  1. The Giants show that a retool is possible at a limited cost. They brought in two reasonably priced arms (Wood and DeScalfani) to complement Gausman. Veterans got healthy and bounced back, and they added a few other free agent pieces. The Twins could do something similar. There is a real opportunity cost to giving up on 2022 with the amount of talent still on the Twins.
  2. Retooling around Berrios and Rogers is a better approach than a full rebuild. Even though things don't look great for 2022, I'm not sure they look much better for 2023 and 2024. At least in 2022 they will have Berrios and Maeda in their primes. They can build on that. The lineup will be good in 2022. It probably gets worse after in 2023 and 2024 that when Buxton and Donaldson depart. I am not confident that Kiriloff, Larnach, and Royce Lewis entering the primes will make up the difference of what they will lose after 2022. They're aren't any great pitching prospects that are likely to emerge as front line arms in 2023 or 2024. Neither a retool nor a rebuild is a great option. But the presumption should be to compete every year, unless there is a clear future advantage to giving up present competitiveness. I don't think that's the case here.
  3. I agree that it's too early to start talking trades. This team has more talent than it has displayed so far. 7 games back in mid-May is not an insurmountable deficit, especially since the White Sox and Cleveland are also flawed and unlikely to post much above 90 wins. The 2009 Twins were 5.5 back and under .500 in late May, and they came back to win the division. Just like the 2021 team, the 2009 Twins had a similar roster to other playoff seasons. The 2009 team underachieved in the early months, but then the true talent revealed itself and they righted the ship. The 2021 Twins can do the same.
  4. I agree that it is unfair to blame the Torres hit on Sano. That was an absolute rocket - I am not sure that Brooks Robinson comes up with that one.
  5. Marwin Gonzalez is a good choice as a replacement for Sano at third base, at least until Lewis is ready. Marwin's career range factor at 3b in 133 games is 2.74. This would rank 7th in major league baseball this year, just ahead of Jose Ramirez.
