Everything fantasy baseball. Who is going #1? Who will be the biggest sleeper? Best pitcher? Biggest risk? Best value? Is there a rookie who is going to bust onto the scene?

 

Been a few years since I did fantasy baseball. It's a Twins forum, so we don't have a whole lot of fantasy hopes these days. Feel free to post them here or in the sports bar though as I'm sure there are a few folks here who play. Perhaps you could get a Twins Daily league going.

 

You could get away with Twins related fantasy questions in the Twins forum, but other than Mauer, who will be listed as a C but likely won't catch many games, and Perkins there's not much worth drafting... Dozier could be a nice sleeper, as could Arcia.

Mike Trout is to fantasy baseball as Byron Buxton is to top 100 prospect lists. Both are easy, unanimous #1 picks.

 

Best pitcher : Clayton Kershaw with Yu Darvish next. Though I'm really excited to draft Andrew Cashner in the 12th round and get 4th round value. (Wait, are any of you guys in my league? If yes, forget I wrote that.)

 

Biggest risk : Robinson Cano is a top 10 player in most projections. Part of that is position scarcity and part of that is he's a really good hitter. But I think Safeco saps some of that power and he's a 20 HR guy instead of a 27 HR guy. And that Seattle lineup is pretty questionable, giving him fewer RBI/run scoring opportunites.

 

Best value : Cashner, Brandon Belt, Chase Headley

 

Rookie : Well, I hope Miguel Sano. Otherwise I'd say Boegarts could be Manny Machado 2.0 this year (lazy comp, I know) or Oscar Tavares. Not quite a rookie but Christian Yelich too, he's very young but could be sneaky good.

Trout and Miggy are top two and number three is a ways back.

 

SP: Kershaw is the only SP worth considering in the first round.

 

Biggest Risk: Any of the position scarce guys. C-2B-3B and SS. They tend to be taken earlier than they produce. Ian Desmond leaps to mind.

 

Best Value: I agree with Cashner... Kinda agree with Belt... But I will not chase Chase. I will add Wacha to the value picks along with Willin Rosario and Iwakuma.

 

Rookie: Bogaarts for sure... At least I hope so... I got him and I'm keeping him. I'm thinking Taijuan Walker will break camp and perform for Seattle. Wong and D'Arnaud might be worth a flyer.

 

I like Taveras and Sano but we may have wait longer for them.

 

Things to Watch: Braun... Will the lack of steroids curb his production? Cano... Out of New York into Seattle. Goldschmidt... Could he do it again? Stanton... When will Stanton become Stanton?

#1/#2 is personal preference - Miguel Cabrera or Mike Trout is a personal preference thing as long as Miggy still has 3B eligibility. If he was 1B only, Trout would be ahead by a good distance.

 

Biggest sleeper - depends on what you consider a sleeper...early rounds, I think the classic "established player returning from a bad year/injury" strategy will work best - Pujols and Bautista being big ones. Middle rounds - James Shields and RA Dickey will give you 220+ IP, so even with their win totals not being great, their strikeout levels will always be good, and they'll have more "chances" to win a game than most 6 IP and out starters. Late rounds - guys with a big opportunity and skills that haven't had the playing time previously - Kelly Johnson, Evan Gattis, Jonathan Villar, and Junior Lake are all on the radar as $1 sort of guys in an auction.

 

Best pitcher - Easily Kershaw. That said, one thing many haven't noticed is that with the increase in quality pitching, elite closers have become much more valuable in baseball. Of the top pitchers in ESPN's player rater from 2013, 4 of the top 10 were closers, 5 of the top 15 and 7 of the top 20 follow suit. Guys like Kimbrel, Kenley Jansen, and Chapman are actually worth an early pick over a second-tier starting pitcher.

 

Biggest risk: I love young stud hitters as much as the next guy, but Goldschmidt, McCutchen, Harper, Chris Davis, and many more simply haven't done it at an elite level for long enough in my eyes for the prices they're going in mock auctions at this point. Blowing your budget to lock down these guys is the biggest risk I've seen in early mocks and "expert league" drafts so far.

 

Rookies: I'd keep my eye on position battles in the spring that could give guys like Yordano Ventura, Jonathan Singleton, Trevor Bauer, Noah Syndergaard, Jon Schoop, and Adam Eaton significant playing time to open the season. The guys who will have certain spots to get ahold of are Juan Abreu in Chicago and Billy Hamilton in Cincinnati right now.

 

One of the great things in the game right now is the high amount of young players who are emerging, both pitching and hitting. Guys like Julio Teheran, Leonys Martin, Andrew Cashner, and Wil Myers have only just begun to tap into their possible fantasy value. Then again, one of the more underrated values in the game is a long-standing veteran who hasn't really faded at all, like Alex Rios, or one coming off a tough season, like CC Sabathia or Nick Swisher.

After 10 games, Mauer will be eligible for 1B. Which dramatically lowers his fantasy value. He goes from a top 5 catcher to a 3rd-tier 1B. Perkins is probably the second most viable fantasy starter, but after him it gets pretty muddy. Hopefully Arcia will be a sneaky choice this year and maybe Plouffe's added beef means some higher power numbers. Past that, the Twins are about as boring a fantasy team as they come...until 2015...

 

Yeah I've got Trout #1 with a bullet. #2 I've got Cabrera, but Andrew McCutcheon is super temping.

 

Kershaw is my number one pitcher with Sherzer and Felix Hernandez going after him..I think Michael Wacha wins 20 this year and sneaks up into that top tier, making him the best value, even though he will probably go pretty high in most drafts.

 

I 100% agree with Cano being the highest risk. Power should drop, as should RBI.

 

Oscar Tavares is my rookie to watch. Wil Myers is my breakout guy this year.

Given the opportunity, would you take a young guy with potential for a huge year over an established vet? I.e. Jean Segura over Dustin Pedroia? Maybe a bigger stretch would be Puig over Adam Jones? Do you take the more established player by rule-of-thumb or take the young guy with hopes for a huge year? I know there are a ton of variables that go into picking players, but I personally like taking risks on younger players.

In all the leagues I've played in a player will never lose eligibility mid-season, so Mauer would be C eligible until next season. I've played mostly in ESPN & Yahoo.

Definitely Segura. Gomez may be a top-20 guy in regular leagues (although his value is horrible in a points league, so beware if you're trying that format out for the first time), but there are a few guys who have the upside of what he'll give you (.260/20+ HR/40+ SB) while Segura is among a pretty elite group at SS.

When did Segura move to SS? I may just be confused because he was my 2b in the MLB The Show.

 

H's been a SS his entire major league career. When he was coming up, there was some worry about his arm strength, so the Angels started him at 2B after signing him. He showed more range than expected and a lot more arm, and as he moved to the upper levels in 2011, he moved to SS, and he's not played a game anywhere else since.

Anybody looking to join another league? Me and some local buddies have had a Yahoo H2H mixed league going for 5-6 years but we had a few people drop out this year and we're currently sitting at only 8 teams. We'd like to get it to at least 10, preferably 12.

What's wrong with Yahoo? I've never played on a different website so interested to know why you don't care for it. I think it's pretty slick.

 

Their technology is drastically behind other sites, and there's just no two ways to that. It's even worse in auction format. The one area they're strong in is keeper/dynasty leagues for newbies to a keeper/dynasty league. At a basic scoring/roster level, they've changed the standard league, and I much prefer the standard scoring and roster that I was introduced to fantasy with, utilizing 5 outfielders, 1 utility player, and no defined pitcher roles with a small bench. A Yahoo standard roster has remained the same since the late 1990s, but it's their own creation instead of going by the roster put forth by the original Rotisserie League. I've preferred ESPN for a long time because of their better technology, especially in the draft room, and their investment in keeping a standard league to the standard format of fantasy baseball instead of trying to tell fantasy baseball to adhere to them. I've played on lots of formats online (CBS, Fantrax, MLB.com, Fox) for "custom" leagues as well, and I'd put Yahoo's scoring/game play near the bottom.

I'm completely the opposite - I've found yahoo to be less cumbersome and more streamlined than any other for most any fantasy format.

 

I've not completed a draft on Yahoo's software since Bush was in office. Not even kidding. And I play in at least one drafted Yahoo league every single season.

I actually had some issues with this draft the other night, kept booting me out of the draft room. First time that's happened to me. Kept saying I was already logged in on a different computer. Could be because I still still had the yahoo window open on my computer at work.

 

I've played fantasy football on other sites but only yahoo for baseball. I found yahoo to be way better than the other places and the recent redesign has taken a little getting used to but it's better overall. They had it for the first time last football season and this is the first time for baseball. Draft room could use an update tho, it's still the same way it's been for years.
