williams is a real bad manager and did nothing with the talent he was given and has no clue on managing his bullpen.
  18. Brett was my AAP in 2013 and 2014. I have still been following him closely in 2015 and noticed that he turned his season around in August (like he did second half of 2013 for Kernels). I know he had a great month--still surprised you named him pitcher of month over Berrios--don't disagree--don't have your expertise but I think I would have gone with Berrios. And yes very disappointed Berrios wont see time with Twins in Sept. even to just get feel of life in the show.
  19. thanks for article Matt. I enjoy reading all of your postings here. A different perspective for me--I am retired--I survived 40 years working in the "real world". Hope you can avoid that place for quite a few years.
  20. Good point. I don't have Seth's expertise. A month ago, I would have said dump Peavey and move up Brett Lee and Gonsalves. Now maybe move Berrios up to Rochester--maybe DL a pitcher--then move Lee up to Chat. and Gonsalves to Miracle. It is tougher than it looks.
  21. It is past time for Brett lee to move up to Chattanooga and Gonsalves to take his spot on the Miracle.
  22. I dagree wit EMPL... Brett Lee should have started the season in Chattanooga with the rest of the guys who won the FSL title at Ft. Myers in 2014 and did almost as well in Cedar Rapids in 2013 (and yes that second half year Brett was the ace of the Kernels. any doubts were erased tonight. Brett went 7.1 IP--left the game with the lead (it went 10 innings-got 13 GO to 3 flies. He only had 3 Ks... but didn't need more.
  23. I agree--Brett has nothing to prove at Ft. Myers. He was my AAP in 2013 and 2014. I was extremely (bad word) that he didn't start the season in Chattanooga. He was the best pitcher at Cedar Rapids in the second half of 2013. He made the AS team at Ft. Myers in 2014. His ERA has been on the right side of 3.00 all three years in the Twins system, He even threw 2 complete games in 2013 and 2014 (that's 4 2 in each year).
