    Trade Deadline Deals

The next few weeks are shaping up to quite possibly being the craziest trade deadline in franchise history. Minnesota was supposed to be a contending team and many players are on contracts that expire in the next two years. This means the Twins are open for business with names up for grabs like Nelson Cruz, Josh Donaldson, Jose Berrios, and Taylor Rogers.

Some national outlets have identified the Twins as having the highest quantity of players available and quite possibly some of the best players on the market. Berrios is the team’s most valuable trade target as he has one more year of team control. Nearly every player will be available and some players with multiple years of team control might end up being dealt like Kenta Maeda or Max Kepler.

    Play the Young Guns

Alex Kirilloff and Trevor Larnach have been inserted into the everyday line-up with better-than-expected results. While other team’s top prospects have struggled, Minnesota’s dynamic duo has put up better than average offensive numbers as part of one of the better offenses in the American League. Both players are part of the long-term plan so they will continue to get plenty of opportunities, but they aren’t the only rookies to keep an eye on.

Next year’s Twins starting rotation has plenty of openings and the club needs to see what they have in some of their young arms. Bailey Ober has made eight starts with some mixed results. Other pitching prospects like Josh Winder and Jordan Balazovic have a chance to make the debuts in the second half. On the position player side, Jose Miranda and Brent Rooker have been hitting well in the upper levels of the minors. Both players can be inserted into the everyday line-up if Donaldson and Cruz are dealt.

    Division Spoiler

Minnesota has won back-to-back division titles and was expected to be in contention for a third, but now the Twins can play spoiler to the other contenders. Chicago has jumped out to an eight-game lead in the division even with injuries to multiple key players. Cleveland is the lone team in striking distance, but both Cleveland and Chicago have plenty of games remaining against the teams at the bottom of the division.

The AL Central is clearly Chicago’s division to lose at this point. Cleveland has flaws and there are no guarantees they will be able to go out and fix those flaws at the trade deadline. So far this season, Minnesota hasn’t put up much of a fight against Chicago as the Twins have only managed two wins in 10 opportunities. This was supposed to be a two-team battle until the end of the year, but the Twins haven’t lived up to their end of the bargain. This doesn’t mean they can’t be a thorn in Chicago’s side during the second half.

    1. Young arms interest me the most.  Who will they bring up?
    2. Will they bring Cave back?   I hope not I like Gordon on the team.
    3. Do we see Astudillo again?
    4. Will Buxton play for us again this season?
    5. Can we extend Berrios?
    6. Is there a real SS available after Simmons leaves?  Not a fill in, a real SS.
    7. Can Celestino develop quickly enough to keep CF?

Cleveland isn't looking too good. The Twins are just 7 games back of the Tribe. Could the Twins claw their way back to .500 by the end of the season and catch the Indians for 2nd place? I doubt it, but that would at least be fun to track. Sadly, even if this team catches fire and finishes with a .500 record, it's going to be remembered as a colossal failure nonetheless.

I'm most interested in seeing some rookie pitching. Actually, any new pitching. Ian Hamilton should be in the bullpen ASAP. Can we get this Barnes kid up? Will Balazovich get a start or two at the end of the year? I really hate how teams meddle with service time, because it means we often don't get to see the highest ranked prospects until next May. What kind of bizarro world is that? The BEST prospects get held back!

    I will:

    1. Appreciate every Cruz PA while he's a Twin.
    2. Enjoy watching Buxton play again, no matter how many or few games.
    3. Follow the young OF, Kirilloff and Larnach, as they continue to improve.
    4. Hope Gordon can develop into a solid MI/CF. I'm pulling for the young man after what he went through the past two years.
    5. Monitor the trade wire for an answer to the big question... retool or rebuild?
    6. Be surprised if Balazovic pitches for the Twins in 2021.

    Thabks Cody,

I hope you have a storyline option after the season is concluded  ,,,

I will be watching the front office very carefully on the trade deadline ,

They have not really impressed me with trades yet ..

Always like to see rookies  perform and hopefully perform well  ...

Spoilers would be nice , but probably to much to ask for as Rocco always gets out managed by the opposition  ...

How Kepler, Sano, Polanco finsh and how Buxton and Garver recover.  This was the core.  Can Polanco sustain his mid-season rebound, can Kepler show his recent streak is a sign that his struggles were from health/Covid, and how do Buxton and Garver look for 7 weeks or so.  To me I let those items play out in 2021 before deciding on a complete rebuild.

    Trade deadline.

pitchers coming up from teh minors (THE KEY for me for the future and where they think next year is)

    Possible extensions

Kepler, Garver, Polanco, and younger hitters on the roster

I don't care about spoilers at all. I'd like the Sox to win the division, and for their fans to be able to rub it in the Cubs' fans noses, frankly.

    Story-lines for the 2nd half?

    1. How many hits does Sano get to right?

    2. What will Sano's walks to SO's look like after the All-Star break?

    3. How many hits will Kepler get to left?

    4. Will Polanco start hitting Doubles again?
