Sano Tweaks Elbow, Will Get Examined

That's the problem when someone ask for the "Last Time" instead of "How many times". :) I'd guess 4 out of 5 times it seems to go down the surgery road. Sano will be fine. If surgery, this is a 7-9 month thing, and I'd even be fine with them waiting a couple months before testing it out as well. People (before the tweak)who were hoping for All Star Break this year were too optimistic anyway. IMO. September call up, sure. But he's doesn't even need to be on the 40 man yet.

I believe TJ surgery for players is a faster recovery time. He might be able to play in Sept or early the AFL (if he were eligible).

Well...

If he has surgery, the soonest he will be able to play is in the Dominican Winter League. They do not need to add him to the 40 man roster, so unless they are competing and need his bat as a DH/PH to get them over the edge, they will not not do it. And, no, he is not eligible for the AFL. He can hit a bit and catch the ball and work on his footwork and fielding but not throw with this. So he will probably spend time in EST and maybe rehab at GCL if doing well.

I would just give it some time to see what the MRI will show instead of thinking of the worst case scenario.

To me, there is a big difference between counting chickens and counting one chicken.

You're right, this one chicken is a gold egg layer. So it matters a lot more than your average chicken.

Of all of our young hopefuls, this is the one I want to work out the most. But if you're waiting for all of these prospects to workout and the parades to start next year, you're entitled to your belief but it is in complete opposition to the odds. So let's just all hope that this is a minor setback for this major chicken and the odds effect players far less important to our future.

The Twins had Sano examined by Dr. Andrews after the elbow pain first popped up. He said that rest and rehab was the best solution.

Short of sacrificing a goat in front of an ancient temple and fasting for six months, I'm not really sure what else people expected the team to do. They did all they could to handle this situation the right way. Criticizing the team doctors for Sano is seriously misguided and wrong-headed.

Should have gotten a live chicken.

As soon as I read this, I figured there would be folks on TD criticizing the Twins handling of Sano's health care. A bit predictable.

I hope Mr. Sano is ok with rest, and if he has surgery, all goes well, and he can get back on track ASAP.

I know man, with their track record, I can't believe they are being criticized.

I don't know. This is just entirely predictable for me. I've been saying this would happen all offseason.

I know they talked to Dr. James Andrews, and he's a legend. But TJ surgery is such a simple thing nowadays. I really think it should be done almost as a precaution with there is any kind of tearing in the UCL. If they had gotten it done immediately, he'd be getting close to being on the field again. The recovery time is much shorter for position players.

It's a bit ridiculous to go against the advice of the most respected TJS doctor in the world.

Note to Terry.... Call Ron and have him move Mauer to 3rd ,since next year we will have Sano and Vargas rotating between 1b and DH

....but seriously...this move makes sense to begin implementation this year, perhaps by moving Mauer to 3B against some RHP with a platoon partner like Parmelee, with Plouffe at 3B and Mauer at 1B against LHP. It could improve this year's offense and prepare the team for the inevitable transition to Vargas/Sano/Plouffe at 1B in 2015.

I just don't get why people think that it is easy to "move" players around. Heck, if they move Mauer to SS, that would solve a lot of problems ;)

Not all positions are made equal and not all positions are equally easy to play for some guys. Really. It is not fantasy, it is not computer games. Third base and first base are totally different beasts...

Thry, this discussion has been ongoing from Mauer's first contract extension. Of course, 1B isn't 3B. But we all know what an athlete Mauer is, and we also know that guys much less athletic have manned the position and done well (Torre MVP, Cabrera, Killebrew), it's not like anyone's asking Mauer to play SS here...or reinventing the wheel- there's not a doubt in my mind that he could handle the position better than any of the aforementioned.

Does anyone not believe that the Twins will use this as an excuse to not increase spending levels next year? They'll get the apologists in the media to say the plan is for Sano and Buxton to be called up in the middle of next season, so there's really no point spending money for a team that isn't going to compete and is just waiting for those two to be ready sometime. Just get them some reps late in the year, and then start setting up to complete in '16 or '17, depending on how quickly they get up to speed. So now we get to wait through at least 2, maybe 3 more seasons before they start putting a team on the field that is actually meant to compete.

This sucks. We all know that. And we've all been on eggshells the past couple of months after first hearing of the trouble. But the reality is, not only are there no absolutes to a position player having this discomfort, but the recovery time and success are even greater if TJ surgery is indeed necessary.

And while I hate to sound like a goody-goody optimist, let's not be fatalists this early on. The best in the business gave him an OK, rest and rehab RX. There is no medical report as of yet saying anything is wrong. Perhaps this is stiffness, tendenitis or a little scar tissue from the initial tweak and the rehab and now cutting loose. Let it play out before we all start looking for nearby bridges I say.

Let me tell you (from experience) : If you ask someone to play 3B, you might ask him to play SS. 1B and C (and corner OF) are more alike than 3B and SS. You probably noticed that most third basemen are failed shortstops, not catchers. There is a reason for this.

Agreed. Because of his athleticism, Joe might be able to do it but not in a month. And probably not as a 31 year old.

Sure, Sano having TD surgery would be a bummer, but it is not the end of the world. Sano will bounce back. Maybe things will not work out in a time frame people were reliant on... what do you do? **** happens.

Plouffe will be sufficient. He will not be the uber prospect we hoped would be making his debut this season with excitement.

We will accept it and move on from here.

What else can one do?

I'm not a Twins apologist and I don't believe that would happen, not even for a second. Heads are on the chopping block, this team has lost 90+ games three years running. No one is going to be foolish enough to tell the fans they need to wait three additional years to compete. If anything, a Sano injury would mean it is more likely that they WOULD spend money to compensate for the expected gap he would fill.

I dont know what would happen, but to be fair there is a strong sentiment often posted here that there is no reason to add talent until "the core" is in place.
