Bummer. I got my copy about two weeks ago, but I'll be enjoying a Twins/Gophers doubleheader on Thursday. Rocky afternoon and Boilermaker nightcap!

Okay, I'm going to nitpick, but Melotakis hasn't struck out a batter over the last five appearances (6 innings). His SO/9 mark has dropped to 5.7, the lowest of his minor league career. Conversely, his BB/9 rate is at an career low of 0.7. Any cause for concern? Is there a site somewhere that provides a breakdown of his his pitch mix? MPH on the gun?

Article: The Lurking Late-Inning Limbo
Don't Feed the Greed Guy replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"The Prophetic Writings of Sir Nelson" -
Excellent comparison. Blackburn put up very respectable mid-to-back of the rotation numbers during his age 26 & 27 seasons, followed by two miserable seasons. Same with Gibson. Blackburn was gone at age 30. However, the Twins let him pitch until August 17th of that year. My hope is that the bleeding stops by May 17 of this year. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/blackni01.shtml

This is a great question, because I want to see us compete this year, but not at the expense of future vitality. DO promote from within. Bring up Chargois when he’s healthy. DO move up our studs in AA to Rochester, ASAP. Three of the five top Relief Pitchers of the Month are in Chattanooga. http://twinsdaily.com/_/minnesota-twins-news/minnesota-twins-minor-leagues/twins-minor-league-relief-pitcher-of-the-month-april-2017-r5546 John Curtiss, Nick Burdi, and Mason Melotakis could help the Twins, if this rise to the top of the mediocre AL Central heap continues into August. DO NOT trade one iota of future hope for a Wild Card ride in 2017. This rebuild is a slow bake, not a microwave job. Let our boys learn about being in a pennant race. Maybe a two-man rotation can push Minnie into a postseason run, maybe not. -
Article: Polanco Providing Poise
Don't Feed the Greed Guy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree. It will be interesting to see how this plays out as we approach the All-Star break and beyond. Dozier is signed through 2018. I hope Dozier mashes, and the Polanco-Dozier middle infield helps keep the Twins competitive past the trade deadline. Vielma and Gordon continue to swap time at 2b and SS, move up to AAA and are September call-ups. Dozier is traded in the offseason for a #2 starter and a quality prospect. Polanco, Vielma, and Gordon shore up the middle for years to come? What if Vielma and Gordon become the Twins version of Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell until, oh, about 2035? http://bleacherreport.com/articles/237133-why-alan-trammel-and-lou-whitaker-deserve-to-be-in-the-hall-of-fame- 28 replies

Yes, Granite is still injured. That's why he is only an option in a few weeks, or more likely in June or July, if he gets healthy and puts up the same kind of numbers that he did in AA last year. He could be a quality centerfielder, and lead off. He may not have the same ceiling as Buxton, but we don't know that, do we? Palka is like having a Willingham or an Arcia in the outfield, a HUGE step down from Buxton, for sure. But if the offensive upgrade offsets the downgrade with a greater WAR, then the Twins should do it. AAA is for developing quality prospects who can contribute in the Major Leagues. If Buxton isn't ready to face MLB arms, then get this 23 yr-old prospect the work he needs OFF the Twins roster. I'm patient. I can wait for Buxton to click. I want him to succeed so that the Twins win more ballgames and can be competitive in 2017. But that's goal--to win games--and on a business level--to sell tickets. Buck can still help this team in the years to come. So, back to my question, if there is NO improvement, how much longer is the leash?

And what if he doesn't make the necessary adjustments? How long can this go on IF there is no improvement? That's my basic question.

28 k's in 57 at-bats. If that near 50% k-rate continues, and the batting average stays below .150, how long until he's sent down to AAA? Mid-May? June 1st? All-Star break? The Twins are only 1.5 games out of first place in the AL Central, and need MLB-caliber at-bats in order to stay in contention. I don't want to see a team that could play meaningful games in June or July throw away at-bats in April and May. Daniel Palka (.935 OPS in AAA) could make a difference now, or a healthy Zach Granite (CF, on the 7-day DL, and 2016 Minor League Player of the Year) could if he's clicking in a few weeks. How long can this go on?

I looked up this article after visiting with Brian at Spring Training a few weeks ago. My 11 yr old son was attracted to "Olson" on the back of Brian's jersey. He brought a ball with him to the minor league fields. Our boy asked Brian to sign, and I mentioned over his shoulder, "He's an Olson too." That brought out even more character in Brian. He asked our boy if he plays baseball too. What position? Favorite player? I don't know much about character from eavesdropping on a two-minute conversation with a ballplayer at the back end of a dugout. But what I saw was class. Brian signed the ball for my boy, and in small letters wrote John 3:16 below his signature. The ball went into my boy's backpack, and didn't come out the rest of the day. That's the only signature he wanted on his ball.

Gordon at SS. Vielma at 2b. It will be interesting how these two share the middle of the infield over the balance of 2017.

Any thoughts on Gonsalves moving up to AAA? After going 8-1 with a 1.82 ERA with Chattanooga, how much more does he have to prove?

I'd like to see what Granite can do in Rochester, first. He has no AAA cred, yet. Also, he can play every day there, and not sit on the bench. Per the article, he's still my #1 choice if Buxton should go down. BTW: Nice kid. Got a chance to visit with him briefly upstairs at the Meltdown.

Great event! I enjoyed visiting with Phil Miller--very approachable guy. Also Stephen Gonsalves and Zach Granite (upstairs with other prospects). We discussed having a Draft Party at the Twins Daily table at the Diamond Awards. The draft is set for Monday, June 12. What a great opportunity for draft nerds to gather at a local Twin Cites bar to hear the Twins first pick, and then enjoy some baseball chatter over beers as the clock moves toward picks #35 (competitive balance pick) and #37 (first pick of the 2nd round). Last year, teams were given four minutes between first-round picks, and one minute during the competitive balance phase (#31 through #36). That means two hours, at the most, between pick #1 and picks #35 & 37. The time of the 2017 draft hasn't been released, but last year the MLB Network began broadcasting at 6 p.m.ET, with the first pick on the clock at 7:01 p.m.ET. Mock Draft prizes for most correct picks, and least correct..? Could be fun! I'd drive down from Walker for sure! Only criticism of the event--minor criticism--was the lack of tables--eating space. I think if there was seating in front of the stage, some of the folks who ate early might have been willing to move closer to the stage, and give up table or bar space to those who were waiting for a place to eat. The bar might also see this as a way to increase their income.

We would like to join you folks at the Diamond Awards, if room is still available. My wife is a physical therapist who worked with last year's featured individual, Patrick Tyk who underwent the surgical procedure called deep brain stimulation to help treat his Parkinson’s symptoms. Nice when a date night combines our "Twin" passions for baseball and community service.

Article: Winter Meltdown - SOLD OUT
Don't Feed the Greed Guy replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wow! Tickets went fast... Bummer. -
"An article from Mike Berardino in the Pioneer Press earlier this week quoted a source as saying that a final decision would be coming soon "out of respect" for the veteran infielder." I, as a fan, would like this settled by Twins Fest, where our family has had great interactions with Dozier. Makes sense that fans, labor, and management want the halls of Target Center to be "friendly confines" by the end of January.

Our family watched the Tin Caps-Kernels tilt last night in Fort Wayne. We're on our way out to Boston and Fenway, and Pawtucket-AAA to see our Twins and Red Wings play. Parkview Field rivals the finest Spring Training parks with a top notch field and facilities. Consider dropping in if you ever take an East Coast road trip. As for the game, four errors and miscues made the score much closer than it should have been. Kevin Garcia-who was nice enough to toss my son a ball-tried reaching third on Rainis Siva's single with nobody out in the second inning. He was thrown out by fifteen feet. Nine other runners were stranded on base over the first four innings, adding to the frustration, and the simultaneous sense that our luck was bound to change. Sam Gibbons' return to the rotation was also not as bad as the box scores dictates. One or two pitches would have been the difference. Haunting walks, bone head errors, and pitches left over the plate could easily have been replaced with balls-in-play, double plays, and timely strikeouts. Eventually our fortunes changed. The bats stayed hot, and baserunners who couldn't get past third base during the early innings began to be waved home. One last suggestion: try "Shigs in Pit" BBQ. The best BBQ I've enjoyed since dining at Gates BBQ in Kansas City, remembered from the days when we used to head south for outdoor baseball, and to escape our Teflon-covered exile in the Homerdome.

Article: Where Are The Prospects?
Don't Feed the Greed Guy replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Post-trade deadline, Polanco should be at second and Sano at third, with Kepler in right. Plouffe and Dozier work only in a "win now" format so trade 'em. I still see 2018 as the breaking point toward winning ways. 2018 is also Joe Mauer's last season under his present contract. Park at 1b through 2020.- 71 replies
