  • BREAKING: Twins Acquire Garcia From Braves

    Parker Hageman

The Minnesota Twins finally got their man.

After being on the precipice of a deal with the Atlanta Braves for left-handed starter Jaime Garcia last week, only to have the deal fall apart based on the medical reports of Twins prospect Nick Burdi, the two sides have agreed on a trade: In exchange for hard-throwing prospect Huascar Ynoa the Twins will receive Garcia as well as catcher Anthony Recker.

Despite the 4-7 record and 4.30 ERA, Garcia was having a decent season for the Braves. With a ground ball rate over 50%, Garcia has shown the ability to keep the ball in the park this season (especially compared to 2016) but his walk rate is the highest it has been since his 2010 campaign with the Cardinals. In many regards he is a superior version of Hector Santiago. He represents a definite upgrade at the backend of the rotation – replacing either Kyle Gibson, Aldaberto Mejia or Bartolo Colon.

Garcia is coming off one of his better starts of the season against the sizzling Los Angeles Dodgers, holding them to three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. According to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the performance increased his stock and reportedly up to six teams were interested in the veteran.

The Twins also get back another catcher, the 33-year-old Recker, who had been playing in AAA Gwinnett. While Recker displayed power in his younger minor league days, he has transformed into a light-hitting backstop after stops in the Oakland and Mets organization. To make room for Recker on the 40-man roster, the Twins will send Rule 5 draft right-handed Justin Haley back to the Red Sox organization.

Going east is teenage right-hander Ynoa who signed out of the Dominican in 2014 for $800,000. As a 15-year-old, Ynoa was throwing 91 but over the last few years, that velocity has more or less stayed the same. He can reach into the mid-90s but has been sitting in the lower 90s. Consistency has also been a problem. In 25.2 innings with Elizabethton, he has compiled a 5.26 ERA with a 23/14 K/BB ratio in six starts.

According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Twins will pay approximately $4.8 million of Garcia's remaining salary while the Braves will cover the $100,000 remaining on Recker.

Corresponding roster moves will be announced after tonight's game against the Dodgers.

The Twins are more than one backend starting pitcher away from contending for a playoff spot in 2017, mathematically speaking the Twins have a little over 10% chance of making the playoffs and about a 3% chance of winning the division.

Granted Ynoa is not Romero, Gonsalves, etc at this point but yes he is a recently turned 19 year old and is in short season A ball, he also has all the talent to stay a starter.  He signed for 800K as a 16 year old, if you want a translation or conversion think of it as a draft pick, you'd trade your 2nd round pick in the draft for 2 months of Jaime Garcia? Personally, I wouldn't.

Well, these are the Twins last 10 2nd round picks: Rotvedt, Burdi, Eades, Melatokis, Chargois, Boer, Goodrum, Bullock, Landendorf, Rams.

Based upon that track record, I'm ok giving up a 2nd round pick for a guy who is actually a major league pitcher, with an actual track record. The jury is still out on a few of these recent guys, but they are mostly washed out or injured at this point.

But would you trade your 2018 2nd round pick for him?  So wish baseball allowed draft pick trades ahead of time.

On that note.  Do you know why the MLB doesn't allow teams to trade their picks?

Is anyone else concerned about Garcia's transition from the NL to the AL? Perhaps I'm still reeling from the Nolasco fiasco, but Garcia looks to me like no better than a 3/4 in the NL every year except 2015, and I'm concerned that it makes him a 4/5 in the AL, which isn't all that much to get excited about.

Also, please tell me I'm not the first person to come up with Nolasco fiasco.

Well, comparing it to a second round pick is stupid.  They spent $800K on a 15 year old who threw 91mph.  There is no comparison to the draft because you can't draft a guy that young.

They have had 2.5 years to see this guy up close and personal.  Maybe the Twins now view him as a 5th round talent or a 10th round talent.

Do you really want a front office who holds onto a guy "just" because they spent $800K to sign him 3 years ago, even if they don't view him as a high end prospect anymore?

My guess is that he's AAA insurance for a Garver callup. There is an outside chance the Twins are putting together another trade that involves Garver but I'd be surprised if that happened.

Good move. I was a bit concerned when it was mentioned that the Twins were going to give up a "good" prospect, but Ynoa is just a lottery ticket, I'm perfectly fine with giving up a guy like him.

Acquiring Recker seems superfluous, but hopefully it foreshadows Garver arriving in the majors. I sure hope so.

Garcia should be an improvement as the #4 guy in the rotation, though he may have trouble with the NL to AL jump. He'll at least be better than Colon.

Ynoa was my midseason #20 Twins prospect (http://twinsdaily.com/articles.html/_/minnesota-twins-news/minnesota-twins-minor-leagues/part-3-seths-midseason-top-40-prospects-16-20-r5644)...

I think he's got a pretty high ceiling, but it's the kind of deal that makes sense for a rental. Atlanta gets a high upside guy who is probably 4-5 years away. The Twins get a guy who should help them this year.

Recker only makes sense to me if Garver comes up to be the #3 catcher, #2 first baseman, #3 DH, #1 pinch hitter, #5 OF.

Don't compare him to Nolasco.  If they sign him to a contract extension in the offseason, then you can compare him to Nolasco.

You're getting him for basically nothing.  I bet the percentage of guys who fit the mold of Ynoa making the majors is less than 5%.

The Braves are certainly looking for upside. Ynoa is a long way from the majors. This is his third season and he has a few starts in a shaky Elizabethton season. He will need to be put on the 40 man roster or be exposed to rule 5 after 2 more seasons. It is hard to imagine that he will have much experience above A-Ball by that time.

Adding a catcher in AAA clears a spot for Garver to be a third catcher/bench bat. They need someone that can hit a lefty and he may have more value to the bench than Granite once Buxton returns. I don't know how they find a roster sport for either without going to 12 pitchers though.

I suppose the other possibility is the Twins are in talks about moving Murphy or Garvin for a reliever.

I liked it better when it was Burdi, and I'm not a huge fan of paying for a rental when you're such a long shot to make the playoffs. But, all that said, if I have to live with trading for a league average rental, this seems like a fair enough price to do so.

The part I love about sports is that we eventually get to see the results, and that is fun.

Will be fun to see if this move helps us win a division, and if not, if losing Ynoa comes back to haunt us.

Correct me if I am wrong, if they DFA Gimenez, he has to pass waivers before he can get offered a seat at AAA.  My guess is that he would not pass and if he did, he would not accept a deal at AAA.  Meaning, he is gone.  This could mean that adding Anthony Recker is a lot like putting CG at AAA.  They can then call up Garver which improves the lineup, and insert Garcia which improves the pitching starters.  If they do this and add a quality reliever, then this is pretty good.

Not sure why people think there's demand for Gimenez: either that he'd fail to clear waivers or that they could trade him for anything (unless by "anything" you mean comparable to the Danny Santana trade). He signed on a minor league contract and has a career avg below Drew Butera.

Gimenez is a fun character, but he'll be expendable if/when the team wants a different backup catcher.

The Twins aren't going to win this year, but I suppose they needed to make a statement to the fans. This one is OK, I suppose. They likely felt compelled to do something. Better than the terrible trade away of Chi Wei Hu. I fear this will be an excuse to enable the Twins to not call up a younger prospect to get his feet wet. I suspect Recker was a clearing move to help the Braves.

Recker is just there as minor league catching insurance and can fill in when Garver is called up. taking him is just additional financial incentive to the Braves to entice them to make the deal, Doesn't seem like the Braves got much, Were the other teams looking for the Braves to subsidize salary??Perhaps Gimenez and Recker are bound for a revamped bullpen?

I am just happy at the thought of him being gone.  He seems like a good dude but we can upgrade the lineup.

To save owners from themselves or at least that is the only rationale I can come up with.  Once MLB let's draft pick trades happen there will be clubs that trade a full season of draft picks for current MLB talent.

Only positive of this trade, my twitter and youtube page getting action with all the video I've taken of Ynoa over the years.

Recker and Gimenez crossed paths with the Indians last year.

Last May the Indians had Recker in AAA and were in need of a catcher for the major league roster with the injury to Perez. Instead of calling up Recker, they reacquired Gimenez from the Rangers on May 4. On May 9 Recker was sent to the Braves for cash.

    From "Let's Go Tribe"

The Cleveland Indians have traded minor-league catcher Anthony Recker to the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations, the team confirmed through Twitter. Recker was signed to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training prior to the season, but he became expendable when the Tribe traded for Chris Gimenez following Roberto Perez's thumb injury.

It will also give the player and the agent a lot of leverage to demand where they want to be. The elite HS kids would be demanding to go to their desired markets.

Looks like a good deal to me.  Could bite some in 4-5 years, but sometimes you have to sell the base.

I think the same thing was said about that Kevin Jepsen deal a couple of years ago and now Hu is on the 40 man roster for Tampa and part of their future.

Hu was doing very well as a starter in A+; Ynoa is not doing well in Rookie ball. If everything goes right for Ynoa over the next few years, he could be 2015 Hu in 2019. He could also be worse.

    Garcia > Jepsen.
