Dude, I didn't want Fien on this team and questioned Sano in RF but this post jumped the shark.

 

We're less than FIVE INNINGS INTO THE BASEBALL SEASON.

 

You sound a bit like the guy who was railing on Molitor after two innings. Jesus, reel it in, people. You'll have a damned cornonary by June if this is the attitude we're going to take on the season.

Is it just me, or does Fien have no movement on his fastball?

Listening on the radio, so can anyone let me know if Hicks would've gotten to any of the balls this inning?

No, the first double Sano did a good job cutting it down and keeping it just a double. The second one was crushed to the wall

 

I'm not blaming Sano, but he never should have been moved to RF.

 

The first "double" should have never been a double, and Jones double was played poorly.

 

While I agree they probably should not have moved him, I don't buy that those are not doubles on 90% of all right fielders.

How was any of that on Sano?

Agreed. I guess MAYBE you could say the first hit should have been a single instead of a double, but the 2nd hit would have gotten him the 3rd anyway. If Buxton was in RF he MIGHT have gotten to that Jones double. It hit off the middle of the wall in the deepest part of the park

 

Hicks would have caught the Jones one, or would have come damn close.

Maybe would've came close. Hit the top of the wall, think it would've been difficult for anyone. Think Sano played it just fine.

Fiend is not and has not been a good pitcher. Him getting shelled is just proof of this.

Yeah, Sano didn't do anything wrong there. Only an elite corner guy gets to that ball.

I just said Sano didn't misplay it. 

I hardly paid much attention to these guys in spring training because of my work with golf and watching college basketball, etc.  But it's nice to see Fien still sucks.

That's part of the issue. The Twins could have had an elite OF this year Rosario-Buxton-Hicks.

Where they are the 10% that doesn't let that become a double ( I think the number is closer to 20% but great minds can differ)

 

Instead we  put Sano in RF where he is set up to fail, and we get a catcher back who isn't even playing on opening day.

Good point, it's a great thing these April games don't count as much as those August and September games.

 

Good thing we wasted Tonkin yesterday in a meaningless spring training game, I mean pretty much everyone knew that it was likely that it was going to rain one of these three games in Baltimore.

 

Overall though, I think the best thing that can happen to this team is that the mediocre guys like Nolasco, Fien flame out ASAP so the Twins can cut bait sooner rather than later.

Casey Fien had a 6.43 ERA this spring.

 

That will look a lot better than his ERA after his first relief appearance.

I agree with this, and that was what I was trying to get at--a Rosario-Buxton-Hicks outfield is one of the three best, if not THE best, defensive outfields in baseball.  Even if both of those would have been hits, and even if they would have resulted in the same outcomes, that's not going to be the case throughout the year.  We took an elite strength, and reduced it to maybe a strength.  If JRM can't push Zuke out of the starting spot at some point this year, that's a problem.

Dude, there's no defending making snap judgments five innings into opening day. That's all there is to the conversation.

 

As for your last paragraph, I kinda agree. I didn't want Fien on this team. I don't like the guy and think he's toast.

 

But five innings. Come on.

Out of the jam. Shaky start to say the least from Fien. He probably has a longer leash being a staple in the pen the last 3 years, but a guy can dream that he's the one eventually replaced by the young power arms in AAA right?

Bullpen management was supposed to be better this year.  Off to an ominous start.  Weather.com could have told you that this scenario was possible/likely

 

On radio also, still waiting if the crowd stayed after delay.

They don't hear us radio listeners.....

 

I believe I recall Provus saying a lot of the people left.  Can't say I blame them, given how this was mismanaged.
