Notes from the Ron Gardenhire Show (on 1500ESPN)

Here are my notes from this morning's Ron Gardenhire Show on 1500ESPN. Listening on www.1500espn.com:

  • Like the they're getting runners in scoring position, James Shields is good, but would like to get the runs in. Like our offense.
  • If Twins win today, would be a 4-3 road trip between NYY and TB!
  • Morneau is swinging good. DH today. At home, you'll see him playing some 1B. He's anxious to get out there. Had a great series in NY. Gardy and Morneau talk before and after every game.
  • Mauer-Willingham-Morneau - Why? - Willingham is swinging well. Lefties are swinging and missing more. Perfect situtation to split them up. Makes decision for other manager tougher.
  • Carroll down in order - Would do it if he really struggled. But he does all the little things like moving people over. Like him there now because he takes so many pitches which helps everyone.

Philip Humber/AJ Pierzynski - Perfect Game - Team was actually watching the game in the clubhouse. Very neat. Humber normally throws a lot of pitches. Was fun to watch and always fun to see something like that.

Remember from Humber (Note - only 11 big league wins before yesterday) - Outstanding curveball. Nice changeup. Fastball decent. When with Twins, coming off elbow injury, struggled with his control. Looks bigger and stronger.

Liriano - He just needs to have confidence in his own ability. He'll tell them that he's fighting it. Gardy tells him that it's just a kids' game, have fun, it's a game, not every pitch is the end of the world. He might be the only one who doesn't realize how good he can be. Mauer will catch him today and Gardy told Joe to try to keep him out of his head and having fun. Contract year could be part of his struggles and over-thinking.

Blackburn - just finished a bullpen. All-out bullpen and he feels fantastic. Two bullpens. He'll start Tuesday.

Perkins - is ready to go. Feels great. 100%

Swarzak - will go to the 'pen and get him in the mix.

Gibson Ejection of Span, then Gardy - Gardy won't be fined. Was still arguing the balk call earlier. Denard just said that wasn't a good pitch. Thought it could have been handled better. Denard said, "I'm not disrespecting you" one too many times.

Red Sox - everything that can go wrong, will go wrong... they're having a rough time, and hopefully we can keep them having a rough time.

Valentine - fans and players against him - I know he made some comments that didn't go over well. Performance on the field helps comments not seem so bad.

Hughes - We got stuck with our pitching. Not going to DL Perkins or Blackburn. Had to move a player. Need Parmelee to play 1B. Plouffe, Burroughs and Hughes all out of options. Will probably lose him.

Dozier - always on radar. He's working on coming in on baseballs. Little back issue, but sat out. He's doing fine. He's going to be a good one.

Casilla - he's in no-no land right now, gotta get him going.

Schedule - Still have more tough games ahead. Boston still has great players. KC - good young players. Detroit coming up.

5-10 not good, but we feel good about where we are.

How long will they wait on Casilla? He's not young, he has a lot of MLB time and at bats, and he's shown over time that he cannot be trusted to be an effective, every day player.

He was really solid from May through July last year... then was hurt. It's a fair question, but as long as he's healthy, I don't have a problem with him. It would be nice to give him a day or so though!

Seriously? The D-word is now a magic word for getting tossed out of a game? Pretty thin skin on some umpires.

The problem with giving a day off to Casilla is that Plouffe will be the second baseman. Bad deal. That's why the Hughes DFA really limits this team.

I do not mind Casilla at all btw. He has been fine on the field mostly, and will heat up with the bat. Just give him time. At this point he is hitting at the same rate as Valencia and better than Doumit, Plouffe, Burroughs. and playing better defence than all of them. He is the least of Twins' problems at the #9 spot
