  1. I'm fine with picking up a fixer-up-er, if they sign a Wheeler & Pineda. That gives us 4 really solid starters, a 4A pitcher for a 5 and the fixer-up-er for Pineda through suspension. Decide on the 4A (Graterol) or fixer-up-er for 5 when he comes back. Is it really as easy to get a guy to ditch sinker for 4 seamer and then throw the "slurve"? It seems like I see this "fix" a lot. It would seem like this fix is similar to having a guy add a change up or the sinker staple of past franchises. I really haven't seen this franchise do much fixing with starters. Hopefully Johnson is trying multiple methods based on the pitchers strengths. It would also seem like having all your pitchers doing the same thing would be less effective also.
  2. Nothing needs to be done with Cruz. Has another year, and will probably gladly take another similar deal at the end of it if offered at his age. It's value may go down. I'll be interested to see what they do in pitching. I'd dangle Rosario, but he alone probably won't fetch much more than a Gibson. Would adding Rooker move the needle? Gerrit Cole would be awesome, but it will probably take closer to 40mil to get him to spend his summers in MN.
  3. Just checked Hulu that I normally get FSNorth. They do not have MLB network either.
  4. I agree with above. Plan to win the series and realize that at least 2 games may be ugly.
  5. I too have been a fan since 1976. The inconsistent feelings about this team is confusing to me also. I can't remember a time when this organization from top to bottom was in such good shape. If in March, anyone would have suggested that we were going to have this season, you would have been called a Pohlad Pocket Protector or something worse. Turning many decent prospects, that had not had much major league success, into one of the best lineups in baseball is a major coup. Having pitching be inconsistent is normal and building pitching probably takes more time anyway. 6 months ago, most Twins fans felt the organization was 2-3 years away from having a World Series competitive team. August 1st of this year, we should have traded those guys to help the current group that is not the core group for the World Series contending plan? I know everyone wants immediate gratification, but any organization has to have a plan, "Process over Results" so to speak. A sound process will give positive results over the long haul. If occasional good results cause a management team to alter their process, that management team will be short term. I do believe that the organization will lose some good people this off season. I also feel like the organization is well positioned to replace those people, as any good team should be.
  6. Big Mike should be a priority. But Odo will get a nice contract somewhere, it might as well be here, unless its a 5 @ $20 or something stupid like that. I'm not sure I'd even offer anything to Gibson. I know health issues have affected him, but doing charity work in a contract season was risky at best. God bless him.
  7. Hurried home from work, and made the 30 minute drive to Cedar Rapids. Cars were parking in odd places but found a fairly close space. Got up to the parking lot level and wondered if I shouldn't have checked the news. Got into the stadium and it was clear, no Buxton. Some rain the night before and some predicted drizzle meant that they kept him at the hotel. Javier looked "not overwhelmed" on this night, so there's that!
  8. I'm starting to question the pitching philosophy from top to bottom. 1. I do believe this year started as an audition for Odo, Gibby, hell all of them, to see where they were at, keep or dump. I'll keep Berrios, Pineda & maybe Perez for a swingman. 2. As the bullpen is constructed now, I'll take it. But you can't have starters go 4-6 innings every game. The horrible Utube broadcast even brought that up. Baseball has to get back to starters going deeper. Football has a concussion problem that is limiting participation, Baseball has an arm falling off problem that will drag it down. 3. Twins pitchers have become very predictable. Nibble, nibble, uncompetitive chase pitch & repeat. Part of this is that they don't have anyone with wipe out stuff, but really there are maybe 10 pitchers in MLB that have clearly wipe out stuff. With analytics, why are they not using better pitch sequencing? If Wes wants to keep his job, I'd suggest that he start calling pitches. I'm not sure there is a pitcher on this staff that should have the clout to shake off the catcher 4 times while the infielders just stand there and watch the same crappy nibbles over and over. 4. Do you suppose the fielding would be better with more competitive starts? Not sure it will happen next year, but I'm ready for Kiriloff at 1st, Polonco at 2nd, Lewis at SS. Arraez may have to play third. Rosario gets traded for pitching and Buxton starts playing in pads.
  9. It is pretty apparent to me that "de-emphasizing starters" is blowing up right now, as no one can roster enough bull pen arms to keep up with starters that can't go 6 + innings. We will see, but developing starters to get through more of the game could be the "new" way.
  10. Starters go 6-7 innings, the pen does ok. Not overwhelming, but functional. Starters go less than 6, and all but Pineda have been fairly consistent at that lately, and the pen is hot garbage.
  11. The "box" would have been to pull him after 2 or 3. Odo had to throw last night. If nothing else to try and find some sort of rhythm or something for himself. Short start after short start does not seem to be helping him.
  12. Complaining about this FO not making a splash on a FA reliever is legit, however their chances of a swing and miss were greater than Sano on a medium to high velocity fastball. Bullpens across baseball suck this year, with the exception of maybe the Yankees. Using hindsight, as we can now, it would seem that making a trade now for a known (as in this year and now) relief pitcher is the smart thing to do. Put Sano and some 40 man or soon prospects up to Toronto or whoever to get a starter and 2 relievers and lets get this done. Let's roll with Marwin & Arraez at 3rd and move on from a guy that just seems to be needing a change. I know he hits the long ball, but his attitude just doesn't seem to fit this team and sometimes you got to give up something to get something. Adding some pitchers with a couple years control also helps address pitching for next couple years.
  13. Every baseball team will have stretches like this. That being said, this team appears to have checked out mentally. There is absolutely no excuse for these errors. Hitting is hard, but it also seems like there may be a lack of concentration going on here also or maybe they are just trying to hit home runs and not execute a plan. We knew pitching would regress, but the defense and offensive plan need to improve. Berrios & Pineda seem to me to be reliable starters, lets go make a deal with Toronto for Stroman & Giles and hope that gets attitudes corrected!
  14. True, yet decision seems to be organization wide and made during off season.
  15. Per the discussion on openers. I wonder if the Twins have realized that for every advantage of an opener, there are disadvantages. If an opener goes bad, it potentially really limits your options in the bullpen. It seems that they have opted to stretch out outings from the pen which in turn should, optimize pen usage.
  16. I'm probably concerned more with Berrios than Pineda at this exact moment. Pineda is trending the right direction, seems to start slow in games and then get better. I wish he was in better shape, but round is a shape and it may be affecting his ability to get loose more than pitch deep in games. Pineda has experience and I think he will be a plus in playoff baseball. Berrios seems to have lost some control. He was having a pretty good outing last time out until the offense wouldn't let him get back on the mound. Would still like my ace to be able to go out and get 6 complete in that situation. Doesn't matter if he gives up some runs in that scenario, just get through the innings. His pitch count didn't allow him to do that. The bullpen seems to be good as long as starters are going deep. Next level analysis, I know. But, this makes me believe they will be ok in playoffs with all the off days.
  17. While I would like to say Buck is the best Twins hitter and should be in the leadoff spot, I think we are all looking at his potential. Bottom line is that he has a new approach, whether we want to admit it or not, fragile confidence and still has plate appearances where his pitch recognition is awful. I wouldn't mind seeing him move up against LHP but otherwise, much like he didn't deserve to be brought up last September, he is a good fit at 9 against RHP. One of the few times I have sided with John on this pod other than his choice of beer!
  18. I've wondered myself what they do with Schoop if he has a season like he is having. I'd guess Arraez has maybe provided a peak into that answer. Do wish Gordon would have been healthy so he could have made this call up. Just want to see what he can be, finally.
  19. What was wrong with Odorizzi's fate? Did something happen after the game? I thought he did pretty well, had trouble putting guys away, obviously. Would like to see him pitch deeper, but he limited damage while in.
  20. What would Cave & Rooker bring in a trade? Seems like a position of strength. If they are limiting Graterol's innings, should he be coming out of the pen? Maybe after an opener? I think he could help the Twins, but this year would most likely be from the bullpen and I'd like to see him get some reps from the pen in the minors instead of the majors.
