Yesterday, we discussed the top starting pitcher performers in the Twins system in May. Today, we shift to the offense and find out who the top hitters were in the organization during the season’s first month. 

This morning, the Ft. Myers Miracle had a major announcement. Starting today, they are the Ft. Myers Mighty Mussels.

Predicting future prospect success can be an exercise in futility. There are far more minor league players that never reach the big leagues than prospects that become big league regulars. One of the main reasons the Twins Prospect Handbook is created is to tell the stories of most players in the organization.

In the last few editions of the Twins Prospect Handbook, the authors have all selected “breakout” prospects. A “breakout” player was defined as a player in our own Top 30 that we think will make a leap into the Top 10.

We changed the definition in the 2019 edition of the book because of the influx of players from outside the organization throughout the year. However, it could still be fun to see how last year’s breakout prospects fared during the 2018 campaign.

Over the past month, I wrote up quick profiles for my preliminary Top 50 Twins Prospects rankings. It’s preliminary because over the last two months, I have been working on profiles, backgrounds and scouting reports for about 170 Twins minor leaguers for the soon-to-be-released 2018 Twins Prospect Handbook. Along with Cody Christie and Tom Froemming, we’ve been putting in a lot of hours to produce the 10th annual handbook. More information will be coming to Twins Daily around Christmas.

Now that the 2018 Minnesota Twins Prospect Handbook is complete (order paperback or e-book), it’s time to get to know or catch up with some of those prospects.

Today, we get to know Mitchell Kranson. The Twins drafted the catcher from the University of California in Berkeley with their ninth-round draft pick in 2016. He put together a solid first full season. Berkeley has become a team that the Twins draft many players from. They didn’t draft any in 2017, but in addition to Kranson, the Twins took Alex Schick (6th) and Ryan Mason (13th) from Berkeley. In 2015, the Twins took Chris Paul in the sixth round. In 2014, the Twins took Trevor Hildenberger in the 22nd round and then Michael Theofanopoulos in the 30th round.

Last week the Twins announced that they would be parting ways with the Rochester Red Wings, their long-time Triple-A affiliate. And while there’s compelling speculation that the Twins will link arms with their friends across the river, we mustn't forget about the “world’s biggest small-town” nestled four hours (three and a half if you’re going seven over) west on the prairie. Fargo.

In Part 1, I gave my selections for Twins prospects 41-50. Earlier this week, Part 2 reviewed Twins prospects 31-40. Today, the countdown continues with Part 3, my choices for Twins prospects 26-30. This is an interesting group of prospects. While there is a free agent whom I would hope the Twins would want to bring back, the four other players are high-ceiling types but very raw and inexperienced. They are the types of players who could move up this list a lot in 2018.
