  1. I think the key to picking these kids, were 1: Not part of the 40 man crunch, lots of years of control left. 2: filled holes in the organisation. 3: were scouted using the new FO approach (no old scouting reports). This is basically like trading for draft picks, pro ball stats don't matter much at this point. Look at Baddoo first year.
  2. The one thing that is hardly mentioned is the fact the Twins do have to field a 25 man team. The rest of the guys are call ups during next season, if they're ready. So give and take free agents and and 60 man DL, that leaves 15 guys who are not ready for the Twins on your 40 man. Most people's lists have them adding a lot of P (which I agree with), but you still need position players as well. Currently The Twins only have 4 position players who are not on the 25 man roster. If you're not adding any position players, I don’t think the Twins should be dropping Vargas, Palka, Vielma, and Garver and replacing them for “not ready for prime time” pitchers. You’d only drop these guys if they sign or trade for position players. I agree with other posters that a low A 1B like Diaz is not getting selected, plus no reason to start burning his options this quickly. Stewart, Rodriguez, Thrope, and Moya are also givens to get added IMO along with the top 4 of Seth’s list.
  3. New name posted on BA's Twins signed list today. Nomar Urdaneta, ss, Venezuela. Not much on him. He's part of KPL Baseball Academy in Valencia, Venezuela. Had tryouts with the Dbacks and Dodgers.
  4. And that's just from the Dominican. If you look at the lists of top unsigned players they fall into 2 categories. Not yet 16 or from Venezuela. I think independent experts and sources are much stronger in DR. It will be interesting who the Twins sign from elsewhere.
  5. Acording to BA team tracker the Twins also signed an OF "Luis Baez, of, Dominican Republic, $300,000." With them expected to sign Carlos Aguiar and Mauro Bonifacio in Aug. It sounds like they have their Outfield set.
  6. Not many updates here lately... Nick Allen (ss) just sign with the A's in the 3rd round for 2 million. Top 30 draft prospect. Sound familiar? As the dust settles a few things are clear to me: -The Twins were looking for a top talent and wanted to save money for later in the draft. Lewis fit the bill. - The Twins were very high on Leach and didn't think he'd make it to the 3rd round. Leach was a late fast riser. This might have been because he played in Canada, and the fact that there wasn't a lot of hype on him before the draft. After the draft experts came back saying he was a great pick. People went back to check with their sources I guess. Also again, they saved money for other picks. - The Twins were banking on a top prep player like Carlson, Allen, or Enlow to fall to the 3rd. Allen and Enlow did, Carlson didn't. We know the Twins ranked Enlow higher than Allen (or they didn't want to draft two prep SS that high). We may never know if they had Carlson ranked higher than Enlow or the other way around. Anyway, its traditional to compare high picks with the guys selected around them. I might do the same with these 3 players.
  7. MLB Daily Dish has us signing everyone in our top 10 except Leach so far. Callis reported on Enlow signing for 2 mil today. I'm also wondering about pick 11 Gabriel Rodriguez. It's usally a high upside pick.
  8. When you quoted amjgt he said: "Not doing so, with as large of a draft pool as we were given, is essentially like giving up a top 100 draft pick." Now 'like a top 100 pick' isn't directly saying "Draft an extra top 100 pick" but the argument seems to be plan to spend the money on a top guy. Which only works if everyone signs. When really (In my opinion) the arugment should be once it clear you don't need your emergency money, spend it on a harder to sign pick from 11-40. None of the 11-40 guys are top 100 guys. Like I said, I agree with you. I just keep my saving account and my checking account separate until there is no reason to save anymore.
  9. I agree. But there is one reason for not spending it right away. What if one of your top 10 draft picks doesn't sign. You agree to a under slot deal, promise the money to someone else and.... they fail their physical. Do you offer them the same amount to make sure to keep the extra money in your draft pool? Do you offer the player less, what if they don't sign? The money should get spent, but only after all your top targets sign for what they agree too.
  10. A few different things. They can't play college ball anymore so they’re option after this year are limited, so their bonuses are usually only a few thousand dollars, not hundreds of thousands of dollars. If drafted in the top ten rounds, the team did this to save money to spend elsewhere in the draft. If drafted after the top ten rounds, the team is just looking to fill out their rookie league teams, and some scout suggested their name. They tend to only last a few years in the minors, getting replaced by top prospects or other senior signs. This isn’t always the case, after all, Brian Dozier was a senior sign. Dozier stock has always been... deflated because of it. He was always consider “old” for a prospect compared to the guys who sign out of high school. So even when he was a top 10 prospect, he was never the top prospect. He also will reach free agency at an older age, reducing his potential earnings. And though I can’t prove it, you'd think a 40 home run hitting, 2nd baseman All star would get more trade interest. His age I believe plays a factor in that as well.
  11. http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/236553468/twins-used-no-1-pick-to-have-best-2017-draft/ Jim Callis seems to thinks the Twins had the best draft!
  12. This draft will be measured in 3 ways (unfairly maybe) 1, Comparing Lewis to other top picks. It might not be Lewis vs Greene, it will be Lewis vs ‘whoever is the best of the top five’. If Gore (for example) starts becoming a superstar, it will turn into a “we should have draft Gore debate” and Greene, Wright, and McKay will be left out of the debate (especially if they end up doing nothing). 2, Comparing Lewis to everyone! If Alex Lange for example becomes the best from the draft, some people will conder Lewis a missed, cause Lange went 30th instead of 1st. 3, Carlson vs Enlow. If Carlson becomes super star, and Enlow never makes it past AA it will hit fans hard.
  13. That's part of the problem. You do the 'right' thing and go to college to get an education and play ball, you don't leave early, maybe your on scholarship, maybe not a full ride. But any debt you walk out you have no way of paying off once you sign that 1 grand deal. Then you don't leave early and stay all 4 years and that "hurts you". Then you need to get a credit card just to survive. More debt. Hoping you don't get hurt with an injury that affects you for the rest of your life. But it your choice after all they can always get someone from Latin America to do it for just as cheap (just hope those guys don't get an "on the job" Injury, they can get fired and lose their Visa). If this was the meat packing industry or any other industry we'd be disgusted with how people are treated for doing the right thing. But it's baseball, the game we love. We look the other way. But saying people have a choice to give them less then they need to live or they can walk away for basicly life, show's an abuse in a system, and that feels agenst the values we say we value. And on a diffrent note, Thanks to Jermey fo all he does. the time and info he puts in helps make this site. And congrats to everyone who got drafted.
  14. I'd be more sympathetic to that argument if they paid players at least the minimum wage once they get there. But the combination, just shows without representation in the negotiations players get treated horribly. It make minimum wage laws seem absolutely necessary.
  15. With the 100,000 Under 10th draft limit plus the 224,600 they've saved, means they can offer someone 5th round money (or spread it out to a few guys). Interesting to see how the top 10 settles out.
