With Marquis being re-called to start tonight the Twins have to make a corresponding move to make room for him on the 25-man roster, what do you think they will/should do?

 

1. Option Liriano to Rochester (requires Liriano's permission since he has 5 years of service)

2. DL Blackburn or Perkins

3. Dump Burroughs

4. Option Burnett to Rochester

5. Other.

 

If Liriano accepts I think the best option would be to send him to Rochester. That would at least give them a couple of more days before they have to make a decision on Blackburn. If Blackburn can't pitch Sunday you DL him and bring up Diamond or Manship for a spot start.

I think the Liriano to Rochester hope is a pipedream. For one, I would highly doubt that Liriano would sign off on the move. For another, I'm pretty sure he'd have to pass through some sort of "optional waivers" process that some desperate team might try and claim him. The Twins could pull him back, but his final destination wouldn't be Rochester.

 

Personally, right call or not, I think we'll see Burnett sent to Rochester. That would buy them a couple days to decide if either Perk or Blackburn need to be DL'd. If either do, then Burnett will be recalled immediately.

 

Just opinions.

First of all Liriano is not going to rochester so everyone get that out of your heads. He is not going to accept that and nor should he. He has earned that 5 years of service time and there is no reason for him to waive it no matter how bad he is pitching. Next Burnett is not going to Rochester he has been the best reliever on the team so far so that makes no sense. My guess is that both Perkins and Blackurn are DL'ed and Marquis and Manship are recalled. with Manship working out of the bullpen for now. If they don't want to dl them Jeff Gray would be the guy that would be dfa'ed not Burnett.

Why not, Marquis did and he has 11 years of experience.

 

Liriano's future is at stake. If he is looking to make any money beyond this year he has to show that he is a capable pitcher. Right now he can't do that for the Twins. It would be best for him and the Team for him to agree to go to Rochester. This scenario is based on the scenario that he has options remaining, which I don't know for sure.

 

Probably 1/3rd of his 5 years of experience was earned while on the DL so he really hasn't earned veteran status yet in my opinion.

Blackburn to the DL, I think. Thursday is his fifth day since pitching, so they can DL him retroactive to that. He would be eligible to come off on the 29th and the Twins can roll with Pavano, Swarzak, Liriano, Hendriks, and Marquis. One move not mentioned would be to option Parmelee. I don't know what Morneau's plans are for sure, but if he is the primary 1B, there really is no point in keeping Parmelee around. When the injuries get sorted out, they can go back to 12 pitchers and at that time, I suspect sweet Drew would be on his way back to the majors since Doumit and Mauer will be DHing more and Towles and Rivera haven't hit at Rochester and Drew is on the 40-man.

Liriano needs help with his confidence. Sending him to AAA isn't going to help that part of his game. The guy has talent, we have all seen that, he just needs help with the mental part of the game. At this point, I think we can all agree it is beyound what Gardy, Anderson or any of his other pitchers can help him with. There has to be some sports psychologist that can help him work through his issues. If Pavano can work his way through the Yankee lineup with an 85 mile an hour fastball, I fail to see why Frankie can't do it with his stuff.

 

 

Personel catcher?

Hypnosis?

motivational lectures in between innings?

 

I keep thinking each start, this will be the one where everything clicks into place, but each start I fear that he will never get to that place. Is it really time to give up on him?

Depends on how Blackburn feels, if he has any doubt about being able to go next time, I'd DL him. If not, then DFA Gray, I don't think anyone will claim him and that gives them a spot to work with for Bowden :). I don't really want to see them carry just 3 bench players.

If the coaching staff thinks he's lost it, I'd rather send Liriano to the pen and DFA Gray since the lefty would certainly be dispensible assuming Perkins is not hitting the DL. Frankie usually pitches fine in his first inning of work anyway. His trade value is nearly shot at the moment, I don't think sending him to Rochester would help much. If he succeeds in the pen perhaps his value rebounds.

 

If Gardy and Anderson think he can work out his issues, I'm fine giving Liriano another 5 starts or so. This season needs to be all about developing the young guys who will be part of this team for the next half decade and cultivating trade value for those that aren't. The team is so far not interested in doing the first aspect, hopefully they follow through with the second. Gray can get a pink slip regardless, he seems like a competent bullpen lefty, but most of the parts back there are so uninspiring they are interchangable.

You have Gray confused with Maloney. Maloney, Duensing and Perkins are the 3 lefties currently in the BP.

Liriano needs to pitch out of the bullpen even if that means spot starts for Duensing until Blackburn is game-ready. With Perkins questionable, I don't think the Twins can afford to send a pitcher down. Having nabbed the lefty-hitting Clete Thomas from waivers, Sean Burroughs seems a likely candidate to send down.

With two pitchers currently with gimpy arms, maybe they won't send a pitcher down. With Mauer playing a few games a week at 1B and Morneau playing there a few games a week...Parmelee isn't going to see a lot of action. Wouldn't surprise me if the players sent down is Parmelee!

Absolutely. Just giving up on the guy, and basically giving him away for Burroughs to stay.

 

Could have sent Parmelee back to AAA as well.
