After missing a lot of time in 2010, Hirschfeld got off to a great start in 2011. He was the sethspeaks.net selection as top Twins minor league pitcher in April and May. In four April starts, he went 1-0 with a 2.05 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. In 22 innings, he gave up 15 hits and walked five while striking out 18. In five starts in May, he went 2-2 with a 2.93 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. In 30.2 innings, he gave up 21 hits, walked eight and struck out 23. He was "just" honorable mention in June despite going 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA in five starts. He made six more starts in August before an innings limit pushed him to the bullpen in August.

 

2010 was a trying season for Hirschfeld. He pitched just 32 innings because of an arm injury. It was frustrating because 2009 was a terrific year for him in Ft. Myers. He went 7-7 but posted a 2.23 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in 32 appearances, including 17 starts. He went to the Arizona Fall League at the end of that season. In 2008 he went 10-5 with a 3.30 ERA in Beloit.

 

Drafted in the 29th round by the Expos in 2004 out of high school in Utah, Hirschfeld went to college. He was drafted out of junior college the next year by the Rockies in the 25th round but instead decided to the College of South Nevada and then San Diego State University. In 2007 he, went 5-4 with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP at SDSU before the Twins drafted him in the 9th round and sent him to Elizabethton.

 

Hirschfeld is 6-5 and 220 pounds. He has very good control and does not give up many home runs. His fastball sits between 87 and 90, occasionally touching 91 mph. He is not a strikeout pitcher, so not allowing free passes is crucial. He has a good curveball and a sharp slider. The unfortunate thing about his lost 2010 season is that it is a year of lost development. One thing he needs to continue to work on his changeup.

Has Hirschfeld got any future with he big club??

He's finally made consecutvie starts in AAA for first time & is probably there to stay (full yr too late IMO as he earned it last yr).

At 26 (27 Sept 8), he is again a Rule V probable. Could he be our version of a Terry Doyle. He's got another yr till FA.

3.33 ERA in 497 career minor league IP with 6.5K/9. His only downfall is he doesnt throw hard (surprising in the org) but he gets guys out.

Jeff Manship is out of options after this yr.....I could see Hirch being that kind of swing guy for the Twins the next couple yrs.
