  • Miranda, Larnach Optioned, Nine More Reassigned to Minor League Camp

    Seth Stohs

Following their 9-4 win over the Pirates at Hammond Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, 11 players found out they will be heading to minor-league camp. Soon several of them will be on a plane to Minnesota to start their Triple-A season with the Saints.

Trevor Larnach and Jose Miranda were both optioned to Triple-A St. Paul today. Nine players were reassigned to minor-league camp. They are pitchers Chi Chi Gonzalez, Ian Hamilton, Trevor Megill, and Juan Minaya, catchers David Banuelos and Caleb Hamilton, infielders Jermaine Palacios and Curtis Terry, and outfielder Derek Fisher

The moves put the Twins' spring training roster at 38 players which means over the next five to six days, they will need to drop ten more players from the roster to get to the 28-man Opening Day roster. Of course, there could be other transactions and Injury List moves in between.

    There are currently 20 pitchers in camp (3 non-roster), three catchers (0 non-roster), eight infielders (2 non-roster), and seven outfielders (2 non-roster).

Jose Miranda was added to the 40-man roster following his incredible 2021 season between Wichita and St. Paul in which he hit .344 with 32 doubles and 30 homers. He hit .231 (.544) during his spring training appearances and made some nice plays at third base.

Trevor Larnach needs to play. Last year, after missing the 2020 season due to the pandemic, he was called up to the Twins during the season's first week. He sure showed glimpses of the immense talent he has, but he went through a prolonged slump that included a ton of strikeouts.

For both Miranda (23) and Larnach (25), they need at-bats. They need repetition. They will both have long big-league careers, but sitting on the bench for the first month instead of playing every day for the Saints just doesn't make sense. Both will be impact players in 2022 and beyond.

No real surprises among the non-roster position players that were reassigned on Wednesday. Both catchers are likely to spend the majority of the season in St. Paul. The question is, will they be joined by Jose Godoy? Jermaine Palacios impressed with his glove, and after a strong 2021 season in Wichita, he should start the 2022 season as the Saints' primary shortstop. Curtis Terry can hit, and at just 25, he will get a lot of at-bats as the Saints first baseman and be prepared if needed.

Again, not a lot of surprise with the non-roster pitchers reassigned either. That said, Juan Minaya was so good with the Twins over the final two months of the season, it is a little surprising he was only able to get a minor-league deal this spring. Hamilton and Megill are young and throw hard. My sense is that both will get time with the Twins during the season. And Chi Chi Gonzalez only joined the Twins the last 7-10 days as a free agent. He will likely make starts and/or work long relief out of the Saints bullpen.

What do you think? The roster is coming together? Any surprises for you? What do you think the final ten moves will be? Leave your COMMENTS below.

If I were the Twins decision maker i would be working to possibly trade guys like Rooker. It's possible (probable?) that they have been. I just don't see a future for him with the Twins. He can be a solid hitter at times but consistency isn't there. Add to that  he has no position to play and is too young to be a DH.

He can't hit for power though. If I had to choose between the two prospects, I'd still tie my horse to Lewis because his ceiling tends to be the type of player harder to replace in free agency. Martin's skillset appears to be Luis Arraez with a handful more HR.

Plus, I don't think this front office would have many qualms about calling up a competent hitter from AA. They've done it with incompetent hitters.

Which has nothing to do with who is in AA vs AAA. Do people really think Lewis is ready for AAA, and Martin is not? Based on what history?

And what has Lewis done at any level above A? That's the part I don't get. Why Lewis would be in AAA, above Martin. And, yes, he was great last year, no power or not.

You may be right, I though Martin was much younger, but he is actually a little older. I'm not sure it really matters where he starts, but I see your point.

I guess I don't really care where they're at as long as nothing is holding them back from being called up to the majors if either are raking at their current level. Celestino got called called up from AA over Keon Broxton and Jimmy Kerrigan in AAA last year.

But maybe they think Lewis needs the push at AAA and Martin needs a chip on his shoulder at AA? Or maybe it's because Lewis is already on the 40-man so he'll likely get the first look if there's an emergency need, and the emergency players now play down the road in St. Paul.

I'd bet good money Martin outhits and out defenses AK in left right now. Put AK at first, and Martin in LF. Trade Sano for a bag of beans if you have to at this point.....because the D is going to be terrible with this alignment.

I agree but I'm willing to wait until May to make that move. Austin Martin could be an All-Star in LF. He's not a SS.

Juan Minaya pitched very well this winter in the Dominican Winter League.  He was the closer for the champions Gigantes.  He blew a couple of games but no one is perfect.  He also pitched for the Gigantes in the Serie del Caribe where his team came in 2nd place losing in the finals to the Colombian team.  I was thinking he had a good chance to make the team.  I am sure he will be in MPLS sometime this summer.  I was able to attend a game that Gilberto Celestino played in.  Celestino did not play for very long this winter for his Dominican team Los Toros del Este.  The game I attended he got 4 walks and and made a Byron Buxton type over his shoulder catch in center field.  It brought the stadium to its feet cheering him.  I only saw him on tv before but when I saw him at the stadium I realized how fast he is.  I got to meet him after the game and he is a very nice and polite man.  I hope he catches on as an utility OF since I don't want anything to happen to Buxton.

I was just thinking that 3 catchers is a reasonable luxury for a 28 man squad but not for 26.  But, when you get down to the nuts and bolts, it's not even as simple as that.

Part of my dilemma is not viewing Sanchez as a catcher. :)

Unfortunately for all of us, he's going to catch.
