    It was a busy week. Since we last reported the organization’s statistical leaders, the teams have played seven or eight more games. It’s still early enough in the season that a run of six to eight games can drastically alter the numbers. There are a few more names in these categories than we’ve previously seen, and yet we’ll now start seeing some names more often.

    Since a slow start, Chattanooga has been playing a little over .500. The other three affiliates already have 20 wins. The Twins have had one of the best minor league systems in recent years, both in terms of prospect status, and also in terms of winning percentage. The Twins have finished in the top four among all organizations in winning percentage at its full-season affiliates (meaning Rochester, Chattanooga, Ft. Myers, Cedar Rapids). If you’re like me and believe that learning how to win should be (or is) part of a player’s development, the organization has done well in that category.

    • Rochester is 20-17.
    • Chattanooga is 16-20..
    • Ft. Myers is 20-16.
    • Cedar Rapids is 20-15.

    With that, let’s look at the minor league statistical leaderboard.

    THE HITTERS

    (Rate numbers- minimum 90 plate appearances)

    Plate Appearances - Kennys Vargas (146), Daniel Palka (145), James Beresford (144), Chris Paul/Zander Wiel (143), Leonardo Reginnato (142), Zach Granite/Dalton Hicks (140).

    I don't follow minor league baseball as much as Id like, so I am wondering what does it take for someone like James Beresford (a "non-prospect") to be considered for a call up? How much better would he have to do?

    I would say the 2012 class has a ton of potential, and there are some solid prospects. 

     

    There's irony there given that the 2012 class was almost universally hated right after the draft.  Now, it's looking like one of the best classes we've seen a while. Buxton, Berrios, Melotakis, Chargois, Walker, and Duffy could all be difference makers at their positions and there are plenty of talented guys still playing that could still potentially have an impact.

    I don't follow minor league baseball as much as Id like, so I am wondering what does it take for someone like James Beresford (a "non-prospect") to be considered for a call up? How much better would he have to do?

     

    He'd need to get younger and perhaps hit for power a bit more.  He wouldn't be a bad utility player in the majors except for the real problem that the ML roster is occupied by Dozier, Escobar, Nunez, and Polanco up the middle and Plouffe/Sano at 3B.

    Right or wrong, it's the power of the 40 man roster spots. 

     

    I think if one of the Plouffe, Nunez, Dozier, Escobar group was going to be out for a long time, known right away, they could 60 Day that player and call up Beresford. Right now, the Plouffe and Escobar injuries have been believed to be 15 day varieties, so they don't want to lose someone from the 40 man roster. 

     

    Beresford his done all he can. He's been terrific at AAA the last two years. He has nothing more to prove. At 27, he kind of is what he is right now. He isn't going to become a home run hitter. But he will play good defense at 4 positions in the infield. 

     

    I hope that he gets a shot.

    Correct... they are at 39 on the 40-man. 

     

    Wimmers is not on the 40 man.

    The trouble is, if you add Beresford, then you run the risk of losing him if he is sent back out. Is he valuable to the AAA team? Better to reward him a call-up at season's end if you do have a 40-man hole, or someone on the 60-day DL. Then, as the season ends, he is still eligible to be cut for some other hot young prospect, but still remain (maybe out of gratitude) with the organization, unless someone really comes calling.

     

    The situation the Twins face with Mastro, now. If they do send him down to the minors, he will have to go thru waivers and you run the risk of losing him, good or bad for one party or the other. Fine if you don't need him. Bad if you don't have someone to advance if you lose him.

    Flankly, there are better people to move off the 40-man roster and most of them are in the Twins' pen.  I'd move Walker off (by trade) before Vargas.

    Only risk losing Beresford if he is DFAd, not if he is optioned. And yes, he has value for that Rochester roster.

     

    Mastroianni could be lost because he is out of options. Beresford's never been on the 40 man to be optioned.

    There is never going to be a roster spot here for Vargas with Park being legit.
