Twins were never truly linked to Jose Abreu but now it is official we will not sign him. Jesse Sanchez, one of the best international prospects expert, wrote today that Abreu is officially down to three teams; Astros, Red Sox, and the White Sox. The Rangers, Mariners, and Giants showed strong interest in the slugger but are no longer in the running. Abreu Could sign in the next two weeks. Link to article below:

He never made sense for them anyway since they need to keep 1B open long-term for Mauer.

I don't know why they couldn't slot him in as a DH. The guy has a David Ortiz-like ceiling. No one's ever complained about him being a DH only.

I knew it was going to happen, realistically, but I desperately hoped the Twins would go after Abreu. Maybe I'm buying into the hype too much, but I think he'll be a great hitter.

Curious group left in the bidding. Astros and White Sox up against only one big-dollar team, the Red Sox? This seems like it could have been a winnable bidding war- with the Twins urgently needing punch in the lineup at First Base, huge wasted opportunity.

Believe the hype. And "desperate" is what the Twins FO is in distinct denial about.

I'll feel better about this reasoning when the Twins actually say Mauer is a first baseman.

It is an odd group. Two teams that were actually worse than us are left in the running. While I'm not surprised we weren't finalists, we have bigger needs, but it would have at least been nice to be in the conversation.

I predict the White Sox win this then. Clearly. Konerko is going to be gone, Napoli and Ortiz are in Boston, and who wants to really play in Houston for that team?

I don't think a guy coming from Cuba is going to care about anything except how much money he's going to get. I think the Astros will sign him if they really want him.

Which is yet another reason why the White Sox will be viewing the Twins in their rear view mirrors starting in 2014.

Do the presence of Willingham and Doumit keep the Twins from looking for a hitter or a player who may need to DH?

Doumit and Willingham are not part of the solution. Abreu could be. We could have given Willingham to the Orioles and used those dollars on someone who will be a longer term solution.

They absolutely are. It's part of why they need to go.

From MLB traderumors on Tuesday. It's now up to 8 teams that were apparently in the running, with supposedly 5 that were in it for the similar big dollars that he ultimately received (add the Rockies and one other to the big dollar list), and curiously, the Sox familiarity with past Cubans and their success with the organization was a significant factor:

1) "Also from the conference, Abreu himself stated (through his translator) that the history of Cuban players finding success in the White Sox organization was an important element for him in choosing to sign with the Sox.

2) Abreu's agent, Barry Praver, tells Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago that eight teams made offers to his client, and five of the offers hit $60+MM (Twitter link). It's already been reported that the Rockies were surprise contenders, offering $63MM over six years."
