With the Twins and Nelson Cruz at a stalemate, Dan Hayes of The Athletic recently reported that the Twins have “checked in on" Kyle Schwarber, Adam Duvall and Michael Brantley. Yet, one of the best free agents available could be an even better fit than the previous three listed.

Twins Daily Nation, we’ve finally made it to the end. We are at the end of this decade, the end of the holiday season, the end of the era where Josh Donaldson isn’t a Minnesota Twin. Although the ship has sailed on first tier-pitching (still sad about Ryu, what about you?), there are still plenty of free agents on the market who can shape the season for Minnesota.

FanCred's Jon Heyman reported Monday that the Twins were in the mix for Nelson Cruz. New Twins beat writer for MLB.com Do-Hyoung Park confirmed and added that there was mutual interest between Cruz and the Twins. Darren Wolfson of KSTP also revealed that the Twins were kicking the tires on Joakim Soria, Trevor Cahill and Wilson Ramos.

So that's four names we've got to dissect, let's get into it.

On Tuesday, the Minnesota Twins organization surprised Joe Mauer by announcing his number seven would be retired. This ceremony will take place in a pre-game ceremony at some point in the coming season. As Kirsten Brown mentioned on Twitter, “7/7 is a home game and a Sunday. Seems like the logical choice to me.”

With Mauer’s number being retired, it’s only natural to think about the next player that could receive the honor. There are some possibilities on the current roster and a couple of prospects might be on the path to greatness.

The Minnesota Twins’ 2018-2019 offseason had been fairly mundane as far as player acquisition goes.

Sure, they said goodbye to Joe Mauer. Hired a shiny new manager. Landed a reclamation project for second base. All well and good. However the Twins had not made a maneuver to inspire the fan base, not sending any kind of signal that they cared about improving more than incrementally in 2019.

On Thursday, they finally gave fans something to talk about by signing 38-year-old Nelson Cruz.
