  • Celestino, Beckham Sent to Minor-League Camp

    Seth Stohs

We are just one week from Opening Day. The roster cuts continue as the Twins sent two more players to minor-league camp on Wednesday morning.

The Twins announced this morning that outfielder Gilberto Celestino has been optioned to Triple-A St. Paul. In addition, utility man Tim Beckham was reassigned to minor-league spring training.

The roster is now down to 36 players, eight above the 28-man Opening Day roster. There are still 20 pitchers (3 non-roster), three catchers (no non-roster), seven infielders (1 non-roster), and six outfielders (2 non-roster).

With Celestino the day after Trevor Larnach, the team's Opening Day outfield appears to be coming into focus. The starters are likely to be Alex Kirilloff, Byron Buxton and Max Kepler with Brent Rooker and Nick Gordon coming off the bench. The two non-roster outfielders remaining on the spring roster are Jake Cave and Kyle Garlick. It's hard to imagine the team adding non-roster players for the 27th and 28th roster spots. Those will only be available for the first three weeks of the season.

With Beckham sent down, the infield comes closer to the Opening Day roster. Miguel Sano, Jorge Polanco, Carlos Correa, Gio Urshela, Luis Arraez, with Nick Gordon being able to play around field too. The one non-roster infielder is Daniel Robertson.

The Twins will have to drop five or six pitchers to get down to their 28-man Opening Day roster (depending on if they use 14 or 15 pitchers).

    PICK YOUR ROSTER

OK, just as a fun exercise, here are the 36 players remaining on the Twins spring roster. Which 28 will you send down? (My prediction is in the comments below.)

    • Catchers: Ryan Jeffers, Jose Godoy, Gary Sanchez
    • Infielders: Miguel Sano, Jorge Polanco, Carlos Correa, Gio Urshela, Luis Arraez, Nick Gordon, Daniel Roberton (NRI)
    • Outfielders: Brent Rooker, Alex Kirilloff, Byron Buxton, Max Kepler, Jake Cave (NRI), Kyle Garlick (NRI)
    • Pitchers: Sonny Gray, Bailey Ober, Joe Ryan, Dylan Bundy, Chris Archer, Taylor Rogers, Tyler Duffey, Caleb Thielbar, Jorge Alcala, Jharel Cotton, Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, Joe Smith, Cody Stashak, Jovani Moran, Jhon Romero,,Josh Winder, Danny Coulombe (NRI), Jake Faria (NRI), Devin Smeltzer (NRI)

You can go 13 hitters and 15 pitchers or 14 hitters and 14 pitchers. Leave your thoughts, rosters or final cuts in the COMMENTS below.

That's Miguel Sano. A bat who can't play defense worth a damn.

Replacing Sano at 1B with ANYONE ELSE (Arraez, Urshela, Kirilloff, Sanchez, etc) is like adding a gold glover to the defense. What's the point of having a platinum glove shortstop with Sir Clanks-A-Lot playing first base?

I was going to say Sano isn't THAT bad defensively but then I looked at his defensive metrics from last year. He is second to last in MLB in 2021 among first basemen with negative 6 outs above average. Max Muncy is at plus 7, so if you put Kiriloff at 1b every day, theoretically you're gaining about 10 runs over the course of the season. Kirilloff was at plus 2 but fewer opportunities obviously.

Sure looks like 3 Catchers is the plan.

Unless you have a Cruz type talent... I'd prefer the DH spot be spread around to get some AB's to the entire roster.

It sure looks like we will be disappointed because Garcia is most likely not Cruz and I worry that Godoy will be under utilized and therefore a waste of a spot.

I'm with you when it comes to my level of disappointment.

My wife wanted to go out for dinner and I said "Sure... Wherever You'd like to go". I didn't really have a preference but I didn't feel like Chinese Food at that moment.

She chose the China Garden... and that was a comparable disappointment.  I had the Cantonese Beef Chow Mein and now I'm getting 3 catchers.

Okay ... first off ... Garcia? You mean Sanchez?

Second off, it is not a comparable disappointment at all. You had a say and you had a choice, you didn't speak up. We literally have no say in what the Twins FO does and the roster choices they make. None. We can express our thoughts here, we can be disappointed, irate even, or shrug and say 'Out of my control so whatever' ... our choice is whether or not we choose to continue watching or following ... but we have absolutely no control over whether or not there will be 3 catchers on the team. Where you go to dinner, you have a say, you have a choice. It's just not the same. Maybe it's still disappointment, but you could have altered that outcome, so it's not comparable. And now we are off the beaten trail again.

But, back to where this started ... I agree ... we don't need 3 catchers on the roster. Others have a different opinion on that assessment. But I'll sigh with resignation because it is what it is because I have absolutely no control over it.

Kinda surprised that it would be necessary to be this specific to try express my level of my disappointment... but OK.

Since November, I've got a plastic bag that has gotten stuck very high up in a tree in my yard. When it's windy... it's makes this flapping sound that makes me look up at the bag and it disappointments me. I have no control over the wind that put it there  and or the wind that makes it rustle. And there isn't really anything I can do to get it down.

I'm going to continue watching the Twins and I'm not going to sell my house.

    Better?

    Yeah I meant Sanchez.

Heh ... not really ... I still don't get the comparison other than there was disappointment involved, but we'll leave it at that and just say 'No' to 3 catchers

There are degrees to how disappointed a given individual is over individual circumstances. The degree of disappointment can be similiar regardless of having control or no control over the circumstance.

    On a scale of 1 to 10

Having Chinese Food when I didn't feel like it... is about a 2,

The plastic bag in my tree... is about a 2

The Twins carrying three catchers... is about a 2.

I'll sleep OK tonight but I am open to suggestion on how I can get that plastic bag down.

Players will be called up and players will be sent down. Come May things will be different. This is how the season begins with an opening day roster.

    1. Drive to Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Husqvarna Outlet Store, or similar establishment.

    2. Purchase appropriately sized chain saw.

    3. Drive home.

    4. NOW THIS PART IS VERY IMPORTANT...read instruction manual cover to cover. Maybe read safety parts a second time.

    5. Cut down tree. Avoid standing on the downwind side as you're doing this.

    6. Remove plastic bag.

    7. Recycle said bag.

    You're welcome.

This is the type of solid practical advice that can only be found on Twinsdaily.

How many pages is the instruction manual?

Chief, now you know full well as a man and veteran you cannot openly tell someone to actually read the directions.

I feel like I don't even know you anymore. ?

Brian is right about one thing for sure, who is on the Opening Day roster or lineup isn’t really that important in the larger scheme of things.

Quickly now (no cheating!), who was the Opening Day left fielder last year? Who remembers that Ryan LaMarre was on the Opening Day roster in 2019 or Aaron Whitefield in 2020?

For those of you who have forgotten, Luis Arraez was the starting left fielder, although he didn’t play left a single inning in that game.
