Article: Minnesota Twins Roster Projection 4.0

I'll be sad if we have to cut ties with Parmelee.

Same here, give him one last shot. He is Kubel, with more defensive flexibilty, more athleticism and he's much younger, see if Kubel will stay around in AAA for a month or so, because someone will get hurt, traded or Parm just won't be the answer, then give Kubel a shot! I'd like to see Callabello get a shot opening day to but if Pinto goes north, he's there right handed platoon partner with Kubel.

I disagree on Diamond. I don't think the Twins care much about losing him

at this point. Nor should they. They have Johnson, Gilmartin, and Ibarra for depth from the left side. I think it'll be Thielbar instead of Diamond.

They will try to trade Diamond, but will probably end up waiving him, and everybody knows that. They wouldn't have asked for Gilmartin and traded for johnson if they really wanted to keep Diamond that badly to take a slot away from theilbar who out proformed every pitcher other then Perkins last year. Don't you think that was the thought when they gave Albers the opportunity to go to Korea? They have some nice options from the left side now, don't forget about the young arms that are coming, there are more lefties than Thrope coming, and I have seen a lot of positives on some of those younger southpaws!

Starters- Pinto, Mauer, Dozier, Plouffe, Florimon, Willingham, Hicks, Arcia, DH Colabello/Parmalee platoon

Bench- Suzuki, Escobar, Colabello/Parmalee, Pressley

Starters- Nolasco, Hughes, Corriea, Pelfrey, Gibson

Pen- Perkins, Burton, Feiin, Duensing, Swarczak, Thielbar, Tonkin

AAA- Kubel, Bartlett, Hermann

Waivers- Diamond, Deduno

Let Kubel prove he's back on Rochesters time. Bartlett, I'm just not interested for so many reasons. Diamond and Deduno dont crack the rotation so don't dilute another area of your team by putting them in the pen.

I keep hearing there will most likely be a trade before opening day, teams are always looking to 'pen arms, the Reds and Tigers come to mind. Burton and Duensing, one of or both will probably be in another uniform before the week's out.

Herrmann can play 3 outfield positions. He can go into 1B. He played 3B in college. Of course he can catch. He also takes real quality at bats, uses the whole field and can hit some gaps.

I do think that Presley isn't the given that I thought he was all along.

Herrmann is the super utility guy that Cuddy was for the twins. Herrmann was taking grounders at 3rd to years ago when Plooffe was hurt, He is a good athlete and can play just about anywhere. and they have enough other pieces that if Hicks couldn't play for a day or two, that they would be fine. Also, Parm could play center in a pinch, He played there some in college if I'm not mistaken. It probably wouldn't be pretty, but was Cuddy?

Yes, but Cuddy could hit and he didn't ever play catcher. Anyway--I don't like the concept of three catchers unless Herrmann is a credible hitter. I think the Parm/Kubel decision is a tough one. Neither has shown much this spring and perhaps the loss of the loser won't be traumatic. I also like Scott Diamond. I think at some point again he is going to be an effective starting pitcher, but I don't think it will be with the Twins. To me, he isn't a bullpen guy, so if the Twins put him there, they are stashing him, and that doesn't benefit either the team on the field or the player. I hope the brain trust can find a trade partner and get something for Mr. Diamond.

Geez, what was the point in signing Kubel to a minor league contract if he was guaranteed to make the opening day roster? Just to soft sell it to Twins fans? What other teams would offer Kubel a major league contract?

At the time our 40-man roster was full. So by signing him to a minor league contract even though he was guaranteed to make the roster it gave them several months to open up a spot for him.

Kubel is still young at 31-32 and has the potential to hit .280 with 30 HR. I don't think we'd say the same for Parmelee, would we?

Honestly, while it seems unlikely, I could see Parmelee doing that. If you gave me even odds on one of them doing it this season and I had to pick one, I'd probably go with Kubel, but I'd be pretty tempted to go with Parmelee anyway, just due to youth. Kubel seems like he's probably reached his decline phase, meaning he's unlikely to put up a career year at this point. Parmelee has shown flashes of real hitting ability, he just hasn't put it together for a season, yet.

Yeah, the more I think about it the more I think Presley's name should be in black. If Herrmann's on the roster they don't really need him, and he hasn't shown anything this spring.

As I started reading this thread, that was the first thought that crossed my mind. Herrmann obviously is not a great choice for CF, but if he only plays there 10-12 times on the season, he seems to be quick enough to manage it, and with a decent arm. Will it be pretty, probably not, but this season may be pretty ugly, regardless. I wouldn't mind seeing Herrmann get some at bats, anyway, I think he has the potential to be near league-average, and if he could do that backing up all 3 outfield spots, plus catcher and 1B (and 3B?), that's not a bad player to have around.

Although Hermann has taken some reps at 1B this spring, Trevor Plouffe will be the likely backup First Baseman in this Hermann-makes-it scenario. He played there in 2011 at Roc. and has played at 1B with the Twins in games last year, 2012, and 2011.
One thing we know for sure is that as long as Gardy is manager there will be several people out of position every game. Not just on the field but also in the batting order. This seems to give the manager some sort of piece of mind. All I've ever thought about that philosophy is that there are players that NEVER get comfortable under him and that NEVER reach their full potential. Another thing, not using the DH spot the way it was intended is ludicrous. Remember the year that Winfield played at that spot? Now that worked. We need one of those guys real bad like. The Twins were still considering spending the money for one more starting pitcher this winter. I don't understand why they didn't bring in a DH bat for a season. Instead they are holding with Willingham who can't play left and now can't hit. I may not be going to a game till 2015.

So...who is going to be the backup CF?

That's Ryan Pressly the Rule 5 pitcher that we acquired last year that got optioned not Alex Pressley the OF.

Right now the Twins' have 16 position players and 13 pitchers in camp. So it looks like it is between Diamond and Thielbar for the last pitcher spot in the BP.

Rohlfing is just in camp to help out so it is between Kubel, Parmelee, Colabello and Bartlett for 2 spots.

I have a feeling Bartlett is just there in case Florimon has a setback. I'm calling Colabello as making the roster since he platoons with the other DH and backs up 1B. That means Kubel or Parmelee for the last slot and it is most likely Kubel.

Hicks and Pinto make the team. I didn't necessarily see that coming a month ago.

It's absolutely mind-bending how often this is getting butchered, to the point where even the person correcting someone else is wrong.

Say it with me:

Alex PRESLEY is the outfielder.

Ryan PRESSLY is the relief pitcher.

Sweet smoking Jesus, people. It's not that hard.

For reasons I can't explain, i wouldn't have had a problem with the Twins giving Kubel a 2-year contract when he signed with Arizona. And now, i can't hardly stomach the idea of him being back on the Twins. Hope I get over that aversion.

If Kubel puts up numbers similar to 2013 Morneau he'll be worth it. Otherwise, maybe not. I wouldn't mind seeing Vargas up before the year ends.

How salary comes into play for a guy making $2M is beyond me. Are we to bring our own napkins to the game this year?

What indications? Are there quotes from the decision makers that indicate he's likely won a spot?

I would guess the main indication is looking at the lineups in these late spring training games.

I'd concur on the pitching part of this. I'm going to differ slightly on the hitters. Unfortunately, I think Kubel is in. I think right now there are three spots still being fought for.

1) Presley appears safe, but I'm not going to lock him in. Hicks should just play every day anyway. If he gets hurt, Mastroianni can be up for the next game. One of Escobar and possibly Bartlett and Parmelee - as bad as it sounds - could retrieve fly balls from the warning track for the rest of a game.

2) I'm starting to waver on if Arcia is the Opening Day guy. It might just be Kubel. That could possibly leave Colabello as a RH bench bat, which is so sorely needed.

Right now, I have 3 spots for Colabello, Arcia, Presley, Parmelee and Bartlett. With a giant "WHO KNOWS?" as my disclaimer.
