  • Twins Acquire OF Ryan LaMarre

    Seth Stohs

The Twins announced this morning that they have acquired outfielder Ryan LaMarre from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for cash.

The Twins acquired OF Ryan LaMarre, and based on reports, he is at Target Field. He will take the 40-man roster spot of Michael Pineda and be activated by the Twins.

On Saturday, the Twins lost Pineda to a 60-Game Suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.

Eddie Rosario is nursing a hamstring injury. Max Kepler likely will need time off for his various minor injuries. Jake Cave has missed two games after his Friday night injury. Byron Buxton's shoulder injury. Marwin Gonzalez is out. Outfield depth will be nice to have.

While these guys can and have continued to play in their roles, each could benefit from added rest. If the Twins can find a way to get more rest for them, especially if they are able to clinch early, it would be great heading into the playoffs.

Of course, because he was added to the organization after September 1st, LaMarre is not eligible to be on the Twins playoff roster.

LaMarre spent the 2019 season with Gwinnett, the AAA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. He hit .311/.380/.477 (.857) with 24 doubles, eight triples and nine home runs. He also stole 19 bases and plays well in the outfield, including centerfield.

He was set to be a free agent following the World Series. As you recall, LaMarre's in-laws live in the Twin Cities. Maybe he was around and it worked out well for him and for the Twins.

Interesting that the Twins went this direction rather than calling up a prospect like Brent Rooker who needs to be added to the 40-man roster after the season. Rooker missed the final month-and-a-half of the Triple-A season with a groin injury. He had just begun a rehab assignment with the GCL Twins when that season was cancelled. (Note - I was wrong... Rooker does not need to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason. My apologies. However, you do have to wonder, if he was healthy, if that might have been the move.)

If Molitor had just played Robbie Grossman more I'm sure the FO would kept him on. .

Molitor refused to play Ryan who hit .485 in ST and was red hot. Molly just refused to use him, until he cooled off. Then once cooled off, he didn't play as well, so Molly could justify cutting him loose. Robbie is a different story. Molly liked him. And he was so so for months while the Twins carried him.

Glad Robbie caught on in Oakland, but comparing Robbie's treatment to Ryan's isn't fair

They both got into the game today.
They aren't going to carry someone who will literally not play once.

Look, I said he was depth. Obviously another injury forced their hand (which is why you have depth). But had Kepler not gotten "injured" we may not have seen either one of him, given that we've carried Miller for more than a week without playing him until today.

I imagine history is filled with players on September rosters who never played in a game.

You forget. He was red hot and Molly refused to use him until, after sitting with a hot streak and .485 BA coming out of ST, he cooled off while sitting the bench. Molitor ruined the guys chances.

I haven't forgotten what Lamarre has accomplished prior to and since, Spring Training 2018.

I do not like the move. Kiriloff, Rooker, this move has no upside. I know some of you are ok. I am not. This is reminiscent of past dumpster moves. I am not interested in feel good stories at this point in the season.

No matter how many times you say it, this isn't about a "feel good story". This is about the majority of our outfield being injured. Rooker apparently is also injured (and can only play LF), and apparently they didn't feel that Kiriloff was ready.

(FYI, I see Kepler is going to have an MRI on his shoulder that's been bothering him for a while now. It looks like the OF is falling like the leaves in October.)

Now for Lamarre, I look at him as temporary fill to get a better feel on the impact of all the injuries. Also, Kiriloff is in the playoffs right now and with him not being on the 40 man or need to be, that he will complete that first. It is possible that he could be added to the 40 man and brought up after the Wahoo's playoffs and eventually be on the Twins Oct roster. I think if they are hurting for quality OF's that's what I'd do.

Are you one of the in-laws or something? I don't understand such a strong campaign over Molitor seemingly wrong him.

After Molitor's 2018 post-spring training shenanigans, LaMarre has turned baseball on it's side - one heroic feat after another. Quite possibly, he could be that "missing piece" that propels this team to a title!

Yeah soon as I stand up for him he looks at strike 3 in the ninth with men on.

    Why do I bother?

The Wahoos playoff does not matter to me - only the MLB season.  I guess I am heartless, but whoever had been performing well fills my roster.

The big issue with Rooker, Wiel and Kirriloff is the CF part of the equation. Cave, Buxton, Kepler are our 3 CF and they are also ALL not feeling 100% or even a LOT worse than 100%. Who's next in CF? Rosario, Miller, Lamarre? CF has become a BIG problem. Time to limp into the post season...

    GAHHH!!!

Edit: I forgot to name Wade as possible CF. Should I feel relief now that I added his name to the possible CF's for the remainder of the season and post season?

Fortunately there are still 3 weeks until the postseason.

This is September baseball.  Even on contenders, it's a game of AAAA players. Next year will be a little better, but the up-to-40-man roster is ridiculous.

This has to be LaMarre’s relative, friend or something.

You’re the only person on planet earth still holding a grudge about a career AAA outfielder’s playing time during a 90 loss season in midst of a 100 win season.

You know why Molitor didn’t use LaMarre? Because it’s Ryan freaking Lamarre. Nobody cares. He didn’t “cool off” because Molitor didn’t play him. He’s not good. Lecturing everyone repeatedly about Ryan LeMarre is ridiculous.
