Article: Twins shut down Mauer for rest of season

Recommended Posts

A concussion is a little different -- you come back and it is only 80% healed and you get hit on the head, you are really messed up. Wasn't that part of why Koski took years to recover (if he is even fully recovered now)?

I doubt Mauer is using the concussion as a fake excuse to stay home. He is aware of the criticism of not playing games, and would be playing if he could simply to counter that talk. Plus, I am guessing he is a lot more competitive than his critics suggest. He knows he was in contention for a silver slugger -- possibly golden glove etc. He would be playing if he could.

I don't follow the rest of MLB that closely, so somebody please answer me this: is there any other team who has lost so many key players for extended periods of time to post-concussion syndrome? We've now seen Morneau, Span, and Mauer miss significant time the past few years. Are we cursed? Take that back...we know we're cursed. But are other teams also struggling to deal with this somewhat new phenomenon?

Why was my second post deleted? I said that Hunter often says questionable things?

It wasn't a personal attack, you can't just choose to delete a post because I think that "one of your favorite Twins of all time" can often say eve rolling inducing things that nobody takes seriously.

Sensitivity to light, noise remain for Mauer | Star Tribune

My favorite thing about that video is this exchange:

Reporter: Joe, what are your symptoms?

Mauer: Um, sensitivity to light...

(As reporters shine a GIGANTIC HEAT LAMP directly in his face)

I don't understand why anyone in the media or fanbase legitimately thought Mauer was playing again this year, or why you'd want him to. The team has shut him down in other years (such as the end of 2007, or intermittently in 2011) over situations far less career-threatening than this.

Mauer was good this year, and I think most educated fans have come around on the type of player he is and his importance to the fans and franchise. But his future as a catcher is seriously in doubt, and we just have to hope that he heals from his bruised brain (because that's what it is) in time for next spring.

"I think some people take pain in different ways," Twins center fielder Torii Hunter said. "Some people have to play at 100 percent, and Joe may be one of those guys. I've seen it happen. Joe is a good player, and he wants to perform at 100 percent, not at 80 percent.

"Me, I grew up in a different time. I'm ready to play no matter what -- broken toe, hamstring, groin, back -- and that's the mentality I've grown to have."

June 2007

Kind of miss the old "Twins Way"

What a crappy thing for Torii Hunter to say. What a crappy attitude towards a serious brain injury.

Ever had a serious concussion? Try it, then get back to us how it's just a little owie.
