  • Game Thread: Twins v Rays, 5/26 @ 7:10pm CT

    Riverbrian

Our Twins return home carrying a four-game winning streak. It was a quick, three-win roadtrip to Baltimore and right back home to face the Rays for a weekend series. That is like the ideal trip to the store. You find a parking spot by the door, you walk in and right there is the grill you came for. You head to the counter to pay for it and you walk past a cooler that you also need, so you grab that. The lines are long but just as you arrive a brand new register light comes on, so you avoid the lines. As the cashier rings up the purchases, you notice that licorice you like in the impulse buy rack, so you grab a bag. After the cashier informs you that all these items were 50% off, you pay and off you go with the whole experience taking 5 minutes.

BTW… that has never happened in my life so I’m not really sure what happened in Baltimore.

Here are some things to think about:

    Twins Video

    1. Grand Marais – In the northeast part of Minnesota, that pointy part, the part that looks like the carrot on the snowman, is the city of Grand Marais. Grand Marais in Ojibwe means, “Stop go back… there is nothing else out there.” According to the brochures… the land surrounding Grand Marais slopes up to form Sawtooth Bluff which is adjacent to Pincushion Mountain. It’s not really a mountain… it’s really a very large pincushion named Mountain. There are actual pins stuck in Pinchushion Mountain so it is functional, you can’t see them… because they are actual size.

    2. Our Twins – We have a fairly warm team offensively of recent days. In the last seven, we have nine players with an OBP over .370. The bullpen had a real nice week and we got some good starts out of Santana and Berrios. Add all that up and we are going to the World Series!!!

    3. The Rays – Sitting at .500 currently, these guys can play a little. The rotation is productive from 1 to 5 and not one of them has an ERA over 3.82. The bullpen hasn’t been leaking either. On offense they've got a couple of guys playing above normal with Corey Dickerson and Logan Morrison acting like all-stars. If you are Scandinavian... you can hit for the Rays just like sons of Dicker and Morris.

    4. Today’s Joe M Conversation

Montana: Hey, Joe… that hole you're digging is getting kinda deep there.

McCarthy: I’m planting a couple of bushes. I’m gonna call them George and Jeb

Maddon: Why not Randy or Matt?

McCarthy: Get your own bushes and name them what you want.

Maddon: I already have a Randy Bush.

Montana: That’s seriously a deep hole. You are gonna come out the other side.

Mauer: I read somewhere… if you did that… You’d come out in the Indian Ocean.

Montana: The Indian Ocean? That will probably end up flooding the backyard… I’d stop, Joe.

Maddon: It’s impossible to dig a hole through the entire earth. The core is hot… around 9,000 degrees.

Montana: You’ll need a special suit or something.

Mauer: I’ll get the tin foil.

    5. Psycho – I’m not normal but nobody ever accused me of being psycho. However, every path I’ve walked down in my life is now called the Psycho Path.

For whatever flaws Rosario and Buxton have shown at the plate, you really can't beat having their defense gobbling up those shots to the gap.

Yeah but we should be able to expect a hit every once in an olympics (in buxtons case)

I'm so confused. I get home, turn the game on and Matty B. gives up a HR on the first pitch I see.

Yet Richard keeps talking about how well he's pitched this year and how his stats are deceiving. I just don't get it.

Wondering if Sousa would trade his home run for the chance to erase his highlight reel whiff from the baseball archives.

I'm guessing if he thought he'd get another crack at Belisle in this series he probably would.

His ERA is a hefty 7.80, but his xFIP is a comparatively svelte 5.89.  So Politifact rates this Dickensian fact

    , and yet utterly meaningless.

I'm watching the Rays broadcast and they're loving every minute of that dive.  Apparently he's a goofball and his kooky antics are a big hit.  To be honest, I kinda liked that dive too!

It was so bad that even he had to laugh at it. It sounds like he might be the kind of guy who'd rather see a silly highlight of himself after he retires than none at all, which is the way I'd want to think of if something like that happened to me.

Come to think of it, something like that does happen to me, usually at least once a week, just not on a baseball field.
