  • Twins Close To Acquiring LHP Jaime Garcia?

    Seth Stohs

Update Friday 4:44 - It's now been about 24 hours since Ken Rosenthal first tweeted that the Twins were close to acquiring Jaime Garcia. As things sit right now, Garcia is set to start for Atlanta and the trade talks are on hold as other teams are now involved. This has been very interesting, with several twists and turns. It will be nice to see it resolved, whatever that means. As fans, however, it is nice to know that the Twins front office is being aggressive and pursuing players as buyers at this time.

    --------------------------------------

Ken Rosenthal was first to report that the Minnesota Twins are close to acquiring veteran LHP Jaime Garcia from the Atlanta Braves.

Recently Rhett Bollinger tweeted that the Twins will trade a minor leaguer to the Braves to complete the deal. Jon Heyman has confirmed that it is a one-for-one deal.

As of midnight Thursday night/Friday morning, the deal was not complete, but most seem to believe that it will still happen.

As the deal becomes final and we learn more about the specifics, we will update this article.

The 31-year-old Garcia debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008. He stayed in that organization through the 2016 season when he was traded.

Last offseason, he was traded to Atlanta in exchange for three minor leaguers.

In 17 starts and 106 innings, Garcia is 3-7 with a 4.33 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. He has walked 40 and struck out 81.

While the front office has said that it wasn't interested in trading for rentals, Garcia is in the final season of a six year, $50 million deal. He is making $12 million this season. He likely has about $4 million remaining on the deal.

Per Mike Berardino (or a source of his) it's possible the trade won't be completed until Friday.

As Thursday turns into Friday, the deal has still not been finalized, though most still believe that it will happen.

    Check back for updates.

One name not brought up in this thread that was mentioned a few times online tonight and is someone I know the Braves are familiar with is Graterol. He's got a huge upside, but he's a pretty "unknown" guy right now, so he could be the kind of high upside, low ceiling guy that gets a deal like this done.

The Braves don't need a catcher on the 40-man. They'd go for Garver because they have a load of catchers at AA or lower and could use one that may be ready in 2018, but they have Murphy's in house.

Right, but Garver is too much. A Murphy for Garia swap is about right. Glancing over the old Brave's system, I'm leaning towards them looking into catchers. They are stacked at short, stacked on arms and pretty set at most spots. Sure, a buffer isn't a bad idea for them. This is just back of the napkin thinking for me though and I'm far from a Brave's pipeline expert.

A good prospect? Sounds rough, but I still like the idea of a solid #3 rental. Won't cost an elite prospect and gives a nice little boost. My money's on Lamonte Wade.

There is a pretty big difference between "decent prospect" and "good prospect"

This car for sale runs pretty good.

This car for sell runs pretty decent.

I'm buying the one that runs good!

Agree. Braves already have Dansby Swanson entrenched at SS and also have Ozzie Albies.  No need for Vielma at this point.

SS is a depth position in the org. Camargo and Swanson in the majors currently, but Jace Peterson is a SS by trade. Albies has moved to 2B to work with Swanson eventually, but they still have a ton of depth at SS down the system. Vielma would perhaps split time in AA. Otherwise, the SS's at every other level are entrenched and prospects the Braves want to develop.

While their catchers may not be nationally known, they've got very good depth at the position from AA on down. Garver would be intriguing, and seriously, with Garcia the best rental pitcher available on the market, to get him off of the market before the deadline, I'd imagine the cost isn't going to be "cheap". It would be a legit prospect. Murphy's not that. I don't see any difference between Anthony Recker and Murphy.

Reading between the LENIII lines, it's a legit prospect, and that should be expected. Likely a guy like a Lewis Thorpe or Mitch Garver or Brusdar Graterol sort of guy.

It's, definitely, not Garver, he played a full game tonight.  We can go ahead and stop that talk now. These is no way he would have played if he was the player traded.

Plus, there is no way you can read between any lines in the Tweet since it consisted of just one line. The one line stated decent. It's semantics, I know.

I think it will be someone a step below Thorpe. I doubt Garver specifically though in terms of prospect value, that's probably about right. Clubs usually don't deal guys like Graterol from the GCL level, it's just premature.

Probably someone in A, A+, or AA, with some ceiling but not top 5 in the org. Stewart is a definite possibility, as is Blankenhorn. Felix Jorge. Lewin Diaz might be a tick rich but his actual performance to date has been mediocre.

Ugh... I feel like I'm going to be pretty disappointed with this move. I don't get signing a rental player. The difference he will make over 10 starts is minimal (and I don't think the Twins stay in it until the end either way). I'd have been ok with giving up quite a bit for a controlled starter like Grey, including Gordon and Gonsalves plus, but to me this is just wasting a limited resource.

And Garcia did his usual throwing tonight. That means minimal. The deal wasn't final, so players played in their games. A few nights ago Todd Frazier played in a game while we all knew he'd been part of a trade but didn't know the trade value. Likewise, Tyler Clippard was warming up even after it was known that he was part of the deal. Until the deal is official, the player can still be used by his current team.

Frazier didn't play the day he was traded. Like the difference between decent and good, there is a difference in playing in a game and maintaining a route. Sure, teams can use the players until a dead is official, but it's just plain stupidity at it's finest. Why wreck a potential deal with an injury?

I'm thinking Kohl Stewart and I could live with that.

Possibly.  I would think that would include the Braves picking up a portion of the remaining salary of Garcia.

Would be nice to settle the 4-5 positions in the rotation.

    EDIT:  Well, cancel that idea:

8:24pm: Minnesota is “very likely” to take over all of Garcia’s remaining salary (about $4.7MM), per 1500 ESPN’s Darren Wolfson (via Twitter).

I don't think Palka counts as "pretty decent" anymore, does he?  He'll be 26 in October, is taking a 40-man spot, and he only had a 108 wRC+ this year in AAA before he got hurt.  I guess Seth ranked him #11 back in May, but that seems too high now.

In the context of the Braves, Palka makes even less sense.  They're obviously covered at 1B (Freeman and Adams), and in the OF (Enciarte, Kemp, and Markakis) at least through 2018.  One of them could be dealt, of course, but the Braves top prospect (Acuna) is also an OF and has already reached AAA.

I'm guessing Palka's stock is trending toward what it was when we acquired him. I could see him being part of a minor deal, or a second or third piece here, but he's not going to be the primary piece that would motivate the Braves to deal Garcia 10 days before the deadline.

I think a Garcia acquisition now could also be an indication of what they plan to do in the offseason.  If we get him now, even though he's a rental, there's probably a decent chance we'd re-sign him (not unlike Pavano, or how people were discussing Santiago a couple months ago).

The Braves move into a brand new sparkling stadium. Expecting to make a splash they trade for Garcia to show their fans and Atlanta they are serious on winning Now they suck. They're getting decent crowds but not sell outs and Cobb County is on the hook for paying off the stadium bonds. So, if this true, the Braves are throwing the towel in, trading a starter for prospect. The loyal Braves fans are ok with this but to the general public, it's meh. Except if you live in Cobb County.

Can you imagine if the Twins had done this the 1st year in Target Field.

Not a bad move by the Twins.  Not exciting and certainly not sexy but a solid move to bolster a weak rotation beyond Santana, Berrios and Meija.  Colon looks to be teetering on retirement, but we'll see.  I wonder if means that the FO has officially moved on from Santiago and Hughes?  And i can't say that i'm not unhappy about that in and of itself.

Ugh, I've been bracing for impact since the rumors started. If it's Brusdar Graterol, I'm gonna be pretty disappointed. He's just about to turn 19, so he's a complete wild card, but he throws in the high 90s. Not the kind of guy the Twins should be flipping. But I guess whoever they're trading away they must not like very much, and Falvey was brought in for his pitching prowess.

Hughes, yes.  He's done for the year and might even call it a career.  As for Santiago, the Twins seem to have some bizarre fantasy that he's still got something left.  I'd take Gibson in a heartbeat over Santiago in every capacity at this point (which says more about my feelings on Santiago than Gibson I might add).

As of 7:14 this morning mlbtraderumors has reported the deal has not been finalized.  May be a medical thing or maybe teams cannot agree on player/players in the deal.
