  1. We moved here in 1988. By 1999, our house had tripled in value and seemed very expensive. (Of course it's doubled again since.)
  2. No kidding! My wife and I freaked out traveling across Europe. The green cross over there is just a symbol for a standard pharmacy. Driving through tiny villages and seeing green crosses kind of freaked us out until we figured out that it meant something different.
  3. It's all in where you live and work. I live a mile from campus, so a 20 minute walk when the weather is decent or a 5 minute drive when it's not. Agreed about missing baseball, but it's kind of nice not to have a die-hard local following rooting against the Twins. Many locals are Mariners' fans, but few are intense and many follow their childhood clubs from wherever. I've spent most of my adult life rooting against the local teams where I've lived. It gets old.
  4. I think of Portland as 2/3 Minneapolis and 1/3 Bay Area. I've lived both places and loved both places, so it's no surprise that I love Portland. I've been told that Portland was settled more by Easterners in comparison to Seattle by Midwesterners, but I sure don't see much Boston or New York in the people here.
  5. When I read the title, I wasn't sure which kind of "promotion" you meant. When I saw the picture of the hideous Star Wars uniforms, I actually thought it was the other kind (until I read, of course). I love having your picture, Seth, but if the Star Wars uniforms were on my hard drive, I'd wear out the delete key.
  6. Seems like he will need an injury to one of Rosario, Buxton, Kepler, Grossman, Vargas, or Mauer to find a spot. I don't think Grossman and Vargas can coexist on the roster as essentially pure DHs. Actually, it's pretty amazing that all six of those guys have been healthy all season and we're already into June. (Or was Vargas hurt for a bit?)
  7. I was distracted and didn't watch every at-bat (and had to watch the Seattle broadcast because of blackout rules), but every hit I saw was a ground ball to short for which Adrianza lunged and missed. From what I saw it seemed like if Lindor had been playing SS behind him, he might have had a quite respectable result.
  8. Adrianza *almost makes* every play tonight. Are the Mariners just lucky and placing the ball perfectly, or is his range compromised?
  9. The most amazing celebration I can remember for someone who was not #1 overall. He and his family recognized what a wonderful opportunity he had received, and his attitude since then has been 100% positive.
  10. Wow, McKay looks like he's about to cry after getting picked 4th. Contrast with Berrios a few years ago...
  11. How about "Biggie"? Kind of like "Miggie" when your allergies are really, really bad.
  12. I agree 100%. There is nothing better than Twins games starting at 5:00 PT (or 4:00 from the East) and finishing before my (early) bedtime. I get into routines and find it hard to break them. A couple of years ago I lived in Europe during much of the English football season. I was so used to watching my favorite team at 7am Pacific time that it was really difficult to watch in the afternoon, which is the "normal" time.
  13. I have a bit more confidence in the front office after the Dozier saga last winter. That, too, was an obvious trade-the-veteran-for-kids situation for a building club, but they resisted when they didn't get a return that they thought was good. (Of course, none of us can really know for sure what offers were turned down.) Based on that sample of one, I doubt that the Twins will trade Santana without getting a satisfactory package in exchange.
  14. I love the presence of a Twins' game write-up! That's the one thing that has been missing from TD and I hope it becomes a regular feature. When I can't watch a game I sometimes feel better informed about the minor league games than the majors, but a nice write-up of the Twins's game fills that void nicely!
  15. After giving up eating meat 18 years ago, one of the few things that I genuinely missed was good sausage. After trying out hundreds of abominations pretending to be sausages or hot dogs, I finally found the veggie sausage of my dreams and they are made in ... Seattle. Seriously, if you even have a need/want for a really tasty veggie sausage or hot dog, try Field Roast. Whole Foods carries them (and a lot of other places in Portland, at least). Field Roast franks on a good roll with actual French mustard (Fallot is my favorite) and my wife's green tomato relish. Yum!
  16. Sioux Falls always makes me think of soufflés. Is there a good French restaurant there? If not, someone should open one. If it were located at the foot of the falls it could be called "Sous Falls."
  17. The photo in the header reminds me of one of my favorite bronze street sculptures, but how do i post a picture???
  18. "leave a runner in scorning position" I like this! Our pitchers need to scorn those runners more often!
  19. Wow, those are the ugliest uniforms I've ever seen. My first thought looking at the picture was "recycled breakfast."
