Buxton named BA's player of the year

From Ben Badler- "best minor leaguer I've ever seen" and "the comparisons of Byron Buxton to Trout at the same age are legitimate."

Also, from JJ Cooper- "we always take age, league context, and prospect status into consideration. If not, Chris Colabello has this year's best case."

When I was in Cedar Rapids to watch the Kernels, I sat next to a scout for the Mets. I didn't get his name, but I asked him if there was too much hype for BB. He said "not enough" and said that while reports for him were great when he signed, he was far better less than a year later. It is early, but he could be the best ever to wear a Twins uni.

I kind of wish we could invoke some kind of media and fan injunction to stop any talk of Buxton until he actually plays a MLB game. As a fan of Minnesota sports, I've been conditioned to believe hype for my teams leads to utter disappointment and fate is going to come along at any moment and kick our would-be star square in the ding dong.

Please restore my faith and become what these karma-tempting prognosticators promise you will be Byron!

Fate would have to first catch up to Buxton, which might be impossible.

We hadn't seen a rookie like Trout, when it comes to all around game, in generations...and this year he's even better offensively. As hopeful as I am that Buxton ends up as good or better, I wish they'd stop these kind of comparisons.

Me too but it happens in every sport, anytime a gifted athlete comes along he's almost immediately annointed as the next greatest player ever, before ever even playing a pro game.

Media hype sells.

A year or two ago BA started to put risk rating on their prospects. The prospect gets a ceiling rating (20-80 on the scouting scale) and a chance to reach that ceiling rating (low/medium/high). Today in the chat Buxton got a 75 medium (no prospect has gotten 80). The fact he got 75 is special on its own but getting a medium for a 19 year old in A ball is nuts. While I agree no prospect should be compared to Trout after what he did last year it is impossible not to get excited about this kid.

Of course, before we get too excited about Buck inevitably leading the Twins to the Promised Land, a glance at where the Trout-led Angels are in the standings might be in order.

Booo! SD Buhr back me up here, Jim Crikket is being a downer again.

Most of the blame there can be assigned to the way underperforming, very expensive free agents they've signed.

In terms of team production, there is no reason to compare Trout and Buxton. Baseball is a team sport, so one great player will not lead to the promised land. The Angels screwed up by taking flyers on expensive, old free agents. The Twins don't even sign free agents! :) But comparing them on an individual level is accurate, and if Buxton can do what Trout has done, or close, along with the Twins providing the help around him that any player requires (which includes more prospects from our deep system finding success), we should be just fine.

You guys have no idea what you have in Buxton, as a Cubs fan I know teams tend to hype their own. But this is NOT hype on B.B., everything that is being said of the man-child is true. His plate approach, his contact, his speed, his arm, his coverage in CF, they are all well above average if not great. The only question I see is if he hits 20hrs or 30hrs...

I sure do wish he was a Cub...

We have no idea what we have in Buxton? Really? Glad to see you agree with what we've known about him for quite some time. He's an absolute beast.
