  • Twins Minor League Report (6/8): Sweep Complete!

    Seth Stohs

It was a sweep for the Minnesota Twins and their minor league affiliates on Wednesday night. Wins have been infrequent for the Twins, and on this night, it their bats that led to the win. In the minors, it was more about the traditional way to win, strong pitching. Looking at the four starting pitchers in the minors, they combined to give up three runs over 27 innings. The bullpens then combined for nine scoreless innings. Pitching wins, and on this night, the Twins affiliates got some great pitching!

Continue reading if you would like more information from your Minor League Report. By the end of the day on Thursday, the Twins will have drafted five players they hope to sign. Keep up with everything related to the draft here at Twins Daily.

    RED WINGS REPORT

    Rochester 3, Buffalo 1

    Box Score

Tommy Milone put together another strong start for the Red Wings, and JT Chargois shut the door as the Red Wings improved to 35-25, the best record in the International League. Milone started and improved to 4-0 with a 1.94 ERA with seven strong innings. He gave up one run on eight hits and two walks. He struck out six. In the eighth inning, Mike Quade used three pitchers for one out apiece. David Martinez, Ryan O’Rourke and JT Chargois each got an out. Chargois pitched a clean ninth inning to record his fourth save.

Buck Britton went 2-3 with a walk. John Ryan Murphy had the two biggest hits in the game. His fourth double drove in a run, and he also had an RBI single.

    CHATTANOOGA CHATTER

    Chattanooga 5, Jacksonville 2

    Box Score

Aaron Slegers was solid on the mound again and his battery mate provided some of the power. Slegers worked the first seven innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two batters. Luke Westphal gave up a hit and a walk, but he pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Trevor Hildenberger pitched a quick, perfect ninth inning to record his eighth Lookouts save.

Shannon Wilkerson led the offense. The outfielder went 3-4 with his fifth double. Travis Harrison added his 11th double and a walk. Leonardo Reginnato went 2-5. Stuart Turner added his third home run of the season.

The first four runs (three earned) scored by the Lookouts came against former Twins minor leaguer, lefty Matt Tomshaw. He was a minor league Rule 5 pick of the Marlins following the 2014 season.

The Lookouts are inching closer to that .500 mark at 29-30 on the season.

    MIRACLE MATTERS

Ft. Myers 1, Brevard County 0

    Box Score

Tyler Jay may not have had his best stuff, but the results were terrific again. Jay gave up seven hits and walked two, but he threw six shutout innings. He struck out four. He has now thrown 15 consecutive shutout innings to drop his season ERA to 2.18.

He was replaced by Luke Bard who struck out two over two scoreless innings. Yorman Landa worked the ninth to maintain the shutout and record his third save. Miracle pitchers were helped tremendously by five double plays.

The pitching had little margin for error as the Brewers’ affiliate held the Miracle offense to just five hits and struck out 15. The lone run came in the fourth inning. With two outs, Edgar Corcino singled. Chris Paul doubled him in from first base.

TJ White batted third in his return from Chattanooga. Joe Maloney played his first game for their Miracle. They batted third and fourth, respectively, and each had one hit. Maloney’s hit was a triple.

For Brevard County, former Twins prospect Zack Jones made his first appearance of the year on a rehab assignment. The Rule 5 pick threw one inning. He walked one and struck out two.

    KERNELS NUGGETS

Cedar Rapids 6, Kane County 0

    Box Score

The reports coming out of Ft. Myers this spring indicated that Fernando Romero was throwing well, and throwing hard. He recently was promoted to the Kernels and has been fantastic ever since. On this night, the strong right-hander improved to 4-0 and dropped his ERA to 1.17 with seven shutout innings. He gave up four hits, walked one and struck out seven. Michael Cederoth worked the final two innings and kept the shutout. He walked one and struck out three.

The Kernels got it going early. Zander Wiel had an RBI double. It was followed by a two-run blast off the bat of AJ Murray, his sixth homer of the year. In the seventh inning, the Kernels got RBI singles from JJ Fernandez and Luis Arraez, followed by an RBI double by Sean Miller. Arraez went 2-4 with a double. LaMonte Wade walked twice.

Wow what a day, you learn to appreciate these days much more with an 18-40 team. I've know about Fernando Romero since he and Rosario landed TJ about the same time and I didn't think too much of them.. wow I was dumb.. from what I've heard Romero has ACE stuff and is lighting it up! 97-99 MPH consistently with 91-92 MPH slider, just filthy!

I was just starting to think a few weeks ago Jay was drafted to be a reliever in MLB, now he's on a streak with only 3 ER in his last 6 starts. thats awesome.

Drink up we may not see the clean sweep again for awhile!

Just checked out the DSL Twins who played a double header. Wander Javier only played in the first game and went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a strikeout. All three hits were line drives according to the play-by-play.

Great starts for Jay and Romero. On the topic of Romero, what would be his timeline to be promoted to Ft Meyers. It's not like Romero is in Ceder Rapids because he has not pitched well, he is there now due to injuries that kept him out since 2014. I think he could be a pitcher they move through the ranks more aggressively due to the fact injuries are his only issue this far.

I think another thing that predicts he may move quickly is that he is getting great results and still throwing strikes with 67% of his pitches. He sure looks overpowering in this video from last night:

Several of the FTM staff will be promoted at some point, at which point someone from CR is going to need to replace them.  I'd think he'd be on the list.  Problem though is that with him not pitching for so long, you could make a case for him finishing out the year in Iowa.

We've seen some pretty good pitching performances in CR at times, but hard to recall any much more dominant than Romero's last night. Some filthy stuff. I've only seen him in one other start since arriving here and that was his 2nd start, down in Burlington. Didn't get ahead of hitters as consistently then as he did this time.

Seth, thanks for all of the information that you provide. What are the reports on Hildenberger's secondary pitches?

Separately, with Romero dominating and the growing thought that TJ surgery may have a limited shelf life, will he be promoted more aggressively than normal? It seems like he would benefit more from facing tougher competition, even if on a restricted innings basis, than he does from overpowering people in Low A.

SD... was the 'slow' CR gun still reading 92-94 on Romero's FB last night? If so, did he maintain it throughout the game? The thee pitch sequence in the video above suggested good velocity and great location.

Also, while Romero may not have the 6'3" height of a front-line starter, he sure has the powerful lower half of one. His legs are like tree trunks!

Rosario, Thorpe and Romero all got hurt within a few months of each other and had Tommy John within 4-6 months of each other. So much talent.

And... Jay wasn't drafted to be a reliever.

Yup, he had a good day... went from 1-7 to 4-11... .167 to .364 in one game!! He's going to be fine!

They'll be very cautious, I would think, this entire season. They'll monitor not only his innings, but just how he looks and feels. They may use the Trackman advanced data that they have set up at each of their affiliates to monitor him more closely than most. I'd won't be surprised if he keeps this up and gets back to Ft. Myers, but they'll be wisely cautious.

Seth, thanks for all of the information that you provide. What are the reports on Hildenberger's secondary pitches?

Hildenberger throws his fastball in the 92-94 range from a couple of different angles. He also has a good slider and a changeup. Throws strikes with all of them. He's a very smart guy, throws strikes and keeps the ball in the park with great movement. Talked to him last Fall after the AFL for the story in the 2016 Prospect Handbook on him (last year's TD Minor League RP of the Year). He feels confident with all of his pitches and throwing from different angles.

The "slow" CR gun on the scoreboard is no more. They now have the pitch speed in sync electronically with the TrackMan laptop (except on the rare day when the system isn't being used), so the MPH that shows up on the scoreboard is accurate. (it just takes a couple seconds longer to show up)

And yes, he still was throwing 96-97 in the 7th inning.

Just quietly, JR Murphy has hit safely in his last 6 games (8-22) and has a .278/.333/.444 line for his last 10 games.  Baby steps, but maybe he's beginning to find his mojo at long last.

Would love to see Chargois in the MLB pen.

I was thinking the same thing.  Good to see JRM starting to find some life at the plate and not just behind it.

Understandable. In my opinion with him overpowering A ball hitters it would be good to send Romero to Ft Myers, but then again he had what 3 starts in '14 so they might need to see more of what he can do. If healthy next year I think Romero could challenge how fast he gets promoted, especially if he dominates other levels like he is doing now. Upper 90's fastball and low 90's slider, sheesh if he develops right he could have a higher ceiling than Berrios, Stewart, Gonsalves, Jay, or Thorpe. My concern is Romero throws the slider so hard it might take it's toll on him.

Thanks. His results look MLB-ready, but I've read that he has a tell in his delivery for when he's not throwing a fastball and that better hitters can pick up on it. Is he working on that?
