  1. I'm sure Boras isn't the type of person who would use a small market team like the twins to extort more money from a super-rich large market team

  2. I am so tired of commenting on articles and stories like this. The Twins didn't sign anybody, so they have no focus, no direction, the FO sucks, torch the owner... 1) Stop assuming efforts aren't made. 2) Stop assuming the Twins aren't willing to spend money on a particular player. 3) Stop assuming they should be in on every FA on the market 4) Stop assuming every FA wants to come to MN The Twins have a boatload of talent coming off of injuries, they upgraded at catcher, got a placeholder replacement for Correa, made the decision to go with MIranda at 3B, and picked up another viable piece in the OF. Stop saying there is no plan. Stop saying everyone is dumb or cheap. Just say you don't agree with the plan currently being taken.

  3. With the calendar reading 2023, it’s hard not to think of spring training. And with a free agent class essentially picked clean and the trade rumors silent, it’s hard not to wonder who, exactly, is going to be on the Minnesota Twins come April. At least one source has run the numbers and is startled at the findings. “Usually, I base these outlooks on the current roster, the farm system, free agents, the needs of other teams, and payroll,” said Aaron Gleeman, The Athletic’s Minnesota Twins correspondent and world record holder for most takeout duck sauce packets in one refrigerator (354). “The thing is, what always comes back is a major league roster. This time…” Gleeman’s voice trailed off. “Here, I’ll open the spreadsheet.” Rather than columns of names, positions, ages, and salaries, the screen cut to black, a black as eternal and smothering as a starless winter night. From the laptop speakers came what at first sounded like a low moan. It soon escalated into a mournful, broken howl. The sound, not quite human, not quite animal, made clear it was no stranger to the depths of sorrow. After 25-30 seconds, the sound ended. A picture of former Twin Chuck Knoblauch getting pelted with hot dogs at the Metrodome appeared, and Twins radio broadcaster Dan Gladden said, “This roster projection brought to you by Minnesota Rusco, since 1965.” “I can’t explain any of this,” said Gleeman. “I mean, I’m as skeptical of the state of the roster right now as anyone, but I just kinda figured it would come back with Michael Wacha and Elvis Andrus or something, you know? The machine doesn’t usually do this.” Fellow beat writers and columnists report similar troubling results. “I had to file my first spring training preview for Sunday’s paper,” said the Star Tribune’s Phil Miller. “I sent it to my editors, and they said, ‘Ha ha, very funny.’ I asked them to clarify, and they said ‘This is the Book of Revelations, Phil.’ I checked the original document, and sure enough. Nothing about what I wrote on Royce Lewis, but a whole sidebar regarding pestilence.” “I heard about Aaron’s issue so figured I’d just take a look at my own files,” said Betsy Helfand of the Pioneer Press. “All my notes are there, but they’re in Latin. The letters are blood red. I don’t know any Latin, and Alden Global Capital (the hedge fund that owns the Pioneer Press) doesn’t give us laptops that display color.” The Twins open their spring training schedule on Saturday, February 25th.

  7. Haven't heard anything in hours. This isn't surprising, as we all know Carlos Correa only signs contracts between midnight and 4am.

  8. I know lots of us had high hopes for him, but at this point, Enlow seems likely to be one of those guys who will end up getting claimed and DFA’d multiple times.
    6 points
  9. If I'm a terrible team, I 100% take a chance on Enlow on the 40 man. Why not?
    6 points
  10. It will be interesting to see how this plays. At first blush, he looks like Pagan 2–has the right analytics but hasn’t performed up to expectations. I am not sure what to make of the Enlow situation, whether they know something about his potential we don’t, or they think they can sneak him through. Now if reports are correct and they are closing in on Correa, maybe they plan an all in strategy for this year. But, would you count on Ortega and Pagan in your “all in” bullpen? We live in interesting times.
    6 points
  11. I guess I thought the odd man out was going to be Sands and his 5.47 ERA but they must feel Enlow has the best chance to make it through. If you look at MLB.com Enlow looks like he has more polished pitches but I guess if the Twins are looking for a young power bullpen arm this move makes some sense. I don't love it when relievers have such high WHIP's but maybe they can teach him a slider or help him find the zone more. I do love having another high octane arm to work with and hopefully this is a move that works out. For anyone interested Ortega was the Angels 16th best prospect in 2021 not that the Angels have a top farm but he has been good in the minors. This also shows how hard it is for teams to carry arms that are not quite ready yet. Enlow was more than likely dead weight this season for sure but I think he might end up being the better pitcher in the end. Will have to wait and see how this one turns out.
    6 points
  12. Enlow likely gone. I'm baffled. They have others that have almost no upside on the f forty man. Also, imo, this shows they think they can win this year and makes me believe even more they aren't trading Kepler unless blown away.

  13. Wait a sec. Is it possible that the information that we read about is purposely released and possibly used as manipulation? If so... If we then take this information and then draw conclusions based upon it. Is it possible that we have been manipulated? If so... is it possible that Wheaties is only claiming to be the "Breakfast of Champions" because they want us to think that? Is it possible that All State wants us to believe that we are in Good Hands? Are we being manipulated? If any of this is true? I might have to think about what is making me angry and how my anger is just feeding the manipulation machine? Insert ? Smiley Face Here

  14. Boras and Correa want the best deal period. I do think Correa would prefer being in a big market (Dior anyone?). I also believe Cohen wants him, The issue is the years and insurance, and my belief that as rich as Cohen is, he is tapped out on Salary for the next couple years. If clauses have the potential to wipe out the last 4-5 years of the deal, this is really a 200 million offer. At that point a higher AAV deal with shorter amount of years makes sense and I think the Twins would play in that playground. Odds are both sides give a little and Correa officially becomes a Met, however I am ready for the next chapter of this Soap opera.

  17. If the Twins sign Correa, these are the options: They're a blind squirrel that somehow always manages to find the nut They have a very specific crystal ball that only shows them the near future of Carlos Correa (and maybe Laverne & Shirley re-runs) There is no third option.

  18. They are on the road leading from a previous core that just was not nearly good enough. They jettisoned most of them and are basically left with Buxton and Polanco. The entire rest of the team are guys with less than 2 years of service time. That road might go nowhere. It might also lead to a solid rotation of Ryan / Varland / SWR and Ober all inexpensive and under teams control for several years. That scenario leaves lots of money to add another top of the rotation SP through free agency. Prielipp and Festa might just provide incredible depth. The position players might all bust. It might also lead to Kirilloff and Miranda being well above average and maybe even some all-star years between them. Lewis and Lee might bust but probably not. Those two have higher upsides than Kirilloff and Miranda. Gordon and Martin might be mediocre but they could very well be an outstand duo as super utility players. Larnach and Wallner might bust or be 40 HR guys and Rodriquez might just be a superstar. They on the same road Chicago was on not so long ago which is the same road every team travels with the exception of ultra-high revenue teams. This road could lead to nowhere, but I like the odds of it leading somewhere pretty good and this time the trip has a good chance of remaining somewhere good for quite a few years.

  19. I really don't understand your argument.....they shouldn't sign an elite player because everyone else was hurt last year and they didn't win? Like, then, don't sign any FA? What is your argument? How else would you like them so spend the money this year, given NO ONE is left in FA? What are you arguing?

Caller #1: Hey, TD, I saw Carlos in Atlanta with his family. TD: The one in Georgia? Caller #1: Oh, yeah. TD: Really? Did he look happy? Caller #1: Yeah. I guess so. TD: [ upset ] Good. Good for him, that’s great. Seriously, that’s really, really good. I can’t tell you how happy I am for him. Caller: Okay, man, see you later. [ hangs up ] TD: Okay, good. He deserves to be happy. I’m glad, I really am. [ changing the subject ] Alright, now’s the time in the show when I like to give Carlos a call and hang up on him. [ dials phone, it rings twice ] Carlos on phone: Hello? [ TD hangs up sadistically ] TD: That was great! Now, let’s bring out my first guest. He lives down the street from me, and has known Carlos since kindergarten, Daryl Fitzsimmons [ Daryl greets us, then sits down ]. Hey, uh, Daryl, don’t you think Carlos and the Twins made a good couple? Daryl Fitzsimmons: [ reflecting ] Yeah.. definitely. TD: I know. What’s with him? Daryl Fitzsimmons: [ continuing to reflect ] I don’t know, man. TD: Okay, thanks for coming by, Daryl. Daryl Fitzsimmons: Thanks! [ leaves the set ] TD: Okay, uh, let’s move on to this week’s Carlos Trivia Question. The question is: Last summer when Carlos took his niece to Chuck E. Cheese, how long did Carlos say we’d be together? The answer is: Forever. Hmm.. I guess in Chuck E. Cheese, Forever means Eight Months. [ upset ] I can’t believe he did this to us! It’s not fair. What did I do wrong, Carlos? Just tell me, and I’ll stop doing it! Tonight, we have a brand new segment for our show. Let’s call up the guy I heard Carlos has been negotiating with, and hang up on him. [ dials phone, it rings twice ] Steve Cohen on phone: Hello. Hello? Hello?? TD: [ sadistically ] I’m gonna kill you. Cohen: [ angry ] Who is this?? TD: [ hangs up quickly ] Okay! That really was fun. Now, every week on the show, I like to take out an old quote Carlos said to me, and sigh painfully as I read it. This one was from the All Star Break. [ He reads note, sighs painfully, reads, sighs painfully, reads, sighs. ] Okay. Now is the part of the show where I look at Carlos' picture, and I talk to it. [ Picks up Carlos' picture, stares at it ] Why? Why do you push me away when all I want to do is love you? Take me back, Carlos, please..

  22. I think this offseason has been embarrassing for our front office. The Twins need to find success through development. Even if we got Correa look at the AL East and big market players. The strategy needs to be developing players and stocking the farm. Instead this front office has created a team that can't win an awful division while managing to deplete the farm system. Sorry guys but it's time to rebuild, restock, and move on. I will say the team has a competitive rotation. But there's still no ace to win a postseason game. Correa doesn't solve it...just like he didn't last year.

  25. I haven't bashed them for letting him get away, but have bashed them for not knowing 285 wasn't enough to get him and missing on other guys while waiting for a deal they should know wasn't good enough. Them blindly, yes, blindly, falling into a 2nd Correa deal wouldn't change my mind on that, and I'd absolutely not change my tune on the offseason to this point or apologize. If he ends up here, it's not because the Twins were so smart to know that the Giants and Mets would both pass on deals significantly better than theirs. They simply would've lucked into it and that's not worthy of praise.

  27. Well two of the last three off seasons, in early December the Twins walked into their offices, which were fully ablaze and surrounded by an angry mob. They then exited the offices the following calendar year, somehow unscathed and holding a baby dragon as a shocking new prize.

  30. This is simply wrong. Perhaps it would be better to say that "The Twins continue to follow a path I don't like." Or maybe "The Twins continue to follow a path that doesn't involve throwing silly money at every shiny free agent." The Twins' path will lead to a decent team on the field that, if luck goes right, will be competitive in their division. The Twins' path will lead to a team that doesn't lose tens of millions of dollars for their owners, who are not in this for charity. The Twins' team will have some good players, some interesting players, and some players that don't perform up to the standard we would like. This is what we sign up for when we become Twins fans. I'll be watching and cheering with interest this summer as long as the players are putting in the effort and as long as there are some players I find interesting to watch. (I don't find strikeout kings like Joey Gallo interesting to watch, so to that part of the path has disappointed me.) Too many writers on this site seem to think that the Twins are something that they are not, and that there are no constraints (monetary, willing trading partners, or player interest in joining) that might stand in the way of signing everyone on the all-star team. They are one of 30 teams all trying to get better. They are not one of the richest (or poorest). They are probably not the best-run, but not the worst-run. They have successes in player development and recruitment, and they have failures. My season will be full of cheering, always hoping, sometimes regretting, and sometimes celebrating, but very little criticizing. It's better that way!

  32. Certainly not the reliever I had hoped they would get. And still hope for. Let's cross our fingers that Enlow will clear waivers and remain with the organization. Still believe he could make it. Gotta believe it is good that when looking at the 40-man someone with as much potential as Enlow has to be the one cut loose when adding someone.

  35. One-year deals are an admission of fault. Either the market lacked quality, all trade routes fell through, or the internal options were so hideous that the team felt it necessary to promise a player pay for just a single year of their time. For the athlete, a one-year-deal represents one of two things: an opportunity to bounce back from a dreadful season, perhaps re-inflating one’s value before hitting the free market with a prettier sheen, or an acceptance of age, an understanding that father time’s inevitable march will render your talents useless. No team wants to lose out in a nebulous contract musical chairs, so the player Nelson Cruz’s it and agrees to one-year pacts before slithering away into retirement. Or he’ll sign with Pittsburgh. Teams love diving into these waters. If the contract busts, they don’t have to be the poor souls legally stuck to an albatross, and their job security only takes the slightest hit. It was a good bet, after all. If the deal works, they look like genius, clairvoyant decision-makers who can reap the benefits of a productive player while raking in compliments. In a land where Xander Bogaerts signs for 11 years, that’s a reasonable pool to visit. There’s an emptiness to these deals, though. While professional sports is a business, we like to create connections with players, perhaps fooling ourselves into ignoring the massive amounts of money that exchange hands to allow their athletic ability to shine. When Max Kepler mans right field for the millionth time in a Twins uniform, our shared experience builds a connection, one that draws people closer to their romantic idea of a hometown sports team. What relationship will we have with Joey Gallo? How can we fully love a player destined to leave? The player’s intentions become evident in this scenario. While Carlos Correa may become hands-on—which may not reflect well on him given the 2022 Twins’ record—other athletes may embody their hitman spirit, poisoning the clubhouse spirit with a selfish demeanor. The Twins, oddly, acknowledged this issue. Following the disappointing 2018 season, Derek Falvey admitted that their clubhouse grew a funky stink stemming from grouchy veterans on short-term deals. Logan Morrison and Lance Lynn were whiny and bad—that was what he wanted to say. In response to their problem, the Twins turned around and acted like they didn’t hear their own words. Nelson Cruz, Jonathan Schoop, and Martín Pérez signed up for a ride on the 2019 Twins bus—a booming home run tour of the United States—but that season appears fluky. A hyper-juiced ball? Two full seasons of below .500 play afterward? The only thing right about that year was the Yankees immediately spanking them the second October entered the equation. Once COVID neutered the 2020 season, the Twins hopped back onto the ball, signing a litany of average talent to one-year deals, setting themselves up for a disastrous season the team is still reeling from. J.A. Happ almost threw 100 innings for the team. He made Dylan Bundy sound like a good idea. The ultimate question is this: what’s the end goal? One-year contracts are supposed to plug holes, not dominate the team's structure; imagine a dam constructed out of duct tape. The guess is that the team is saving for some future move, but few long-term deals of that nature have come to fruition, and the only significant splash players—Josh Donaldson and Carlos Correa—are no longer Twins. Ehire Adrianza entered the batter’s box donning a Minnesota jersey more times than either of those players. They were able to nail down a Byron Buxton contract, although they seemed disappointed that they couldn’t trade him to Philadelphia for scraps beforehand. The Twins deserve credit for that signing, but his deal pays him $15 million a season—far less than the market rate for superstar talent. If anything, the agreement should fuel a spending spree: they have their star locked down for relatively little, add as many great players as you can. Even with little tied down in their books, the Twins remained hesitant to drop enough money to coax Correa back home. There’s no purpose to their choices. They’re saving money for a future in which they save more money. Maybe they’re looking even further forward, but there’s no guarantee that free agents down the road—enjoy all that money, Rafael Devers—actually become available. Until that big, non-opt-outable deal occurs, they’ll remain in this loop, always saving for a someday that never comes.

  38. It is sort of hilarious how we basically have Zombie Correa Free Agency: it never truly ends. Would I take Correa, even with the potential risks that have started cropping up with the medicals from both the Giants & the Mets? yes, because with the Twins as a FA destination...you have to take some risks. Correa answers a lot of questions for the twins in the short term, even with the medicals. Hilariously, it would instantly take the Twins from a bad off-season to a pretty great one in one swing. If you told everyone in early December the Twins were going to sign Correa, Vasquez, and Gallo the response would have been: "wow!" followed by "wait, how does Gallo fit on this roster?" and we'd be spending all our time trying to figure out if Kepler's being traded and for what... I don't think it's going to happen. There's some noise, but in the end I think there's barely any chance that Correa ends up back here, so I'm viewing the whole thing with a sort of eye-rolling bemusement.

  39. Let's begin with the fact that it is February, The month of groundhogs. Yes the Twins roster is a mess, we call that Deja Vue. Except the ground hog looked at this roster and decided to swing left handed and start digging holes in the OF since we can never have enough left handers out there. He took a few swing and missed - leading him to believe he once again cracked the formula for being a Twins OF. February is also the shortest month of the year so we can get through our anguish quicker. By March we will have found some savvy old vets that we know we can restore to their glory and all will be well. By that time Gallo will have made contact with the ball for the first time and be too amazed to run. The British Museum provides us with the basis of hope - "February is named after an ancient Roman festival of purification called Februa" Then comes reality when the god of war - Mars comes MARCHing in.

  40. Oh p-ah leese get over this Correa infatuation. Move on from it. Maybe I'm the only one but at this point I think it would be a huge mistake to re engage and maybe resign Correa. Yes we need a shortstop. But what good is it to tie up so much payroll on one person when there are so many other needs on the team. A less than mediocre team result with a high priced shortstop does not make any sense.

But, if they claim him and put him on waivers when they sign someone else in the coming days, he's the kind of guy you'd like to get through waivers and work with.

  46. My take on the difference: If Correa was their only good player that can stay healthy (like the Twins) and Peña was coming into the season not yet fully rehabbed from his second major knee reconstruction in 2 years, they may have wanted to keep him. There is no question about Peña at short. He’s a stud defensively. Lewis isn’t and may not stick there long-term. We’re crossing our fingers that he’ll be league average. I don’t think fans here would be upset about losing Correa if we had a lineup consisting of Altuve, Bregman, Brantley, Alvarez, Tucker, etc., and a defensive stud waiting in the wings, to go along with the best pitching staff in baseball. If we were paying Verlander to $30M a year to win Cy Young awards vs. embarrassingly throwing junkballers in playoff games in Yankee Stadium because we’re scared of free agent contracts, our perception of the FO’s moves would be a little different. Most important note: The Astros weren’t scared of spending the money. They needed to lock up the best young hitter in the game (Alvarez). They didn’t let Correa walk to trim payroll to $100 million. We didn’t allocate those funds elsewhere. We haven’t developed squat that needs to be paid, let alone the premier left handed bat in the game. The money’s been put into the Scrooge McDuck vault, while every other quality FA fell off the board. That may change, but that’s how it looks to fans at the moment. Their FO has a track record of making good decisions (something ours doesn’t) and winning. They’ve been in the last 6 ALC, and 4 of the last 6 World Series, winning 2. They’ve had more success in 6 years that we’ve had in our entire history as a franchise. Ours looks like rudderless group of incompetents that makes the wrong move at nearly every turn. For some context on Correa: He has a career .272/.344/.849 playoff line. He’s got a number of monster, clutch hits. 18 HRs and 60 RBI in 300 playoff ABs. He is an absolute monster in big games. I couldn’t disagree more that he’s just a coattail rider that meant nothing to the Astros success. More context: Byron Buxton has 1 single in the playoffs in his entire career. Jorge Polanco 5 hits with a .364 slugging. Kepler is hitless with a .375 OPS in 25 PAs. Outside of Arraez who was phenomenal in 2019 (but hitless in 2020), Correa was the only guy on the roster that doesn’t curl into the fetal position in the post season. I agree completely with the premise. Sign some GD pitchers. The problem is they didn’t, and seemingly refuse to do that.

  47. Would I replace Pagan with Reyes? 100%. If I'm remembering correctly, Reyes missed all of last year with a shoulder problem, and isn't expected to be ready by opening day. May or June return time I think. Since I'd cut Pagan today without thinking twice I'd certainly take a chance on a guy with his kind of upside on a cheap deal and put him on the 60-day to start the season and see what he can do in building himself up for the first 2 months of the season. Duran and Reyes throwing fireballs at the end of games would be quite nice. That being said, I'd rather sign someone like Fulmer who has a higher chance of success, and is available to start the year. I'd replace Pagan with Fulmer immediately (and I'm annoyed it hasn't happened yet). "Perfect" scenario for pen arms? Get rid of Pagan. Sign Fulmer. Sign Reyes when you put Canterino on the 60-day, and then put Reyes on the 60-day and see if there's someone else you can sign late as well.

  48. If Boras wants to play some hardball, I’d go right back at them in the media and say, “yes, we’ve had talks, but we’re still evaluating the potential enormous risks here. Massive, unprecedented risks associated with such a long-term commitment. So unbelievably risky that’s it’s hard to even put into words.”

  49. If the Twins ended up with Correa I would have a lot of crow to eat. I still think the Mets get it done. Borras likely leveraging the Mets using the Twins offer as the bottom. If the Mets don't match then onto the Twins I would guess. The Lowest they can go is the Minnesota offer if you ask me. If the Mets don't match the Twins offer then I have to believe the Twins will get another chance. This has to be one of the craziest things to happen in Free Agency ever.

  50. First, looking forward to seeing how they progress. ? What I think a lot of people in this offseason have forgotten with the collapse in September, is this: "Last season we saw the Minnesota Twins race out to an early season lead in the American League Central division." I am on record for wanting C4 back, but he was not the reason for this jump. Sure he helped with is presence, approach, his work on the field. But this team as we have it now are the same bunch essentially, (swapping a few players), as the one that led the division until September with some extra potential if everyone is reasonably healthy, (dear god we had a lot of injuries and yet still led the division for that long), and Maeda coming back (SP or RP he is a plus addition). So, count me in as a thinking they can be contenders again in the division. That bar is not nearly as high in the AL Central as it is in the AL East or NL East/West.
