  1. Astudillo has plenty of fans on the board. It's just that the detractors have been more vocal. The way the team has been going, with too many stars failing to step up, I welcome seeing Willians in the lineup. He's like Star Trek's Scotty, giving her all she's got.
  2. This I like. Not to jinx the young man, but I think he's going to adjust quickly. With no Kirilloff, Arraez, and now Buxton to watch, there has to be some reason to tune in. Cruz and Astudillo (yep, you read that right) can't do it by themselves.
  3. Love how the lineup is really starting to come together. Just need Kepler to find his stroke. Sano would be icing on the cake, but maybe too much to ask. Maybe it won't matter as much anyway. I'd hate to move Kirilloff off first base. He looks comfortable there.
  4. That is very funny. The word-play, not the injury. I was also going to make an age-related comment, but I had no idea terry was that old. I guess "1947" just must be some randomly chosen number ;-) Terry, I hope you've made as complete a recovery as possible. As someone who runs, even the idea of knee trouble sounds awful.
  5. Josh staking his claim to Cooperstown: A whole season batting 1.000, with an OPS of 3.000. Top that, Mike Trout.
  6. Donaldson to IL, retroactive to Friday, with Rooker up. Do-Hyoung Park: https://www.mlb.com/twins/news/josh-donaldson-placed-on-injured-list
  7. Josh is pregnant? And here I was thinking it was his hamstring.
  8. Desperate times, desperate measures. Don't replace a big bat with a Punch and Judy hitter. Alex K just may have to do his growing up in the big leagues.
  9. It's a conspiracy. MLB.com wants us to believe he was a major league ballplayer in 2016, but he was actually a pizza delivery guy operating out of a basement in Buckhead. Forgive the levity. I've learned more about Astudillo in the past two days than I know about my own pup. Really, I just want the guy to get some hits, spell a few guys in the field, and help the Twins win some ballgames. I think he can do this, while others disagree. We'll find out soon enough.
  10. No jinx this year, I hope. If two of those three stay healthy, we have a shot. If two go down, it's deja vu. Great post, all of it. It could be a bumpy ride, and those batting numbers are concerning. The hitting has been woeful going back to last year, some of it tied to injuries. Along with Buxton and Donaldson missing the playoffs, Arraez and Polanco were running on bum legs. Cruz was struggling with the wrist thing. Fortunately, all of these key hitters look healthy now, and we're going to need them to sustain us until the others can figure things out. I get that spring training is for getting your work in, but you expect to see progress. Our starting pitching looks promising, I think, with good young arms waiting in the wings. I think Dobnak will team with Berrios and Maeda to give us a big three, and I still like Mike. I think the bullpen will come together as well, because in Wes I trust. Hitting and health are the keys for me. Buckle up, yes, and let's see what we have here. Fans in the stands, an April start, a Twins team with pitching: it's time to play ball.
  11. Pls see my response to adorduan, above. MLB.com lists Astudillo's on-base percentage as .335.
  12. Text reads "MLB Career Stats": https://www.mlb.com/player/willians-astudillo-553902 If you want to parse the numbers, you can do so. I would expect career stats to reflect actual ballgames. If not, MLB.com should clarify.
  13. Astudillo has a career average of .318. Source is MLB.com.
  14. $$$ -- Gotta allocate your spend wisely. And do you really want Rosario standing in the way of Kirilloff? You know Alex is coming.
  15. Have at it. Baseball is full of all kinds of wonderful stats, and fielding is in there. Our problem the last two years in the playoffs has been hitting. In 39 ABs this spring, Astudillo has 15 hits, 10 RBI, an average of .385, and an OPS of 1.235. Over his career he's hitting .318. I wasn't addressing you, but you're free to chime in. You're the "Dobnak is fools gold, and spent already" guy, aren't you? Just confirming ;-)
  16. It must kill you every time Willians gets a hit. If I recall correctly, you're also a doubter when it comes to Dobnak. As much as you like to dump on them, make sure to give credit where credit is due when they win us a few ballgames. Maybe more than a few ballgames.
  17. Rooker hasn't looked comfortable the past week -- probably pressing. I like Stashak over Law and Waddell right now. Astudillo brings a spark and versatility. I can't argue with any of these choices. Now let's get those bats going. I expect Donaldson, Cruz, Polanco, Buxton, Arraez, and Astudillo to start strong. Fingers crossed on the others.
  18. I'd like to harness Dobnak's magic right out of the gate, but understand that assurances may have been made to others. Is any thought being given to a 6-man rotation to start the season? Would there be any resistance from Maeda and Berrios? My understanding of Maeda's contract is that it's incentive-heavy, tied to innings, so that could be a consideration. Otherwise I think a 6-man rotation is a good way to ease us into a season that promises to be almost three times as long as last year. Injuries or poor play will inevitably get us back to five starters soon enough.
  19. Hard not to pull for the son of a guy named Joe Law. I can't help but picture Jack Webb of Dragnet fame with a baseball in his hand, ready to dispense some hard justice. You just know this guy is familiar with chin music. With his solid four-pitch mix, is there any possibility of making Derek Law into a long reliever? Let's say we begin the year with a six-person rotation that includes Dobnak. Law looks like he'd hold up pretty well in terms of durability.
  20. It's shocking how fast Kyle Gibson dropped off of my personal radar. And after so many years of pulling for him to put it all together, and sustain it. Good for him. No regrets here though. Changes of scenery can be good for all.
  21. It's cognitive dissonance, with an "i," if we're scoring for accuracy. Just throwing that out there I'm one who has expressed my support for the current front office, but it's not because I necessarily think they're exemplary humans. I'm not in a position to say. I do think they've shown signs of being exemplary baseball + businesspeople. As such, they know what Kirilloff may be capable of and are in the best position to make the call on what to do with him. I trust them not to needlessly antagonize one of our potential future cornerstones. If Kirilloff does earn a spot in camp and they still hold him back, I'll chalk it up to the front office deciding the extra year of control outweighs the ill will they'll earn. Interestingly, Buxton may serve as an interesting test case of the wisdom of holding back a player. Will he let bygones be bygones and re-up? We'll soon find out. Ultimately, I think the system needs to be changed so that no one -- ballplayer or front office -- is put in this position. I think that's something we all agree on.
  22. Arraez and Rooker platooning to begin the year, with Kirilloff given a chance to make the position his own a month or two into the season. What happens in left field should be fun to watch. I liked Eddie at the plate, but tired of his casual play in the field. I don't think we'll see any of that from these guys.
  23. "I don’t really want to receive hate mail so I’ll keep him at the number four slot." Maybe if this was Phillies Daily, but I think you're on solid ground here, Matthew. I'm with you pretty much the entire way, especially the idea of a combo Odo-Dobnak no. 5. I like Berrios when he's on his game, but I'd like a very short lease if he's my number 3. I'm also a little queasy about Hill, but there aren't (m)any no. 4 starters with a stronger playoff history. I'd love for one of the middle starters to turn it on and become lights-out this postseason, but I'm not sure who the best candidate is. Maybe Jose starts to feel it? Could we see Dobnak turn it around again? My biggest hope is that Maeda and Pineda keep doing what they've been doing of late. Two rocks heading into the postseason would be a treat we haven't had in a long time.
