I don't want to give anyone the impression that I'm hung up on one or two solitary moments in what will be a series of moments as the long season marches on.

Some moments will go our way and some moments won't. That's baseball in a nutshell.

With that said... I would like to revisit the 8th inning of the season opener yesterday to make a broader point.

The Twins were in position to win the game. Vance Worley was out dueled by Verlander but the Vanimal did his job, by keeping the Twins within striking distance.

Top of the 8th with Detroit leading 3-2. Duensing dug himself a hole, Fielder led off with a single, followed by a walk of Vmart and the Tigers had two runners on with nobody out. With Dirks coming to the plate, it didn't take a crystal ball to predict a sacrifice bunt in this situation. A quick meeting at the mound was held to discuss how to cover the bunt I assume and the bunt was executed down the third base line.

It is my contention that the defensive call for the bunt was the wrong one. The Twins opted to charge the corners while the SS covered 2nd and the 2B covered first, leaving 3B uncoverered. This was a mistake and here's why... Fielder on second is the most important base runner in this scenerio and he's slow to boot. Escobar at SS should have come over to cover third or Plouffe could have stayed home. If you had to leave a base unoccupied... It should have been second. Left handed pitchers like Deunsing typically fall off the mound to the third base side and when fielding a bunt they don't have to spin or move their feet to make a short throw to third for a force and did I mention that Fielder is slow. After watching the play... I believe that Fielder was forced if someone was covering the bag.

OK let's move on from that... Chances are... A sacrifice would have been successful despite a different bunt coverage plan. Peralta is then intentionally walked which is the correct move and the bases are loaded with one out. Duensing needs a strikeout and he does that with a beautiful pitch that Avila looks at.

That was a big moment... The type of moment that can lead to victory. Each member of the Twins should have been doing a mental fist pump when strike three was called.

Here is where the wheels fell off. Roenicke comes in to face Infante and his first pitch was awful... It wasn't a 60 foot ball in the dirt. It was a 50 footer. It was as bad a pitch as you will see.

On any ball in the dirt and I mean any ball in the dirt. The catcher has to get down to block it. For reasons beyond understanding, Joe stood up, increasing the size of his 5 hole ten fold. Under no circumstances do you stand up with a ball in the dirt. It was a bad pitch no doubt, but blockable by a major league catcher... Blockable by a high school catcher to be honest. If Joe just handles his position fundamentally correct. The ball could have still skipped through but he couldn't have been logically blamed for it because it was a wild pitch. By standing up he gave himself very little chance to knock the ball down and prevent the run. Roenicke was charged with a wild pitch and his teammate failed to save him.

This made the game 4-2 instead of 3-2 and any possible momentum from the Big Duensing strikeout was gone and the context of the game was immediately changed.

In the bottom of the 8th... Dozier and Escobar were retired before Hicks did a nice job working a two out walk.

If the game is still 3-2. You green light Hicks to get him in scoring position.

If he is thrown out... You lead off the ninth with your best hitter Joe Mauer. Hopefully still only down one run... If he steals second... They probably walk Joe but that puts another duck on the pond for the Hammer if he catches one but more importantly a runner is in scoring position so all he needs is a single to tie.

With a 4-2 deficit... Hicks is frozen at 1st and Mauer has to change his approach in his mind to entertain the thought of trying to tie it with a homer.

That passed ball wild pitch was huge. Joe was guilty.

Honestly... I'm not hung up on that moment. Joe is an amazing baseball player and I'm pleased as punch that he plays for my ball club. It's game 1 of 162 and we have a long way to go. Joe will save a few games along the way.

I just wanted to say that plays like that... Standing up on a ball in a dirt is what losing teams do.

If anyone is still searching for a reason why the Baltimore Orioles won the AL east last year despite average to below average pitching and average to below average hitting. You just saw an example of what not to do yesterday with Joe Mauer if you want to win games against the odds.

Admittedly... I didn't watch all 162 games that the Orioles played last year but I'm pretty certain that they won the AL east because the catcher didn't stand up when balls were thrown in the dirt.

The title of this blog is “The Great 2012 Mulligan do-over”. The alternate title that I was thinking of using was “This is a complete waste of time and yours but take a look anyway”. Another title under consideration was “How I spend my days at home as I use my vacation time before the end of the year” and perhaps the best title, that I didn’t use was “The Longest Blog in Twins History”.

I put a lot of time into this and some may find it interesting, if they can actually make it through the whole thing while others will shake their head in disbelief over how I spent about 14 hours. Either way, it’s done and I present it to the fine folks at Twins Daily.

What I’ve done is re-play the 2012 Twins Season game by game with one major adjustment. Instead of using the actual starting pitchers that we trotted out in 2012, I have substituted their numbers with the starting pitcher results from our current 2013 Twins rotation.

So you don’t lose complete interest to soon… Here are the Results:

The Twins finish 76-86 in mulligan do-over 2012 season.

Actually it was 72-81-9… Let me explain the “9” real quick. Those were games that resulted in ties after the starting pitching replacement adjustment. They would have needed extra innings and no data to complete them. In order to break those 9 ties, I decided to simply match the winning percentage of this Twins experiment and make the record 4-5 in those 9 games for a final total of a 76-86 record.

This ends up being a 10 game improvement and still disappointing but what would be interesting… if this experiment had any validity… was the 43-42 record at the All-Star Break. That record would have had the Twins 3 games back and in that scenario the Twins could have been buying at the trade deadline. The Twins could have been the team that traded with the Marlins to acquire Sanchez and Infante and the addition of Sanchez or another starting pitcher could have changed the dynamic of this experiment.

So… how did this work… Well, let’s just say… that I had to make some judgment calls and I will lay those judgment calls out for you. I will let you decide if those judgment calls were reasonable or unreasonable. Keep in mind that this whole thing is a little on the unreasonable side from the get go.

I ended up using 7 pitchers to complete all 162 starts of 2012. Here are the pitchers and the adjustments/judgment calls that I made.

    #1 Vance Worley

Vance Worley made 23 starts for the Phillies last year so I assigned all 23 Phillie starts to the 2012 Twins schedule using the results from each of his starts in exact order. He was injured at the end of the year 2012. So I piled his starts up at the start of the year and shut him down in early August after his 23 starts. Worley does not appear in rotations 24 thru 33.

    #2 Kevin Correia

Kevin made 28 starts for the Pirates last year so I assigned him 28 starts for the 2012 Twins using the results from each of his Pirate starts in exact order. I did not use any of his bullpen appearances, focusing only on each start. I removed Kevin from the 2012 Twins rotation for about 20 days in August… Rotations 21 thru 24 to make the number of starts match.

    #3 Scott Diamond

Here is where the judgment calls start coming into play a little more aggressively. Scott made 27 starts at the end of 2012. However I made the judgment call that the 2013 rotation would certainly feature Diamond starting the year. So I moved the Majority of Scott’s actual starts to the beginning of the year. That’s a pretty big adjustment but I felt it was necessary to make this experiment work. In consideration of Scott only making 27 out of a possible 33 starts last year. I had to bench him for 6 starts and I chose that time out of convenience for the experiment. Diamond does not appear in rotations 10 thru 15.

    #4 Mike Pelfrey

A fairly big judgment call was made on Pelfrey. He was hurt for the majority of 2012 and only made 3 starts. This made his 2012 numbers basically useless. So I decided to use his first 23 starts of 2011 with the Mets and transfer the results to the Twins 2012 schedule. I only used the first 23 starts because he’s not guaranteed to be ready on opening day. I made the call to not include him in rotations 1 thru 9. 23 2011 starts fit to finish out the rest of the 2012 Twins schedule.

    #5 Shaun Marcum

This is obviously a big judgment call. I realize that this makes this experiment unreasonable but let’s face it… the whole thing is a stretch anyway. I included Marcum for this reason. I think the Twins have to sign one more arm at least. If they have to sign one more arm. Let’s pick the best fit and in my opinion that was Marcum. So I included Marcum… Forgive me my transgressions. Now I’m using his 2012 starts with the Brewers and he only made 21 of them. He had a lengthy stay on the DL. Therefore Marcum does not appear in rotations 14 thru 24.

#6 and #7 Kyle Gibson and Liam Hendriks.

Here are a couple other judgment calls I made for the purposes of this experiment.

After totaling up the starts from Worley, Correia, Diamond, Pelfrey and Marcum. I came up 40 starts short of 162. I needed two replacements and I decided that Kyle Gibson and Liam Hendriks were the obvious choices. One big problem with that… I have no MLB data from Kyle Gibson to use. What I did to fix that, was to determine that Gibson would make 18 starts in 2012 and I based this upon: possibly not being ready by opening day and the innings limit that he will be under in 2013. Gibson could make 18 MLB starts and that was about the max that I was comfortable with.

That would leave 22 starts left for Hendriks to gobble up. Hendriks only made 16 starts last year and this became a problem as well.

To solve these problems, I made a couple large judgment calls… even larger than using Marcum. I needed a comparable pitcher to use in place of… For Gibson someone who made 18 starts in 2012. I would simply use that pitcher as the proxy for Gibson. I didn’t want to make Gibson a superstar and I didn’t want to make him a failure because some have high expectations for him. I decided to look for as average as I could find. Using 18 starts as a guide, I found a guy with 18 starts and a 3.91 ERA. Those are close to average numbers and a fair comparable for Gibson in my mind. The Pitcher is Matt Garza. Matt Garza circa 2012 will serve as a replacement for Gibson. When you see me place Gibson results… They are Garza’s 2012 results with the Cubs. I realize that Garza may be considered pretty high end but I chose him for his 3.91 ERA and that alone.

To solve Hendriks… I could have used his 16 starts and taken 6 starts from Deduno or something, but for simplicity… I decided to replace Hendriks 2012 starts all together. One of the main reasons that I decided to do this was improvement. I made the judgment that Hendriks in 2013 would be better than Hendriks in 2012. Using 22 starts as a guide… I found a pitcher with 22 starts and a 4.24 ERA in 2012 to serve as a proxy for Hendriks. That pitcher is Zach McAllister of the Indians. When you see placement of Hendriks results. They are McAllister’s 2012 results with the Indians. If you don’t understand why I did this… In a nutshell… Hendriks… I just felt it was necessary to project him up a little and I needed 6 additional starts so I projected him up a little to Zach McAllister’s 4.24 as a proxy.

For those of you, who have read this far and still with me. I’m very impressed because I’m sure I’ve lost quite a few along the way.

What follows is the work. First it’s the rotations that I set up for the entire year. If you wonder what “MDWCH” means. That’s the assignment of each 5 game rotations. Marcum-M Diamond-D Worley-W Correia-C and Hendriks-H… Rotation 2 would be the next five games and so on.

Following the Rotations is the game log… All 162 games of 2012 and the Starting Pitchers results substituted in each game and a new result calculated. I made no adjustment for offense, errors or bullpen results. Whatever they were… They were.

If you still have questions… Looking at the game log should answer them. Result is the actual result of the game. OSPR is Original Starting Pitcher Result… The Name of the actual pitcher followed by IP R and ER… SUB is who I replaced him with Pitcher and Start Number Used. Marcum START ONE is simply Marcum’s First start of the year. ASPR is Adjusted Starting Pitcher Result. OUTCOME is what happened after the adjustment. Followed by a running total of the Pitchers record and the Teams Actual Record and Adjusted Record.

The Godfather II is one of the greatest movies of all time. The dialogue in the movie is top notch and worthy of the first class plot line.

One scene (of many) that struck me in the movie was the meeting between Michael and Hyman Roth at his Florida home. In the discussion between the two heavyweights. Michael discussed the fate of Pentangeli saying that "Pentangeli is a dead man". For someone as powerful as Michael to make such a strong statement about the life of a human being was a heavy moment, but, it was the response of Roth that really set the correct tone of the nature of the business they are in.

Roth replied "He's Small Potatoes", as he took a bite of his tuna fish sandwich.

It was a great line but it was made perfect by Roths casualness and ease of the thought of Pentangeli's death, so casual was the moment that it didn't even interrupt his meal. The bite of Tuna fish made the line stand out and it left the perfect impression with the movie watcher, you understood, the cold blooded nature of business.

My first blog isn't a movie revue. It's a blog to point out that September callups are here and the Twins roster is about to be filled with some new players with a future (hopefully) and other's who are small potatoes.

Each of these players is an individual human story. They have dreams and I would imagine, in every case, that dream is to be a major league ball player. They spend years working on their craft in the minors. Bus rides, call ups and send downs, per diem, cramped living quarters and a salary that won't secure a future for their family by itself, as a matter of fact, a salary that makes you poorer than a large majority of the working poor.

Just getting to the major leagues for a handful of at-bats has to be the most exciting time in their young (or not so young) life. Not only for them but for family and friends cheering for them at home. They come from different backgrounds of economic status. Some of them will come from an upbringing that is way beyond our comprehension. An upbringing where food isn't just a trip to the refrigerator away, shoes are not taken for granted, getting a decent education is near impossible, and they are surrounded by people living in the same conditions, conditions augmented by guns and drugs.

It's easy for us as fans to throw these players away. They are after all small potatoes. We have all read the comments about baseball players, comments that can be thoughtless and quite mean spirited. I personally think, the reason for the tone of some of these comments is that we are emotionally invested in the team itself and not so much the individuals. It's so easy for us to write off a player and take a bite of our sandwich without any thought of the humanity. The individual dream that is being played out before your eyes is easily lost on us because we are not looking for it.

With the 2012 season, for the most part, in the books. The Twins will not be playing in the post season. All we have left is the individual story, I think its a good idea to try and walk a mile in their shoes while watching the fleeting moments of major league opportunity. Get behind each of these players and remember that they are human and they have individual stories and dreams. If you try to look at it from their point of view. Each baseball moment will be bigger for you and you will find a different level of happiness if they happen to go yard, bloop a single or hang a zero and walk off the mound.

The Tuna will at least taste better.
