In his 18-year tenure at the Giants helm—the longest of any active general manager—Brian Sabean has witnessed the evolution of the very nature of team building. Sabean has the mindset of a scout but eventually became open to new perspectives, even when they seemed to conflict with a scout’s approach.

Last week, amid concerns that 25-year-old Twins pitching prospect Alex Meyer is too old to still be in the minors, I researched all major league starting pitchers since 1980 who were within an inch of Meyer's towering 6' 9" frame. Turns out their average debut age was 25 years old.

I also found something I didn't expect.

In his rookie season, he experienced a lot of success. He filled the stat sheet in most offensive categories as well as playing great defense and leading the league in outfield assists. However, his free swinging tendencies have made him a strong candidate for regression in 2016. That’s been what has happened to this point, just eight games into the season, but he is immensely talented and has long qualified as a prospect despite some on and off the field issues that he has dealt with.
