    Lehigh Valley IronPigs @ Rochester
    Box Score

Anthony Vasquez, started for the IronPigs, pitched a complete game, 8.0 innings, giving up four hits, a run, and striking out eight, but he gave up a solo home run to Tommy Field in the fifth inning, the only run of the game. Buddy Boshers earned a hold with 1.2 innings of shaky relief, giving up a hit and three walks before being lifted with two outs in the ninth. Edward Mujica came in to save the day and struck out the only batter he faced.

The Red Wings managed just four hits on the night, one each from Wilfredo Tovra, Mitch Garver, John Ryan Murphy (designated hitter John Ryan Murphy!), and the aforementioned home run from Tommy Field.

If the season started 10 games ago, the Twins would have the second best record in the American League. Too bad the twins have been terrible for the better part of four months. To make things worse, the Twins sent struggling Byron Buxton to Rochester to make room for Trevor Plouffe who is activated from the Disabled List.

The pitching staff didn't fare much better, as starter Jason Wheeler gave up four earned runs over 6.0 innings. He gave up eight hits, walked four, struck out one and gave up a home run. Alex Wimmers had a terrible relief stint, managing just 0.2 innings, giving up five runs (three earned), via five hits. Sean Burnett finished the inning, striking out the only batter he faced. LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN
    Jacksonville Suns @ Chattanooga
    Box Score

More Omar Bencomo, more of the time! Bencomo gave the Suns fits over 7.0 innings. Bencomo gave up just two hits. He walked one and struck out five. Raul Fernandez and Ryan Eades each gave the Lookouts an inning of scoreless relief to complete a 3-hit shutout.

The Lookouts only tallied six hits of their own, but two of them were doubles, and two more of them went over the fence, so that was plenty. Ryan Walker led the way with a 2-3 night, with a double, a home run, two runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk. Nike Goodrum had a two-run dinger as part of his 1-4 night. Zach Granite had a nice night as well, 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

    Final: Suns 0, Lookouts 4

    MIRACLE MATTERS
Fort Myers @ Charlotte Stone Crabs
    Box Score

Fort Myers only gave up one hit, but they gave up TWO runs! To make matters worse, they only managed three hits of their own, scoring just one run, in a tough loss. Dereck Rodriguez was tagged with the loss in his Fort Myers debut, despite 7.0 innings of one hit ball. He gave up two runs, walked two, and struck out six. Cam Booser added a clean inning of relief, sending the Stone Crabs down 1-2-3.

Tough night with the sticks for the Miracle, who teamed up for seven strike outs, two walks, and those same three hits. The Miracle scored their lone run on a solo home run from Chris Paul (1-4).

Final: Miracle 1, Stone Crabs 2

    KERNELS KORNER
    Peoria Chiefs @ Cedar Rapids

The Chiefs put up three runs in the top of the first against Tyler Beardsley, and then had just one more hit the rest of the night. Beardsley pitched 5.0 innings, gave up three hits, three runs, walked four and struck out one. He was replaced by Williams Ramirez, who had a spectacular relief outing, going three full innings giving up just one hit. Max Cordy pitched the bottom of the ninth. He was a little rocky, walking two batters, but struck out two and kept the Chiefs off the board.

Leadoff man Christian Ibarra led the way for the Kernels, he was 2-4 with a solo home run. Luis Arraez and Casey Scoggins each added two hits of their own.

    Final: Chiefs 3, Kernels 2

In baseball, and in life, the only constant is change. The Terry Ryan era has come to an end and with Rob Antony in charge, it will be an interesting couple of weeks until the trade deadline. In the short term, the change should not have any impact on the Twins Minor League organizations or day to day business with the affiliates, but when a new General Manager arrives later this year or during the offseason, expect to see a slew of changes.

Transaction Report: Brandon Peterson promoted to Chattanooga Lookouts from Fort Myers Miracle, Brian Olson promoted to Fort Myers Miracle from Cedar Rapids Kernels, Brian Navarreto placed on the disabled list for the Fort Myers Miracle.

    RED WINGS REPORT
    Durham Bulls @ Rochester
    Box Score

The Red Wings fell behind 3-0 after an inning, but came back to tie the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a two-run single from Jorge Polanco. With one out and a man on first, the Wings had Daniel Palka up to bat and Adam Walker II on deck. They both struck out and play continued into the tenth inning, where manager Mike Quade was ejected and new pitcher Buddy Boshers gave up five runs, including a grand slam.

Byung Ho Park was 3-5 with a double, a solo home run, and a walk. Wilfredo Tovar also had a three-hit game, going 3-5 with a double. Jorge Polanco was 2-5 with a run scored, a solo home run, and the previously mentioned two-RBI single. Adam Walker was 2-5 with a solo home run and a walk.

Jason Wheeler gave up four runs (one earned) on just five hits. He walked one and struck out seven. The Red Wings bullpen then went to work as D.J. Baxendale, Ryan O'Rourke and Alex Wimmers combined for 4.0 innings of scoreless ball. The trio of relievers struck out eight and gave up just three hits. And then Buddy Boshers came in and gave up five runs (all unearned), and was tagged with the loss. In 10 innings the Rochester staff struck out 17 batters and walked just 5.

Final: Bulls 9, Red Wings 5

    LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN
    Mobile BayBears @ Chattanooga
    Box Score

The Lookouts didn't score until the bottom of the eighth inning, but they put 3 runs on the board which was enough to earn the win. Starter Stephen Gonsalves did not factor in the decision, but pitched a great game. He went 7.0 innings, gave up just a pair of hits, one run, walked two and he stuck out nine. Zack Jones earned the victory, pitching a scoreless eighth inning, and Trevor Hildenberger earned his 16th save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.

The Lookouts were shut out for the first seven innings, and record just a handful of hits before that 3-run eight. Mitch Garer was 2-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the team. Edgar Corcino was 2-3 with a double and an RBI is of his own. Ryan Walker had the remaining RBI as part of an 0-3 night with 2 strike outs.
    Final: BayBears 1, Lookouts 3

    MIRACLE MATTERS
Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Fort Myers
    Box Score

Down 5-2 after four innings of play, the Miracle made it as close as one run, but couldn't score late against the Flying Tigers' bullpen. Miracle Starter Miles Nordgren had a tough evening, giving up five runs (all earned) over 6.0 innings. He gave up eight hits, walked two, struck out three, and gave up a pair of home runs. Luke Westphal gave up an eighth inning run, and Todd Van Steensel finished the game with 1.2 innings of no-hit baseball, striking out a pair along the way.

Firstbasemen T.J. White had HALF of the Miracle hits on Thursday night, 3-5 with a double, a triple, two runs scored, and a pair of strike outs. Not much else going on for the Miracle, but Tanner Witt, and Trey Vavra each picked up an RBI, and Chris Paul hit a double.
Final: Flying Tigers 6, Miracle 4

    KERNELS KORNER
Cedar Rapids @ Fort Wayne TinCaps
    Box Score

In Fort Wayne, the Kernels were tied 2-2 after six innings, and needed an extra frame of baseball to pick up the victory. In the top of the 10th, Luis Arraez circled the bases with a triple down the right field line, advancing home on a throwing error. Williams Ramirez locked things down in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the lead, earning his fourth save of the season.

Miracle starter Cody Stashak gave the Kernels a quality start with 6.0 innings. He gave up 6 hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out two. Andrew Vasquez was phenomenal in relief, earning the victory thanks to 3.0 innings of one-hit baseball. Vasquez gave up just one hit and struck out 6, before turning things over to Ramirez in the 10th.

The Kernels struck out 13 times on the night and we just 1-7 with runners in scoring position, but a win is a win. Luis Arraez led the team with 3 hits, 3-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and a walk. Casey Scoggins, J.J. Fernandez, and Chris Ibarra also added two hits apiece.
    Final: Kernels 3, TinCaps 2

    E-TWINS E-NOTES
    Elizabethton @ Princeton Rays
    Box Score

In an absolute slug-fest at Hunnicutt Field in West Virginia, the Twins crawled their way back to a one-run deficit at 9-10 before giving up six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Despite scoring nine runs, the Twins had zero extra base hits. Mitchell Kranson led the team with four hits, 4-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Twins pitching struggled throughout, as you might expect. Starter Jose Martinez gave up six runs over 3.0 innings. Relievers Austin Tribby and Hector Lujan each pitched 2.0 innings, giving up four runs and six runs, respectively. Alex Robinson was the only pitcher, on either team, to leave the game unscathed, pitching a scoreless eighth inning.

    RED WINGS REPORT
    Rochester @ Lehigh Valley IronPigs
    Box Score

In his first at bat in Triple-A, Daniel Palka hit a home run, and for good measure he hit another one later in the game, helping power Rochester to victory. Here is a video of Palka's first home run of the evening.

    @https://twitter.com/MorrieSilver8/status/751249706794180608

Palka also added a double as part of his 3-5 evening that included three runs scored, a pair of RBIs and a couple strike outs. The Red Wings also benefitted from a big night out of Adam Walker, who was also 3-5. Walker had a pair of doubles, a run scored, a pair of RBIs and a strike out. There is a lot of power in the middle of that Rochester lineup with those two hitting fourth and fifth, respectively.

Pat Dean struggled on Thursday, giving up 12 hits and seven runs (all earned) over just 4.0 innings. He walked one, struck out three, and gave up three home runs. He was lifted for D.J. Baxendale who pitched two scoreless innings and earned the victory, as Baxendale and the rest of the Rochester bullpen shut down Lehigh Valley the rest of the way. Ryan O'Rourke pitched a scoreless inning and earned his fourth hold of the season. Closer J.T. Chargois came in for a six out save, striking out three and giving up just one hit, earning his sixth save.

Final: Red Wings 8, IronPigs 7

    LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN
    Birmingham Barons @ Chattanooga
    Box Score

Lookouts starter Aaron Slegers gave up a first inning run, but the Lookouts rallied, including six runs in the bottom of the fourth, carrying Slegers to his eighth victory of the year. Slegers final line was 6.0 innings, 7 hits, 2 earned runs, a walk, a strike out, and he gave up a solo home run. Mason Melotakis pitched a perfect seventh, striking out the side on 12 pitches. Rual Fernandez finished the final two innings, giving up a pair of runs on a hit, and two walks. He struck out three.

Chattanooga had contributions up and down the lineup as all nine players recorded at least one hit, and six players had multi-hit games. Zach Granite was 3-5 with a run scored, a double, and two RBIs as the leadoff hitter. D.J. Hicks had a big game, too, 2-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Travis Harrison and Niko Goodrum added home runs as well, both solo home runs.

    Final: Barons 4, Lookouts 10

    MIRACLE MATTERS
Bradenton Marauders @ Fort Myers (continued from June 26th)
    Box Score

With Bradenton back in Fort Myers, the two teams continued a rain-shortened June 26th game, picking up in the bottom of the fourth inning with one out and a 4-0 Miracle lead. In an interesting statistical note, Niko Goodrum hit a home run early in that game prior to the delay, meaning he had a home run in High-A and Double-A in games that ended on Thursday night. Using a total of 13 different hitters, the only Miracle with multiple hits was Joe Maloney, going 2-2, including a triple. The Miracle added one additional run in the seventh.

Miracle starter Randy Rosario did not return to his start, replaced instead by Luke Bard, who earned the win with 2.0 scoreless innings. Brandon Peterson added 2.0 scoreless innings of his own, before being replaced by Todd Van Steensel who pitched a scoreless ninth to finish off the June 26th game in a shutout.
    Final: Marauders 0, Miracle 5

Bradenton Marauders @ Fort Myers (Game 2)
    Box Score

Coincidentally, Randy Rosario was on the bump to start the second game of the evening, meaning he started both ends of this Miracle double-header. Rosario picked up his fifth win of the year to move to 5-5 with 6.1 innings of 3-run baseball. He gave up 7 hits, 3 earned runs, walked 3, and struck out two. He was lifted for John Curtis who shut down the Marauder threat, retiring both batters he faced to finish the 7-inning game.

The Miracle tallied 12 hits in this seven inning game, including a pair of hits from T.J. White, Nick Gordon, and Daniel Kihle (making his High-A debut). Kihle was 2-3 with a double, run scored, 2 RBIS and a strike out. LaMonte Wade also added an extra base hit (a double), plus an RBI and a walk.

    Final: Marauders 3, Miracle 8

    KERNELS KORNER
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers @ Cedar Rapids
    Box Score

In a good old fashioned pitchers' duel, the Kernels held on to a 1-0 lead to defeat the Timber Rattlers in front of 2,077 fans at Perfect Game Field. Kernels starter Cody Stashak was perfect through five innings before a broken bat single broke things up in the top of the sixth, the only hit Stashak would give up over eight innings of stellar work. Stashak walked three and struck out eight. Tom Hackimer pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the year for the Kernels.

The Kernels managed to scatter seven hits against Timber Rattlers starter Jordan Yamamoto over seven innings, but managed to push just that single run across the plate, an RBI groundout from Rainis Silva in the bottom of the second inning, scoring Jaylin Davis. Davis was the only hitter, on either team, with more than one hit, 2-3 with a double and a run scored.
Final: Timber Rattlers 0, Kernels 1

    E-TWINS E-NOTES
Elizabethton @ Bristol Pirates (Game 1)
    Box Score

With a double-header slated for the evening, a long night was made longer due to a 1-hour rain delay, pushing first pitch back to 7pm, and pushing the start of the second game back to nearly 10pm.

In the first game, Elizabethton managed 4 runs on just four hits, despite striking out 10 times in seven innings. Lewin Diaz was 1-3, including a home run, and a pair of runs scored. First round draft pick Alex Kirilloff was the only player to record a multi-hit game, 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Kirilloff is hitting .414 through his first 8 games of the season with an OPS over a thousand.

Elizabethton starter Domenick Carlini gave up 10 hits and seven runs (all earned) over 4.0 innings. He walked one, struck out two, and gave up a home run. He was lifted for Hecto Lujan who pitched a pair of scoreless innings, striking out three, and giving up just one hit.

    Final: E-Twins 4, Pirates 7

Elizabethton @ Bristol Pirates (Game 2)
    Box Score

The E-Twins struggled with the bats again in the second game of the evening, with just five hits. Lewin Diaz was 1-3 with a double, and Shane Carrier was 1-3 with a double, as well. Kirilloff was 1-3 with the Twins' lone RBI.

Tyler Wells didn't make it out of the fourth inning, giving the Twins 3.2 innings of two-run baseball before being lifted for Griffin Jax (phenomenal name, good luck to ya kid), who gave up a pair of runs as well. Wells struck out six without walking anyone. Jax added a strike out of his own, and also did not give any free passes. Neither pitched particularly poorly, but without much run support, they needed to be better.

    Final: E-Twins 1, Pirates 4
    GCL TWINS TALK
    GCL Twins @ GCL Rays
    Box Score

The Twins just barley managed more hits (4) than errors (3) en route to losing handily to the Rays. Ben Rotvedt was 1-4 with a double, the lone extra base hit for the Rays. The Twins managed just three at bats with runners in scoring position all evening. Starter Bo Hellquist picked up the loss (0-1), spreading five runs (just two earned) over 4.0 innings, walking one and striking out three. Moises Gomez had a great outing in relief, pitching three scoreless innings, walking no one and he struck out five. Zach Strecker pitched the eighth, giving up two runs on four hits to end the night for the Twins.

The DSL Twins split a double-header on Thursday morning. The Twins more or less threw two bullpen games, with Carlos Suniaga the biggest bright-spot of the day, pitching 4.0 innings of relief. Suniaga gave up three hits, and a walk, but what really jumps off the page is his nine (NINE!) strike outs. The other six pitchers the Twins used on the evening managed just 7 more Ks.

Over two games, the Twins had just two players record multi-hit games, one in each. Ruben Santana was 2-4 with a hit and an RBI in the first game, and Yestin Encarnacion was 3-4 with a run scored in the second game.

    RED WINGS REPORT
    Indianapolis Indians @ Rochester
    Box Score

Despite having Jose Berrios on the bump and a 2-4 day from Byron Buxton that included a triple and a home run, the Wings could not keep up with the Indianapolis Indians. Berrios gave up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and then another in the third, and one more in the fourth. Berrios struck out just one over 6.0 innings. He gave up seven hits, and walked two. He was lifted for Marcus Walden who pitched 1.2 innings, giving up a run in the top of the eighth, and was lifted for Ryan O'Rourke, who finished the final 1.1 innings of the game.

Hitting in the top two spots in the order, Byron Buxton and Eddie Rosario (2-4, double) were pretty much the entire Red Wings offense, each picking up one of the Rochester RBIs on the evening. The Wings were ultimately 0-5 with runners in scoring position, unable to capitalize on the production at the top of the order. Adam Walker, who had hit six home runs in his previous six games, was 0-3 with two strike outs.

Final: Indians 5, Red Wings 2

    LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN
    Tennessee Smokies @ Chattanooga
    Box Score

The Lookouts had thirteen hits and four walks, but could not put enough runs on the board to stay ahead of their in-state rivals, the Tennessee Smokies. Chattanooga was out to an early 1-0 after a Zach Granite home run to leadoff the game, and they were ahead 2-0 after the first thanks to a D.J. Hicks RBI single. Daniel Palk, Mitch Garver and Leonardo Reginatto were all 3-5, together accounting for four Lookouts RBIs. Former top draft pick (and a guy I keep hoping puts together a strong season) Levi Michael was 0-2 with a walk and a strike out and is hitting just .198/.289/.246 on the year.

On the bump, Nick Greenwood had a tough outing, giving up 12 hits and five earned runs. HE struck out two, walked one, and gave up a home run. Four of the runs given up by Greenwood came in big third inning, in which the Smokies sent eight batters up to the plate, and tallied three extra base hits including a two-run home run, a double, and a two-run triple. Greenwood was replaced by Luke Bard to start the eighth. Bard pitched two innings, gave up a pair of runs, walked one, struck out three, and gave up a home run. Mike Strong finished the game for the Lookouts with a 1-2-3 ninth.

    Final: Smokies 7, Lookouts 6

    MIRACLE MATTERS
Palm Beach Cardinals @ Fort Myers
    Box Score

The Miracle received a very strong pitching performance from starter Felix Jorge. Jorge earned his third victory of the season, pitching 7.0 innings of scoreless baseball. Jorge walked two and struck out five. His ERA this year is down to 1.73, the fourth lowest ERA in the league among qualified starters. Yorman Landa pitched 1.1 innings, giving up a pair of runs in the top of the ninth before being lifted for Brandon Peterson who eared his third save of the year, who came into the game and induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.

The Miracle received RBIs from each of the last five hitters in the order, including 2-4 nights from both Max Murphy and Tanner Witt. Centerfielder Edgar Corcino also had a nice night, he was 2-3 with a double, a walk and a pair of runs scored. Former first round pick Nick Gordon was 1-3 with a double and a pair of walks and is hitting .307/.361/.444.
    Final: Cardinals 2, Miracle 6

    KERNELS KORNER
    Cedar Rapids @ Burlington Bees
    Box Score

The Kernels just pounded the Burlington Bees on Thursday inning, scoring a run in the first, four runs each in the second and third innings, and two more in the fourth to take an 11-0 lead. They'd tack on one more run in the top of the ninth, for good measure. The twelve runs scored were more than enough for starter Fernando Romero who pitched 5.0 innings of two hit baseball. Romero gave up one run, a pair of walks, and struck out five. Sam Gibbons pitched three innings of relief, giving up just two hits and one run, walking one and he struck out a pair. C.J. Irby finished the game, holding the Bees scoreless bottom of the ninth with a 12-2 lead.

Six Kernels players had multi-hit games and with the exception of Brad Hartong (1-6 with a double and 2 strike outs) all the batters reached base safely multiple times, lead by LaMonte Wade (1-3 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBI, and 3 walks). Daniel Kihle had a very nice game as well, going 3-5 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI. The Kernels had more extra-base hits (6) than the Bees had hits (5).

    Final: Kernels 12, Bees 2

Last year the Twins selected Tyler Jay, a college closer from the University of Illinois, with their first selection in the draft. Jay spent the rest of 2015 in the bullpen, but has been stretched out and is starting games for the Fort Myers Miracle. You will find more about his start below, but I wanted to lead with this gem from Seth Stohs,
Sounds like Jay is having no problems maintaining his velocity late into his start.

Transaction Report: The Chattanooga Lookouts activated shortstop Engelb Vielma from the disabled list and to make room for him on the roster catcher Carlos Paulino was promoted to the Rochester Red Wings.

    RED WINGS REPORT
    Pawtucket Paw Sox @ Rochester
    Box Score

Jose Berrios had his best start of the season and helped the Red Wings snap a five-game losing streak. Berrios pitched 7.0 innings, gave up just two hits, walked only one and struck out seven. Berrios' ERA on the year is now just 1.06. Pitching like this, it cannot be much longer before Twins fans see Berrios in the Big Leagues. Berrios was finished after the seventh and Brandon Kintzler pitched 1.1 innings of shutout ball before handing things over to Taylor Rogers to finish off the game and preserve the shutout. Neither Kintzler or Rogers struck out a batter, or walked one.

The Red Wings only needed one run with the way the pitching staff shut down the Paw Sox, but the Wings put up five runs (three earned), for good measure. The Red Wings used a fairly balanced attack as every hitter had either or a hit or a walk, and seven of the nine hitters had either a run scored or an RBI. Kennys Vargas , who was 1-4 on the night with an RBI and a strike out, hit a double. Vargas has a 16/4 stirkeout-to-walk ratio right now, and is hitting just .184 with four extra base hits all year, all doubles. John Hicks was 2-3 and scored a run on a solo home run. And Heiker Meneses was 1-4 with four strike outs but also recorded a triple.

Final: Paw Sox 0, Red Wings 5

    LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN
    Chattanooga @ Mississippi Braves
    Box Score

Not to be totally out done by Jose Berrios and Tyler Jay, Ryan Eades had a nice evening on Thursday night as well. Eades pitched five innings of one run ball, struck out five, and gave up just four hits and one run. Despite giving up just one run, Eades was tagged with the loss as the Lookouts bats were unable to make sense of Braves starter Brandon Barker. After Eades left the game down 1-0, Reliever Brett Lee gave up three runs in the sixth to put Chattanooga in a 4-0 hole with just nine outs left to play with. Brandon Peterson pitched the final two innings for the Lookouts, striking out one and facing the minimum in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Two Lookouts hitters had multi-hit nights, Daniel Palka who was 2-3 with a walk, and Levi Michael, 2-3 with run scored. The freshly activated Engelb Vielma was 0-4 hitting in the ninth spot. None of the Lookouts seven hits were for extra bases and they managed just three walks against eleven strikeouts.

    Final: Lookouts 2, Braves 4

    MIRACLE MATTERS
    Jupiter Hammerheads @ Fort Myers
    Box Score

Despite throwing gas deep into his start against the Hammerheads, the Miracle's Tyler Jay's first inning sunk Fort Myers on Thursday night, losing the series in the process. Jay was tagged for three runs in the top of the first after a walk to the leadoff hitter and three straight singles to begin the game. Tyler Jay finished the game with 5.0 innings pitched, giving up five hits, three runs, three walks and he struck out six. Raul Fernandez pitched 2.0 innings of scoreless relief before turning things over to Luke Bard for the eighth striking out two of the three hitters he faced. Todd Van Steensel pitched the ninth and gave up a leadoff walk and eventually balked in a run.

The Miracle actually outhit the Hammerheads 9-7, but were just 1-9 with runners in scoring position, leaving nine men on base. Chris Paul was 3-5 with two doubles and an RBI to lead the Miracle attack. Trey Vavra, 2-4 with a run scored was the only other Miracle hitter with multiple hits.

    Final: Hammerheads 4, Miracle 2

Taylor Rogers, an eleventh round pick in 2012 out of the University of Kentucky, made his MLB debut this afternoon against the Chicago White Sox. Rogers pitched 0.2 innings and gave up just one hit. Rogers spent all of 2015 with the Red Wings as a starter, compiling an 11-12 record with a 3.98 ERA. Finished off the 2015 season with 25 innings in the Arizona Fall League, going 2-2 with a 2.88 ERA but struggled with command walking 11 hitters. Rogers made just one appearance (out of the bullpen) for the Red Wings in 2016, pitching two scoreless innings.

Transaction Report: As Seth wrote earlier today, the Twins signed MLB veteran outfielder David Murphy to a Minor League deal, and he'll be reporting to Rochester on Friday. Rochester also activated Stephen Wickens from the DL. Chattanooga added infielder TJ White from Fort Myers to replace shortstop Engelb Vielma, who went to the DL with a hamstring strain. The TJ White promotion resulted in a chain of moves with Chris Paul being promoted to Fort Myers from Cedar Rapids, and Manuel Guzman joining Cedar Rapids from extended Spring Training.

    RED WINGS REPORT
    Rochester @ Buffalo Bisons
    Box Score

Rochester was in Buffalo on Thursday afternoon facing the Buffalo Bisons and former Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Diamond. Scott Diamond gave the Bisons a workman like 7.0 innings of 6 hit, 1 run ball to go along with six strikeouts, really keeping the Red Wings' bats at bay. Only Buck Britton (on of my favorite names in the Twins farm system) managed more than one hit. He had two, one was the Red Wings' only extra base hit of the day, a run scoring double in the top of the 6th inning to give Rochester a short-lived lead. Britton was a one man machine for the Red Wings. Big bopper, Kennys Vargas, was 0-3 with a walk and no strike outs.

Also a one man show - Pat Dean. Pat Dean pitched 8.0 innings of 5 hit, 2 run ball (1 earned) and was charged with the loss to fall to 0-2 despite a shiny 2.08 ERA. Dean induced 14 ground ball outs, but did not record a single strike out. Dean was cruising through five before a Dalton Pompey double followed by an Andy Burns RBI single knotted the game at 1-1. An inning later, Jesus Montero (yes, that Jesus Montero) reached on a throwing error by third basement Heiker Meneses and was eventually doubled in by Junior Lake, giving the Bisons the lead, and ultimately the ball game.

Final: Red Wings 1, Bisons 2

Alex Meyer will make his first start of the 2016 season on Friday. Meyer previously pitched 4.0 scoreless innings of relief on April 10th against Scranton.

    LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN
    Jackson Generals @ Chattanooga
    Box Score
After his first game back at third base since 2014 last night, Travis Harrison was back in the outfield on Thursday night. He finished the evening just 1-5 and is hitting just .214 on the year. Dan Palka came into Thursday's game with a team leading four-game hitting streak and extended his streak to five games with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Mitch Garver was the big offensive force for the Lookouts, their only multi-hit player of the evening, 2-3 with two walks, an RBI and a strike out. The real story of this game isn't just these individual performances, but the way the team rallied, down six runs. The Lookouts got a big crooked number in the sixth with five runs, and four more in the seventh to come from behind and take the game 11-8. With just one hitter with multiple hits, this was a big team effort.

David Hurlbut, the only Lookouts starter to record a decision in every game he started last year, left Thursday's game without a decision. Hurlbut pitched just 4.0 innings, surrendering five runs (just two earned), on six hits, two walks, a home run and three strike outs. In addition to 17 starts for Chattanooga in 2015, Hurlbut also threw briefly for the Miracle after starting the season on the DL, and made a spot start for the Rochester Red Wings. Hurlbut throws a 90+ mph fastball and will mix in a cutter, change and slider. Hurlbut gave way to Mike Strong in the top of the fifth with Chattanooga down 5-2. Strong gave up a double and then walked the next two batters he faced before being lifted for Corey Williams. All three of Strong's runners would eventually come around to score before the inning was over. With the Lookouts down down 8-2, the pitching staff shut down the Generals for the next four innings. Corey Williams would pitch two scoreles innings, Jake Reed earned the W with two scoreless innings of his own, and J.T. Chargois picked up his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.
    Final: Generals 8, Lookouts 11

    MIRACLE MATTERS
Brevard County Manatees @ Fort Myers
    Box Score

Tanner English led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to left center field. The Miracle would add on two more runs in the bottom of the first to go out in front 3-0 and held the lead the rest of the way. As a team, Fort Myers racked up 13 hits and 5 walks to counter seven strike outs. Tanner English was 2-4 with that home run, a single, and a walk. Logan Wade had a multi-hit night as well, 2-5 with an RBI. Chad Christensen and Austin Diemer also had a pair of hits. Diemer also added a stolen base.

Defensively, the Miracle had a poor night, kicking things off with a fielding error by third basement Chris Paul on the first hitter of the night. The Miracle would commit three more errors in the first six innings. Kohl Stewart, starting his second game of the year, was unfazed by the poor defense behind him, going 6.0 innings with 6 strikeouts and just one walk. Stewart allowed just one hit and moved his record to 1-0 while lowering his ERA to 1.50. Raul Fernandez replaced Stewart and covered the seventh and eighth innings without allowing an earned run, but not without some trouble, walking three batters, allowing a pair of hits and being charged with an unearned run. Brian Gilbert allowed another run in the ninth, walking one, giving up one hit, and he stuck out one.

    Final: Manatees 2, Miracle 7

    KERNELS KORNER
Clinton Lumber Kings @ Cedar Rapids
    Box Score

The Lumber Kings put a run on the board in the top of the first inning to put the Kernels down 1-0, but they rallied in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own. Kernels starting pitcher Andro Cutura would allow one more run in the top of the third, but otherwise pitched a very solid 6.0 innings. Cutura gave up just two hits, walked two, struck out six and was charged with two runs (one earned). Cutura is now 2-0 for the Kernels with a 2.45 ERA. Cutura was replaced by C. K. Iby who pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Nick Anderson finished the game for Cedar Rapids to seal the victory.

The Kernels leadoff man Luis Arraez put on a show with a home run and a pair of singles as part of a 3-4 night with two runs scored and two RBIs. Rafael Valera and LaMonte Wade, hitting second and third, were each 2-4, giving the Kernels seven hits from the top of their order. Sean Miller, the number eight hitter, also picked up a pair of hits, 2-3 with two runs scored. All told the Kernels had 11 hits, 4 for extra bases.
Final: Lumber Kings 3, Kernels 7

The Scottsdale Scorpions, who host Twins prospects this season in the Arizona Fall League, had a strong week, going 4-1 before Saturday's Fall Stars Game, which featured Twins Adam Brett Walker and Mitch Garver for the East Fall Stars. The East Fall Stars fell 8-3 against the West despite an early 2-0 lead.

Read on to check out how each prospect did in week four of the 2015 Arizona Fall League season!

    Adam Brett Walker - 3 games, 4/11, 3R, 2B, 3B, HR, 6 RBI, BB, 5K, SB (Fall Stars Game - 0/2, 2K)

Walker struggled on Monday night, 0-3 with a pair of strike outs, his worst performance of the week. On Wednesday, after a day off, Walker made up for his dreadful Monday performance by going 2-5 with a pair of RBIs on a triple and a home run, as part of an 8-2 Scottsdale drubbing of Peoria. He also collected another pair of strikeouts. Walker led the Scorpions to victory on Friday night with four RBI on a 2-3 night that included a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth.

    Stuart Turner - 2 games, 1/5, 2R, RBI, 3 BB, 2K, 1 CS

Turner was 0-3 on Monday night, with a pair of strike outs, but did work a walk and eventually came around to score as part of a five run fourth for the Scorpions. On Thursday evening, Turner was 1-2 with a pair of walks, a run scored, and an RBI.

    Mitch Garver - 3 games, 2/7, 1R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 5 BB, 2K, 2SB (Fall Stars Game - 0/1, K)

Garver was 1-2 with a double and two walks on Tuesday evening, but it wasn't enough as the Saguaros held the Scorpions scoreless. Garver backed up his Tuesday performances with another strong game on Wednesday, 1-2 with THREE walks, a double, and an RBI. Garver also picked up a stolen base. Garver came back down to earth on Friday evening, with a non-eventful 0-3.

    Nick Burdi - 2 games, 2.0 IP, 1H, 3K, 0BB, 0R

In his first game of the week, Burdi entered in the bottom of the eighth looking to preserve a shutout of the Scorpions. Burdi failed to strike anyone out, but a couple of grounders and a fly ball into fall territory made quick work for Burdi, who needed just 14 pitches, eight strikes, to get out of the inning, despite a ground ball single. Back on the mound on Thursday night, Burdi had another strong performance, striking out the side in the eighth on just twelve pitches. Burdi has yet to give up a run in the Fall League.

    Trevor Hildenberger - 1 game, 1.0 IP, 2H, 1R (earned), 0K, 0BB, HR

On Tuesday, Hildenberger struggled in an inning of relief. He entered the game in the fourth with the Scorpions already down 3-0, and gave up a solo home run to left field before retiring the side.

    Jake Reed - 2 games, 2.0 IP, 1 SV, 2K, 0H, 0R, 0BB

Jake Reed needed just six pitches to deal with the Saguaros in the top of the eighth, sending the 2-3-4 hitters down in order. On Thursday night, Jake Reed picked up his second save of the Fall League with a 1-2-3 ninth that included two strike outs and 10 of his 11 pitches went for strikes. Like Burdi, Reed has yet to allow a run this fall.

    Taylor Rogers - 1 game, W, 4.0 IP, 1H, 1 BB, 2K

Rogers pitched four scoreless innings as the starter for the Scorpions this past Monday, sending down the opponents in order in three of his four innings. Rogers got into a little trouble in the third inning, with runners on first and second with just one out, but a strike out and a groundball to short, kept runs off the board. The Scottsdale bullpen preserved the lead and Rogers picked up his second win of the fall.

Please feel free to ask questions and discuss the performances during the week!
  9. Eric R Pleiss
After yet another Minnesota Twins loss, the Twins made a couple of roster moves on Thursday night. Tyler Duffey was optioned back to Rochester, and Eric Fryer was designated for assignment, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster. In their place the Twins recalled A.J. Achter and Chris Herrmann. The addition of Achter means the Twins have a nine-man bullpen, and only four starters. They'll next need a fifth starter on August 13th, so expect to see another move in the middle of next week.

    RED WINGS REPORT
Rochester Red Wings @ Gwinnett Braves
    Box Score

The Red Wings scored six of their seven runs in the fifth inning to erase a 4-0 deficit and take the lead for good. The Wings used a fairly balanced attack to get to the Braves, with five different hitters picking up multiple hits. The Red Wings had twelve hits on the night, to go along with six walks and just five strike outs. Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-4 with a walk, a double, a run scored and three RBI. Oswaldo Arcia struggled big-time, he was 0-5 with three strike outs. Danny Ortiz was 2-5 with a solo home run.

Red Wings starter Jason Wheeler was pulled after giving up four runs on seven hits in four innings. He didn't walk anyone and only struck out one of the 18 batters he faced. He was replaced by Alex Meyer who pitched three innings of relief and was credited with a win thanks to the Red Wings' six-run fifth. Meyer gave up three hits, a run, walked two and struck out one. Mark Hamburger and Aaron Thompson shared the eighth inning, and Michael Tonkin earned a save in the ninth, his ninth of the year.

Final: Red Wings 7, Braves 5
    LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN
Chattanooga Lookouts @ Jackson Generals (Game 1)
    Box Score

The Lookouts blasted four runs in the first inning but could not hold the lead as the red hot Generals rallied to come from behind. Kennys Vargas was 2-3 with two runs scored, four RBI, a walk, a two-run home run, and no strike outs. In the top of the seventh (remember that MiLB double-headers are scheduled for just seven innings), Max Kepler and manager Doug Mientkiewicz were both ejected for arguing after Kepler thought he was hit by a pitch and home plate umpire Clint Vondrak thought it was a foul ball.

Greg Peavey started for the Lookouts, but after being staked to that early four-run lead, he gave up six runs in the second inning, and eight before he was lifted with one out in the fifth. Peavey's line for 4.1 innings was seven hits, eight runs (four earned) five walks, and two strike outs. He was replaced by Jake Reed who had an adventuresome two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits and a walk, allowing a pair of runs to score. Reed picked up one of his outs as the Lookouts caught Jackson's Zach Shank attempting to steal home. Matt Summers came on the pitch the seventh and gave up a two-run home run before retiring the side.
    Final: Lookouts 6, Generals 10

Chattanooga Lookouts @ Jackson Generals (Game 2)
    Box Score

The Lookouts managed just four hits in the second game of the evening, all singles. Jairo Rodriguez was 2-3 hitting in the eighth spot in the lineup, picking up half the team's hits. The 1-5 hitters for the Lookouts were a combined 2-14 with four walks and six strike outs.

David Hurlbut pitched all six innings for Chattanooga. He gave up a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, but that was all he allowed the rest of the way. On the night he gave up six hits, four earned runs, walked three and struck out three.

    Final: Lookouts 0, Generals 4

    Box Score

The Miracle raced out to an early 4-1 lead and were cruising into the eighth inning up 5-1 before St. Lucie put up a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and again in the top of the ninth. Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Logan Wade doubled to start the inning and was moved to third on a Zach Granite sacrifice bunt. Ryan Walker hit a liner to right field for a single to bring Wade around to score the winning run. Ryan Walker had himself a great ball-game, in addition to driving in the winning run he had two other hits, scored two runs and drew a walk. Mitch Garver also had a nice night, 2-4 with a walk and a pair of RBI.

Kohl Stewart had a nice outing for the Miracle. He pitched seven innings, gave up six hits, one run, walked two and struck out six, bouncing back from his las outing in which he gave up seven runs in 5.1 innings. In his last 10 starts, Stewart is 3-3 with a 3.13 ERA over 60.1 innings, but he has just 36 strike outs and 24 walks. In five of those starts he's had as many or more walks than strike outs. After Stewart exited Thursday's game, Corey Williams and Todd Van Steensel tried to give the game away, each surrendering a pair of earned runs before Zach Jones came on with two outs in the ninth inning to shut the door on the St. Lucie attack.

    KERNELS KORNER
Dayton Drags @ Cedar Rapids Kernels
    Box Score

In a back and forth game in Cedar Rapids, the Kernels walked off the Dayton Dragons with a two-run ninth. Down 4-3, the Kernels put Rafael Valera on second after he singled and advanced on a fielding error by the center fielder. Valera moved to third on a ground ball and scored courtesy of a Zack Larson fielder's choice ground ball after the shortstop couldn't make an accurate throw to nab Valera at the plate. Larson, now standing on first base, stole second before batter Brett Doe walked. Another ground ball advanced both runners into scoring position, and with two outs and the game tied, Nick Gordon hits a pinch-hit line drive to left field to score Larson from third and win the game.

On the evening, the Kernels picked up twelve hits, four for extra bases, five walks, and struck out eight times. T.J. White was 2-4 with a pair of doubles, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Brian Navarreto and Tanner English also had multiple hits, both 2-4 in the contest.

Zach Tillery gave up nine hits over six innings, but just three runs, one walk and six strike outs, good enough to earn him a quality start, but no decision. Michael Theofanopoulos pitched three strong innings of relief to earn the win for the Kernals thanks to those late inning heroics. He gave up four hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out three.

    Final: Dragons 4, Kernels 5

    RED WINGS REPORT
Lehigh Valley IronPigs vs. Rochester Red Wings
    Box Score

Thanks to nine shutout innings from the Red Wings pitching staff, Rochester dealt Lehigh Valley's Aaron Nola his first AAA loss of the season. The Red Wings rode another strong Tyler Duffey (4-4) start to victory. Duffey went six innings giving up just two hits. He walked five but struck out six. His ERA now sits at a sparkly 2.24. Duffey was replaced by Alex Meyer who pitched a perfect seventh, including a pair a strike outs. Michael Tonkin and Aaron Thompson pitched an inning a piece to finish things out.

The Red Wings scored six runs despite striking out ten times and only picking up eight hits. Oswaldo Arcia hit his ninth AAA homer, a two run shot in the first inning, and Danny Ortiz hit his ninth as well, a solo shot in the fourth. Ortiz's homer was part of a 3-4 night that also include a double and a pair of RBIs. Arcia's home run was part of his 1-4 night that also included three strike outs.

    MIRACLE MATTERS
Fort Myers Miracle vs. Brevard County Manatees
    Box Score

When the leadoff hitter is 2-3 with a walk, you hope the top of your order can produce a couple of runs, but the Miracle could only push Zach Granite across one time for their lone run of the evening. No other Miracle hitter had multiple hits, though Brett Doe was 1-2 with a pair of walks.

Ryan Eades, who had put up a number of nice starts in the last two months, was tagged for four runs in six and a third innings. He did, however, strike out seven, and he didn't walk anyone. He was lifted for Brian Gilbert who pitched the final inning and a third, giving up one hit, one walk, and he struck out a pair.

    Final: Miracle 1, Manatees 4
    KERNELS KORNER
Burlington Bees vs. Cedar Rapids Kernels
    Box Score

Down 5-2 headed to the bottom of the seventh, the Kernels scored a run in bottom of the inning and then another in the ninth but came up just short, losing 5-4 in front of the home crowd in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Kernels offense put together just seven hits, and like the Red Wings and the Lookouts, they also stuck out ten times. Brian Navarreto led the charge for the Kernels, their only hitter was multiple hits, 2-4 with an RBI single.

Ethan Mildren was lifted after just four innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and a single strike out. Jared Wilson pitched three innings but gave up two more runs. Chris Mazza and Cameron Booser each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, but the game was too far out of hand for the Kernels to come back.

    E-TWINS E-NOTES
    Elizabethton Twins vs. Danville Braves
    Box Score

The E-Twins only struck out eight times, so I suppose that's pretty good news, but they still couldn't muster any offense, scoring just a single run. LaMonte Wade was 2-5 with an RBI and A.J. Murray was 2-4 with a double.

The Twins used four pitchers to get through eight innings even after they got six innings from their starter Miles Nordgren. Nordgren was tagged for one unearned run on five hits, no walks, and five strike outs. He was replaced in the seventh my Alex Robinson who gave up an earned run of his own, which saddled him with the loss. Josh Guyer pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up the Twins' only earned run of the evening, and Onesimo Hernandez finished the eighth, putting down the only batter he faced.

    LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN
    Chattanooga @ Montgomery Biscuits
    Box Score

Despite building a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half, the Lookouts were blown out by the Montgomery Biscuits 12-7. The Biscuits scored six runs in the bottom of the second, three more in the third, and one each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. David Hurlbut, the Lookouts starter, lasted just two and a third innings, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits, a walk, and a strike out. Madison Boer pitched an inning and two thirds, gave up one run, and was replaced by Nick Burdi, who gave up a run in each inning he pitched, including a solo home run. Tim Shibuya finisedh the game with two innings of one hit ball. On the evening the Lookouts gave up fourteen hits, four walks, and a single dinger.

The Lookouts tried to come back from down seven runs with a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth, but despite multi hit nights from Levi Michael, Adam Brett Walker, and Heiker Meneses, they could not get the job done. Miguel Sano and Adam Brett Walker both had home runs for the Lookouts. Stuart Turner added a triple, and Levi Michael and Max Kepler each had a double. Chattanooga had plenty of additional scoring chances, but left seven men on base and were 3-10 with men in scoring position. MIRACLE MATTERS
Fort Myers @ Charlotte Stone Crabs
    Box Score

Miracle starter Aaron Slegers went seven innings, gave up just five hits and a single unearned run. He struck out eight and walked no one. Despite that strong performance, the Miracle hitters didn't put any runs on the board until after Slegers was out of the game, so he was left with no decision. Corey Williams vultured a win with a scoreless eight inning when the Miracle scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. D.J. Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth to earn just his second save of the year.

Miracle hitters were stymied for most of the game, but put together two runs (one earned) in the top of the ninth inning thanks to an Engelb Vielma walk, an Alex Swim triple, and a passed ball. The Miracle collected just three hits on the evening, one a piece from Chad Christensen, Alex Swim, and Engelb Vielma.

Quad Cities River Bandits @ Cedar Rapids
    Box Score

Cedar Rapids rallied late, then gave up the lead in the top of the ninth, only to walk-off the River Bandits in the bottom of the frame to move to 42-29 on the year. Felix Jorge was going to be on the hook for the loss, leaving after six innings of two run (one earned) baseball. He struck out five, but walked three and was down 2-0 when he left the contest. Brandon Bixler pitched a pair of scoreless innings, and Luke Bard pitched the top of the ninth. Bard gave up a run, on three hits and a walk, and was charged with a blown save (his first of the season), but then claimed rights to a win when the Kernels rallied in their last at-bats.

The Kernels pushed across the winning run in the ninth thanks to a leadoff single from Jorge Fernandez, who was quickly lifted for pinch runner Tanner English. English moved to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Brian Navarreto, and then took third on a Pat Kelly groundout. With two outs and a man on third, Edgar Corcino singled to right field and English had an easy trot in for the winning run. Nick Gordon was 1-4 with a run scored. Zach Larson was 1-4 with a pair of RBIs. Corcino hit leadoff for the Kernels, was 3-5 with that RBI and one strike out. If you're unfamiliar with Corcino, don't be alarmed, he's a 23 year-old MiLB journeyman who has played in the Minors and Independent baseball since 2009. Corcino is playing in affiliated ball for the first time in three years, after playing as high as AAA in 2012 for the Detroit Tigers' Toledo Mud Hens.

With the Minor League season all but over, this is likely the last time I will be writing the Minor League Report for the 2014 season. I won't disappear completely, you can still find me and the rest of the Talk to Contact crew talking beer, baseball and the news over at www.TalkToContact.com on our weekly Minnesota Twins podcast. Thank you for hanging out with me and talking Minor LEague ball this year at Twins Daily, it has been a blast.

The Twins played host to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the first of a four game series at Target Field. The Twins lost (what's new?), but Cedar Rapids and Fort Myers are playing in the post-season and you're here for the Minor League Report, so let's make it happen.

    Miracle Matters
    Daytona 1, Fort Myers 5
    Box

The Miracle took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five Florida State League Championship Series on Thursday night with a victory over the Daytona Cubs. The Miracle jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. Dalton Hicks and Stuart Turner scored those two runs on an RBI single from Tyler Grimes with two outs in the second. Miracle Starter Matt Tomshaw was cruising into the sixth inning before running into a little bit of trouble. The Cubs' leadoff hitter in the sixth reached on a ground ball deflected off of Tomshaw, and then advanced to second when Tyler Grimes committed a throwing error trying to make a play on the deflected ball. The next hitter dropped a bunt single to put runners on the corner with no outs. Tomshaw then struck out a hitter before a ground rule double plated a run. The Miracle were saved a run as the base runners were only allowed to advance two bases. Tomshaw then walked the next batter and induced an inning-ending double play a batter later.

With the score now 2-1, Adam Brett Walker, who finished first in the FSL in homers in the regular season, led off the bottom of the sixth and deposited the third pitch of the inning over Green Monster in left field. The Miracle would add another run in the sixth when Travis Harrison doubled home Jason Kanzler. The Miracle closed out the scoring in the bottom of the seventh via an RBI double from Adam Brett Walker, scoring Stuart Turner. With runners on second and third with no outs and a chance to really break the game open, the Miracle failed to put another ball in play as Tyler Grimes and Jason Kanzler struck out swinging before Aderlin Megia was hit by a pitch. Then with bases loaded and two outs, Niko Goodrum went down on strikes as well.

With the score then 5-1, D.J. Johnson and Brandon Peterson finished things up for the Miracle, holding the Cubs scoreless for the final two frames.

On the night, Adam Brett Walker was 3-4 with a run scored, that double and home run, and two RBIs. The 22-year-old is hitting .444 this post season, and as I mentioned above, led the FSL in homers this year, with 25 long balls. A year ago in Cedar Rapids Walker lit up the Midwest League with 27 round-trippers. Walker should start 2015 in Double-A and really test his meddle against some of the better pitchers in the Minor Leagues.

Travis Harrison was 2-4 on the day with two doubles, an RBI and a walk. The Miracle hitters totaled eleven hits, four walks and nine strike outs against the Cubs.

Matt Tomshaw's final line was six innings pitched, six hits, one earned run, two walks and he struck out four. D.J. Johnson pitched two scoreless innings to earn his second hold of the post season, and Brandon Peterson finished things off in the eighth.

The Miracle are back at "home" at Jet Blue Park for game-two on Friday evening at 6:05pm.

After dropping the first game of the series in Cedar Rapids, the Kernels snuck pas the Burlington Bees 2-1 to force a third game in this three-game series. The Kernels and the Bees played three quiet innings until Cedar Rapids broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. With runners on the corner and no outs, Alex Swim singled home a run to give the Kernels a 1-0 lead with two runners on and no outs and a chance to extend their lead. The next batter, J.D. Williams popped one up to the first basement, and then Engelb Vielma and Michael Quesada both struck out swinging to end the Kernel's threat.

The Bees tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single, ending the evening for Kernel's starter Mat Batts. Brian Gilbert replaced Batts and struck out the next batter swinging to end the sixth.

In the top of the eighth Logan Wade pushed the Kernels ahead by a run with a solo home run, which turned out to be the winning run for the Kernels. In the bottom of the eighth, things heated up after Jake Mauer was ejected arguing a safe call at first base on a bunt attempt that gave Burlington runners on first and second with no outs. Mauer's ejection perked up his team as Gilbert proceeded to pick off the runner at second base, and then quickly induced an inning ending double play to move play to the ninth.

Down by one, the Bees put runners on the corners with no outs against Jake Reed, who replaced Gilbert to start the inning. Reed struck out the next batter and then induced an inning ending double play of his own on a grounder to Engelb Vielma at shortstop to preserve the Kernels' victory.

The Kernels recorded just seven hits on the night, to go along with a single walk while striking out ten times. Chad Christensen were both 2-4, and the hero of the night, Logan Wade, was 1-4 with that solo blast. On the mound, Mat Batts pitched very well, scattering three hits over 5.2 innings, giving up only one run. Brian Gilbert pitched 2.1 scoreless innings before turning things over to Jake Reed for an adventurous save.

The Kernels and the Bees will finish things off on Friday at 6:30pm at Community Field in Burlington, winner take all.

The Minnesota Twins resumed their winning ways and came up with a 4-1 victory against one of the hottest pitchers in baseball. The Twins ended a 20-inning scoreless drought when Kennys Vargas homered to give the Twins a 1-0 lead in the forth off of Corey Kluber. The Twins picked up a couple more runs against Kluber and thanks to a magnificent performance from Phil Hughes the Twins cruised to victory.

Jose Berrios picked up his fourth loss of the year in AA (2-4, 3.89 ERA in seven starts). Berrios lasted 5.2 innings, gave up eight hits, four runs (three earned), he struck out four and walked one. He was relieved by Mason Melotakis who was hit hard, giving up three runs (two earned) in just an inning. Edgar Ibarra did not fare much better, finishing the game for the Rock Cats with 1.1 innings of three run (two earned) baseball.

With a 10-1 loss, there are not a lot of positives. The Rock Cats managed just seven hits as a team, and even their hottest hitter, Levi Michael, was held hitless on an 0-3 night. Mike Gonzales had a pair of hits, 2-3 with a strike out, and Tony Thomas and Brandon Waring were both 1-4 with a double. Waring's double drove home the only run of the evening for NEw Britain. Waring, 28, has spent part of the last seven years bouncing around the Minor Leagues. He was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the seventh round of the 2007 draft. Waring eventually moved over to Baltimore and split time between AA and AAA between 2009 and 2013 before joining the Twins organization this winter. Waring is having one of his worst professional seasons, hitting just .201/.302/.395, all in AA. The primary hole in Waring's game is strike outs, he has 146 of them in 378 at bats, 38.6%.

The Miracle played a bullpen game, using six different pitchers, none more than the three innings from the scheduled starter, Madison Boer. Boer did not give up a run, scattered two hits, struck out one, and walked no one. He was replaced by Todd Van Steensel to start the fourth. Van Steensel went two hitless innings, giving up a lone walk and he struck out four. Van Steensel now has a 1.89 ERA over 14 innings at AA. Van Steensel is having a spectacular season, before the promotion to High-A he made 23 appearances for Cedar Rapids with a 1.30 ERA spread over 34.2 innings with 45 strike outs and nine walks. But I digress, after Van Steensel, Tyler Jones entered and coughed up the lead. He gave up two earned runs in the sixth on three his, a walk and a strike out. D.J. Johnson pitched the seventh and the eighth, giving up just two hits while he struck out five and picked up the win. Nick Burdi picked up his first save in High-A, he gave up a hit but struck out the other three batters he faced, and no walks!

The Miracle rallied to score four runs in the top of the ninth to win, capped by a Max Kepler grand slam to right field. That was Kepler's only hit of the evening, but he made it count. The Miracle had only four hits last night, with Travis Harrison, Tyler Grimes and Bryan Haar also contributing.

Lewis Thorpe has his ERA moving in the wrong direction after a tough outing in Burlington, Iowa. Thorpe lasted just 4.2 innings giving up five runs. He struck out seven and walked just one, but he gave up six hits and was hurt by a couple of errors leading to three unearned runs. Brandon Bixler came on in relief and pitched 1.2 innings of 1 hit baseball before Dallas Gallant came on and had 1.2 hitless innings, including three strike outs. Jake Reed picked up his third save with a scoreless ninth inning. Gallant and Reed are pitching great since they were promoted to Cedar Rapids, both sporting ERAs under 1.

The Kernels used a four run seventh inning to take the lead, three runs coming on a bases loaded triple from Jonatan Hinojosa. Hinojosa would score on the next batter on a passed ball. That run proved to be the difference maker. In addition to his three-run triple, Hinojosa had an RBI single in the fifth and finished the night 2-5 and two strike outs. Hinojosa was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2010 and has played just 10 games above Rookie ball in his career, all coming in the last week and a half and he's off to a red hot start hitting .364/.378/.545. Hinojosa has been used all over the field, but has settled in to spend most of his time at 3B in 2014. Mitch Garver was 2-3 with a double and a walk, and Ryan Walker also had two hits from the ninth spot in the order 2-4, with an RBI and two runs scored.

Flamethrower Brandon Poulson struck out three batters in his inning of work, but also gave up a solo home run. Kuo Hua Lo pitched a scoreless ninth to wrap things up.

Nick Gordon was 2-5 with two runs scored, but the biggest contributor last night for the Twins was Tyler Kuresa whow as 2-4 with a double, a run scored, and three RBIs. If you've never heard of Tyler Kuresa, don't be alarmed. He was a 16th round draftee in the most recent MLB draft. Interestingly enough, Kuresa was originally drafted in the 10th round by the Twins coming out of high school, but elected to head to the University of California in Santa Barbara. He was then drafted in the 14th round as a junior, but returned to school before being taken by the Twins this spring, four years and six rounds later than his original selection. Kuresa is a 1B/DH type, and as a college senior, is not having any trouble in Rookie Ball, posting an .807 OPS through his first 37 games.

Michael Theofanopoulos (which is just plain fun to say) started for the Twins and pitched three innings. He struck out three, walked one, gave up five hits and two runs. He was replaced by Reyson Zoquiel who pitched just a third of an inning while walking three and giving up a hit. Callan Pearce went 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, which is quite a task for any reliever, and then Eduardo Del Rosario pitched the ninth. Del rosario gave up three hits, two runs, a walk and he struck a batter out. Outside of Pearce, a pretty rough day on the bump for the GCL Twins.

The Twins did not do much with the bats either, picking up six hits, six walks, and nine strike outs. Joel Polanco was the only hitter with multiple hits, he was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Twins enjoyed an off day on Thursday, and begin a four-game series with the Royals on Friday evening. The Royals are red hot right now, having just taken over first place in the American League Central, and looking to do damage against a struggling Twins squad. While things might not go well at Target Field this weekend, there will be plenty of solid performances in the Minor Leagues. Let's take a look at what happened on Thursday.

    Red Wings Report

Consistency matters to the Twins front office, and Alex Meyer hasn't strung a bunch of solid starts together for a while now. Last night he had his second poor outing in a row, lasting just 3.2 innings, surrendering a home run, three walks, and five hits. With all of that damage he limited the Bull to just two runs, but threw 84 pitches, jut 45 for strikes. The lone positive from Meyer's outing is that he stuck out seven of the nineteen batters that he faced. A.J. Achter stranded both of Meyer's runners when he took over int he fourth, and then pitched two more innings without giving up a run. The floodgates opened up when Deolis Guerra gave up three runs in 1.2 innings, and then Aaron Thompson gave up four runs in 1.1.

The Red Wings hitters did not have a strong night either, picking up only four hits, one walk and striking out 11 times. One hit for Wilkin Ramirez extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Aaron Hicks picked up two more hits, and is playing very well in the week since he was promoted to AAA, continuing to earn a September call up.

A day after the Byron Buxton/Mike Kvasnicka collision, the focus returned to the action on the field. Pat Dean started for the Rock Cats and went 5.2 innings. Dean gave up seven runs, five earned, in route to his ninth loss of the season. Dean's AA ERA is over five and he's given up five or more runs in four of his last five starts. Adrian Salcedo finished up the sixth and the newly acquired Jason Adam pitched the final three innings. Adam struck out one, walked one, and was tagged for four earned runs on six his.

The Rock Cats had an opportunity to break this game open in the first inning with the bases loaded and one out, but managed to score only one run, likely costing themselves a chance to win. Levi Michael followed up his strong AA debut with another big day at the plate. He was 2-4 with two runs scored, a walk, and his first RBI in a Rock Cats uniform. Eddie Rosario was 2-5 with two RBIS, and two strike outs. He's hitting just .245/.302/.386, while being used primarily as an outfielder. Tony Thomas had a nice evening as well, 2-4 with a double and a run scored. The Rock Cats had plenty of opportunities to win this game late, but combined for 13 strike outs and stranded eight runners.

The Miracle won via the walk-off hit by pitch, as Travis Harrison took one for the team to push home the winning run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. Steven Gruver started for the Miracle and gave up ten hits through five innings. He struck out two, walked one, gave up a home run and was tagged for five runs, three earned. B.J. Hermsen came on and walked three batters in the sixth, giving up a run on no hits. Tyler Jones pitched a great seventh, striking out the side. Alex Muren struggled in the eighth, surrendering two runs on a long ball to Gavin Cecchini. D.J. Johnson pitched the ninth and vultured a victory. Johnson has now made seven appearances for the Miracle and has yet to give up an earned run. Opposing hitters are hitting just .192 against him, and he owns a 1.00 WHIP.

The Miracle hitters took advantage of seven free passes from the Mets' pitching staff, and along with fourteen hits, managed to squeak out a victory. Max Kepler (perhaps angry that all four Talk to Contact hosts left him unprotected in their pretend MLB expansion draft) had three hits, including a triple, a walk, an RBI and three runs scored. Kepler is hitting over .350 in his last ten games, and has raised his batting average fourteen points in that time. Kepler is currently on the 40-man roster and hopefully he's taking the step forward the Twins have been hoping for from their German Wunderkind. Aderlin Mejia was 2-4 with a double and two walks, and Adam Brett Walker had a double of his own as part of a 2-5 night with an RBI a strike out and a run scored. Travis Harrison, despite driving home the winning run on a hit-by-pitch, as I mentioned above, was 0-3 but picked up a pair of free passes and two RBIs.

The Kernels were firing on all cylinders on Thursday night. Mat Batts picked up his first win as a member of the Kernels with six innings of five-hit baseball. He struck out seven and walked one. He's sporting a nifty 2.12 ERA for the Kernels over three starts and 17 innings. Batts was drafted in the 17th round of the most recent MLB draft, out of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and is now pitching at his third level of the season. He was successful in three appearances in the Gulf Coast League, not giving up any earned runs there, he was 2-0 in four starts in Elizabethton with a 2.05 ERA over 15 innings, and now has that nice 2.12 ERA in Low-A with Cedar Rapids. If you're curious about the uncommon spelling of Mat, his full name is Harison Mathis Batts. After Batts left, Brian Gilbert pitched the next two innings, giving up a run, and Brandon Bixler mopped up in the ninth, giving up a run as well but preserving the victory.

The Kernels picked up fourteen hits and struck out just five hits en route to a 10 run game. Ever starter except for Logan Wade (0-4 with a walk and two runs scored) and Michael Quesada (0-5) had a hit, and six players had multi-hit games. Mitch Garver led the way for the Kernels on a 3-5 night with a double and three RBI. Chad Christensen had a double of his own, he went 2-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. The win on Thursday gave the Kernels a three-game sweep against the Snappers and moved them to 62-60. The Kernels have a four game lead for a playoff spot with just eighteen games remaining.

Michael Caderoth earned his fourth victory of the year for the E-Town Twins with five innings of two run baseball. He struck out five, walked two and gave up only a single earned run. Flamethrower Brandon Poulson made his second appearance since being signed as a Minor League Free agent, and struggled. Poulson walked the first batter he faced, Edwin Medina, who then promptly stole second and third. The next batter singled home the run. A passed ball then moved the runner over to second. Poulson then induced a fly out and a strike out. Then the runner on second base stole third. Poulson then walked the next batter and was lifted for Cameron Booser. Not a great day for Poulson, but I'm sure his head is still spinning as he transitions into professional baseball. Booser pitched 2.1 scoreless, and Dereck Rodriguez picked his his fifth save of the year with a scoreless ninth (though he did give up a pair of hits).

Jeremias Pineda led the way for the Elizabethton Twins, leading off and going 4-5 with a run and a double. Trey Vavra also had a nice night, he was 2-3 with a pair of doubles, a pair of RBIs, and a pair of runs scored.

Zack Jones pitched 1.2 scoreless, and then Trevor Hildenberger came on and coughed up the lead thanks to three unearned runs. In fact, of the five runs the GCL Twins gave up on Thursday night, only one was earned.

Tyree Davis was the only Twins player to record multiple hits, he was 2-2 with two doubles after entering the game for Frank Encarnacion. The GCL Twins had just seven hits, but three were for extra bases, all doubles.

Deolis Guerra finished the game and stuck out two in the ninth. The Red Wings held the Indians to just 3-30 hitting with two walks and ten strike outs.

The Red Wings pulled out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and cruised to victory. James Beresford was a big catalyst for the Red Wings, he finished the night 3-5 with a double and two runs scored. Daniel Ortiz was 2-3 with two runs scored, a home run, three RBI and a walk. Josmil Pinto was 1-2 with a walk, a double, and an RBI.

The Rock Cats actually out hit the Akron RubberDucks 6-4, but the Rock Cats did not receive any support from the bottom of the lineup as the 7-8-9 hitters went 0-9. Jorge Polanco was 2-4 with a strike out, the only Rock Cats player with multiple hits. Brandon Waring was 1-3 with the Cats' only extra base hit of the night, a double.

Tyler Jones pitched a scoreless eighth, and D.J. Johnson did the same in the ninth.

Levi Michael continues to play well, he was 2-4 with a run scored, a walk, and two RBI leading off for the Miracle. Byron Buxton was 1-5 (infield single) with a run scored and two strike outs. He's hitting just .236 for the Miracle. Adam Brett Walker II hit his Florida State League leading 23rd home run of the year, a solo shot in the eighth. Jared Wilson pitched the seventh and eighth without giving up a hit or a walk and he recorded a strike out. Jake Reed pitched two scoreless innings as well, to take the Kernels through the tenth. Reed gave up just one hit and struck out four. Dallas Gallant pitched a scoreless eleventh and picked up the win when the Kernels scored in the bottom of the inning.

Mitch Garver and Engelb Vielma both had 3-4 nights and they each hit a double. Engelb Vielma led off the 10th with a double, but could not come around to score. Gordon added a triple and three RBIs to his three hits. English had a double and two RBIs, and Fernandez had a triple, and three RBIs of his own.

The pitching staff held their own as well, giving up just five hits and two walks while they stuck out 13 Daville Braves hitters. John Curtiss started, went five innings, struck out eight and left turned the game over to the bullpen. Kuo Hua Lo pitched two hitless innings, he struck out three and walked none. Tommy Milone's career with the Minnesota Twins organization started in earnest on Tuesday night. The first two batters he faced hit singles, then he walked the third hitter. Bases loaded with no outs in his first appearance, not exactly the start he was hoping for. The next batter hit into a run-scoring double play, and then Milone induced another ground ball to end the inning. That would be the only run he gave up all night, he'd scatter four more hits and a walk over the next six innings and left the game down 1-0 after seven. Aaron Thompson pitched a scoreless eighth, but the Red Wings could not muster a run in the top of the ninth and Milone was tagged with a loss, despite pitching well in his debut.

The Red Wings hitters were completely flummoxed by Louisville's Dylan Axelrod, who pitched a complete game two hitter. Eric Farris picked up the first hit of the night, but was thrown out attempting to steal two batters later. James Beresford had the other Wings hit, a double. Josh Burris gave up one run in three innings, but because of yet another low scoring output in the Twins farm system, was tagged with a loss. Jhon Silva pitched two innings, struck out one and gave up an earned run on two hits. Zach Tillery pitched the final two innings of this seven inning game, giving up just two hits.

Manuel Guzman led off for the GCL Twins and produced half of their hits with a 2-4 night. Ariel Montesino and Rainis Silva each had one hit. The GCL Twins had no extra base hits, no walks, and nine strike outs. Ouch.

    GCL Twins 1, GCL Orioles 2 - Game 2
    Box

The GCL pitchers again pitched well in the second game, but again a lack of offense wasted their efforts. Michael Theofanopoulos pitched three innings, walked two, struck out one, and gave up three hits, including a solo home run. Alexis Tapia pitched two scoreless innings. Zack Jones pitched 0.2 scoreless before Miles Nordgren took over and pitched 2.1 scoreless to bring the game to the ninth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, with the game tied, Leonel Zazueta was victimized by a couple of errors. With one out the runner on first (Daniel Franco) took off for second base, and then advances to third on a throwing error b Gabriel Ojeda. Zazueta then struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning but a passed ball by Gabriel Ojeda allowed the winning run to score.

The GCL Twins had just three hits. One each from Amurys Minier, Nelson Molina and Manuel Guzman. Minier's hit was a solo home run, giving the Twins their only run of the game. In addition to going just 3-30 as a team, the GCL Twins also struck out eight times and walked only twice.

    DSL Twins Dialed In
DSL Twins 3, DSL Reds 14
    Box

Down in the Dominican, the DSL Twins were throttled b the DSL Reds 14-3. Jadison Jiminez started and earned the loss, giving up five runs (three earned) over five innings. Johan Quezada gave up three unearned runs in the sixth, and Erick Balbuena gave up five runs, four earned in just a third of an inning to start the seventh. Argenis Silva finished the game for the Twins, pitching 1.2 innings of one run ball. Ouches all around for the pitching staff.

The DSL Twins had twelve hits and four walks, but could not keep pace with the DSL Reds and their fourteen runs. Emmanuel Morel was 2-5 with a run scored, and Edgar Herrera was 2-3 with a walk, a triple, and two runs scored. No other player had multiple hits, but every starter had at least one, and only a pinch hitter (Jorge Parra) and a pinch runner (Jorge Andrade) failed to record a hit.

Kurt Suzuki is out producing the expectations of even the most optimistic Twins fan. He’s 30 years old and coming in to 2014 had a career line of .253/.309/.375, and even that is rosy considering what he’s done the past two seasons, .234/.282/.332 (for reference, Talk to Contact favorite, Drew “Boat Anchor” Butera, is hitting .231/.300/.385 in 2014). So the Twins bought low on a guy and brought him in with the hopes that he could help out Josmil Pinto, and because Suzuki is seen as a good “clubhouse guy.”
http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/suzuki.jpegMinnesota Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki (8) hits a two-run single against the Chicago White Sox in the third inning of an opening day baseball game at U.S Cellular Field in Chicago on March 31, 2014. (Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports)
Through his first 34 games of the year, Suzuki is hitting .332/.388/.430. He has an OBP north of .380 against both left and right handed pitchers. The Twins like what he’s doing with the bat so much they have stuck him in the lineup four times as the starting designated hitter.

Maybe just a hot start, right? He’s actually been better in May than he was in March and April. He started hot, and now he is getting hotter. Over his entire career, Suzuki has played better in the first month of the year than any other month, exactly what you might expect from a catcher that the Oakland Athletics ran out as their everyday catcher at least 117 times for five straight years (he caught his fewest games since his rookie season last year, 93).
Kurt Suzuki is doing all of this on a one-year, $2.75 million dollar contract. the Twins bought low and now they are in a great position to turn Suzuki into some surplus value via trade. Or, because he is only 30 years old, the Twins might consider signing him to a modest contract extension, just as they did with Ryan Doumit.*
*Ryan Doumit hit .275/.320/.461 in 2012 in his first year (age 31 season) with the Twins. The Twins extended him for two additional years with an extra $7 million dollars in late June 2012, making his total deal with the Twins three years/$10 million. With Doumit, the Twins were basically getting output from Doumit in line with his career numbers, so there was a little less risk, but in two of the three seasons prior to coming to Minnesota, Doumit either hit poorly or was injured (or both), so they were able to sign (what looks like now) such a team friendly deal. The Twins ultimately flipped Doumit to Atlanta** following a poor 2013 season which saw Doumit struggle at the plate and with concussion issues. He’s hitting .200/.217/.222 for the Braves.

**The Twins received LHP Sean Gilmartin in return for Doumit, a former first round draft pick (2011), who is currently performing well at AA New Britain (3-2, 3.63 ERA 39.2 IP, 12 BB, 37K) and if the Twins raid the AAA roster for pitching prospects Trevor May and Alex Meyer this summer, Gilmartin should be one of the logical selections to move up to AAA, where he pitched for parts of 2012 and 2013 in the Braves Org.

I would guess that the Twins do not expect Kurt Suzuki to continue avoiding outs in almost 40% of his plate appearances, but ZiPS projects the 30 year old catcher to produce as a MLB regular the rest of the way. Combined with with he’s already done in 2014, he’ll end up with a nice 2014 line. If Suzuki keeps up his current pace into the All-Star break, or even just keeps his line to something like .300/.350/.400, which would represent some fairly significant regression over the next month plus, there will be a handful of teams calling Terry Ryan/Rob Antony looking to acquire the veteran catcher for a post season run. Because the Twins have Josmil Pinto (even with his raw defensive skills), and because they are not in a win-now situation, the Twins could feel relatively comfortable flipping Suzuki.
In a trade scenario, the Twins would probably hope to fetch an intriguing Minor League player, as well as some MLB outfield depth, maybe a fourth outfielder capabale of playing center field and aleviating some of the Twins’ current outfield issues (especially if Sam Fuldexperiences setbacks returning from the concussion disabled list). Of course, what the Twins ultimately receive for Suzuki will depend on who their trading partner is, and where the Twins think they can add the most value.
If the Twins look to extend Suzuki, I think that something similar to the Ryan Doumit deal is realistic, but with a slightly higher annual value. I would not be surprised if he received two additional years for $10 million dollars, bringing his total package in Minnesota to three years and just under $13 million. He’s younger than Doumit, and he is a much more complete player, providing value on both sides of the ball.
If I am the Twins, I would attempt to extend Suzuki. The extension would not keep the Twins from trading Suzuki in a year or two, and if Josmil Pinto cannot live up to the hype from his 2013 call up when he hit .342/.398/.566, then the Twins have some hope of a bridge to the arrival of their next young catcher (who might be 2013 third-rounder Stuart Turner). If the Twins can make the extension team friendly then there is not a lot of risk in a deal like that, but if Suzuki and his agent (MVP Sports Group) are looking for a larger deal coming off of a big 2014, then the Twins should feel comfortable walking away.
    What would you do?

If you can still remember the early part of the season, Chris Colabello was a monster. He was hitting .346/.386/.577 through the first 20 games of the year. He had nine multi-hit games, and went hitless just four times. He was the darling of the American League for a while due to some timely hitting and a bunch of RBIs. But his line since April 23 tells me the league has started to adjust.
Since April 23, Colabello has been hitting an anemic .125/.188/.188. Over those 17 games he has just two extra base hits, five walks, and twenty five strike outs. He hasn't had a single two-hit game over that span, and he has more games (nine) without a hit, than he does games with a hit (eight).

So what is ailing Colabello? Let's start by taking a look at his spray charts. This is a good place to look for symptoms of Colabello's issue. We will not be sure what is going on, but we might be pointed in the right direction. We'll use the April 23 date to split up his season.

    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NQfoieke-Sw/U3Uabhm1ykI/AAAAAAAAFgI/kRsvLOi_zLw/s1600/colabello+pre.gif

What we see in the early season spray chart is that Colabello was hitting the ball all over the field. He did a nice job of hitting some fly balls the other way, but still had plenty of power to center field and his pull side. We also see line drives spread out pretty evenly across the diamond.

    http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CEiO2-rQNUI/U3Uabqyaf1I/AAAAAAAAFgE/KP9BI05rEb4/s1600/colabello+post.gif

After April 23, Colabello's chart looks completely different. We see a higher percentage of his balls in play barely making it out of the batter's box, and lots of infield grounders. There are only a handfull of line drives, and no fly balls hit to his pull side. He's either poking the ball the other way, or rolling over the ball and grounding out to the shortstop and third basemen.
What does this tell us, other than that Colabello has been struggling? Well, the lack of balls being hit to his pull side is discouraging. Colabello needs to be able to drive the ball to his pull side to be really effective. A couple of things could be going on with pitchers, they could be pitching him away more frequently. Last year there was a lot of talk about how far away from home plate Colabello stands, begging the opposing pitcher to attack the outside corner where Colabello would have a harder time getting to fastballs. The other thing that could be happening is that Colabello is struggling to catch up to MLB caliber fastballs, and after a hot first month, the opponents started to pick up on this, and are challenging him more with the fastball, throwing less breaking balls at him.
Let's take a look at the data and see what pitchers are doing to Colabello. We'll start with the pitch location data, to see if pitchers are pounding him on the outside corner.

    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yLBLpP2DCcI/U3UckcSz2iI/AAAAAAAAFgY/IxskCzFJWcs/s1600/pitches+pre.gif

What we see at the beginning of the year is a whole lot of pitches down in the zone, and while there is some evidence that pitchers prefer to pitch him outside, he was still seeing a lot of pitches over the plate and inside. After his mostly disappointing 2013 season, it was not surprising to see pitchers unafraid to throw the ball over the plate to Colabello, and to see what he did with it.

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--xgUdI420jM/U3UckXG2QqI/AAAAAAAAFgc/M7RYfBS2PFA/s1600/pitches+post+23.gif

After April 23, you see a lot more pitches down and away from Colabello, the part of the zone he has the most trouble covering because of his stance away from the plate. All of a sudden there are almost no more pitches down and in, a significant change from the early part of the season. We also see, surprisingly, that Colabello saw 24 pitches down the heart of the plate, belt high, a typically dangerous place for a baseball to be. But other than down and away, that is where Colabello is seeing the 2nd most pitches!
We know that pitchers are in fact pitching Colabello more to the outside, but they are also throwing him pitches right into the heart of the plate, so there has to be more to it. Maybe pitch types will tell us a little more.

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nKt7kDdVs4s/U3UhYc9zu-I/AAAAAAAAFgo/-vakUnCSPL4/s1600/pitch+type+by+time.gif

What we see in this graph is the first two months of the season, Colabello is seeing a lot more fastballs, almost 10% more, and a lot less off speed stuff. This, combined with a spray chart filled hit balls in play to his push side, leads me to believe that Colabello is having a hard time catching up to fastballs. Pitchers are comfortable throwing him fastballs because even when he recognizes the pitch, he has trouble hitting it with authority. Pitchers are throwing less off-speed pitches because those are the types of pitches that Colabello can handle. He's also seeing a lot more breaking balls than he was early in the year. When he's cheating a little bit to catch up to the fastball, he is more susceptible to the breaking ball, especially late break that Colabello would be unable to adjust to.
This is not good news. While there are some minor adjustments Colabello could make, bat speed is pretty tough to improve. He either has it, or he doesn't. Standing a little closer to the plate could give Colabello better coverage down and away, and he can certainly help himself by laying off some of those outside pitches, but there might not be much Colabello can do to look more like the hitter he was through the first 20 games of the 2014 season.

The Twins ended their home stand on a positive note, Phil Hughes picked up the win with a quality start and the Twins picked up the series win over the Orioles.

Let's see what happened in the Minor Leagues

    Red Wings Report
    Louisville 6, Rochester 12
    BOX

The Red Wings extended their winning streak to three games and now sit four games over .500, tied for their best mark of the season. With the Win the Red Wings won the four-game series against Louisville, the fourth consecutive year they've done so.

Alex Meyer had a rough outing, so maybe the book is out on his new changeup. He went just four and two thirds innings, giving up four runs, five hits, three walks and five strike outs. Meyer also gave up a home run in the fourth inning to Louisville's Mike Constanzo, ending Meyer's scorelss innings streak at 15 2/3. Edgar Ibarra picked up the win for the Red Wings, pitching two and a third innings (two his, one run, two walks, and a strike out), and Matt Guerrier finished out the final two innings, serving up a home run along with three hits, and a strike out.

Sunday was a big offensive day for the Red Wings, setting or matching season highs for runs scored in a game, hits in a game, runs scored in an inning, hits in an inning, extra-base hits, and total bases. Every Red Wings player picked up at least one hit, and six players picked up at least two. Chris Parmelee led the way with a three for five night, scoring three runs, knocking in five RBIs and hitting two home runs and a double. He's now hitting .333 on the year with a .395 OBP and .600 slugging. Eduado Nunez, despite not playing in eleven of the past twelve Rochester games, was also three for five. He is now hitting .313.

    Rock Cats Report
New Hampshire 2, Rock Cats 5
    BOX

The Rock Cats have now won three straight and earned their first series sweep of 2014. Virgil Vasquez, making his third start (and fifth appearance) of the year picked up the victory with seven and a third innings of four hit baseball. He only struck out one hitter, but he lowers his ERA to 1.57. Adrian Salcedo, who came into the night with three consecutive strong outings, finished out the final inning and two thirds, giving up just two hits and a walk, while striking out four batters. His ERA came down a little bit, but it is still at 8.4 for the year, due mostly to an April 12 outing in which he allowed six earned runs in just a third of an inning.

Despite scoring five runs, the Rock Cats had just seven hits on the night. Four of those runs came in the first inning. Corey Wimberly (1-4) led off the first with his only hit of the night, a triple. Nate Hanson ended the day, 2-4 with a run scored and a first inning RBI, driving in Wimberly. Daniel Ortiz had the Rock Cats' only other extra base hit on the night, a first inning double off the left field wall that scored Hanson.

    Miracle Report
    Bradenton 4, Fort Myers 2
    BOX

The Minnesota Twins organization was dealt their only loss of the day in Fort Myers. The Miracle had just five hits against Bradenton, and just two against starter Jason Creasy who struck out six Miracle hitters in 5.2 innings. Jason Wheeler pitched 5.2 innings as well, but he served up seven hits, three runs (two earned) a walk, and five strike outs. He now sports a 2.78 ERA.

With just five hits and two runs (both unearned), there is not a lot to say about the Miracle hitting from Sunday. Five batters, Levi Michael, Byron Buxton (making his return to game action), Travis Harrison, Aderlin Mejia, and Adam Brett Walker II, were hitless, and no one recorded more than one hit, or any extra base hits. If not for three Bradenton errors the Miracle may not have scored at all.

    Kernels Repor
    Peoria 0, Cedar Rapids 2
    BOX

The Kernels won the series in exciting fashion on Sunday night with a 2-0 shut out of the Peoria Chiefs. The Kernels scored early, tallying a run in the second and another in the third and held on for the win. Ryan Eades is now 3-3 after picking up the win, his ERA is down to 2.87 and he looks every bit the polished college pitcher the Twins thought they were drafting last year in the second round. Eades went five innings, struck out five, walked two, and surrendered no runs on three hits. Yorman Landa pitched three innings and gave up just a hit to go along with four Ks of his own. Hudson Boyd picked up the save with a perfect inning in the ninth.

J.D. Williams, playing in just his second game of the year, was the hero of the day at the top of the Kernels lineup, reaching base three times with a 2-3 day and a walk. Ivory Thomas was 0-1 but he picked up three walks, a stolen base and scored a run.
