Berardino: Hicks Pushing For Callup?

John Bonnes

Recommended Posts

Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press had a couple of different tweets today about Aaron Hicks in Rochester:

"Big game for Aaron Hicks, including game tying triple in the 4th, helps lift ROC 3-2 over Scranton. Still 1 GB on final day of reg season."

"Aaron Hicks is 7 for 15 over last 4 games. Pushing for a callup?"

I wonder if any of our minor league gurus have any thoughts on this? I also wonder if it's too little too late, or if a postseason push led by Hicks could propel him back to Target Field (as well as the Red Wings to a playoff run.)

I think playing well in the post season, if they make it, would help his case. That said, this game is so mental and emotional that a hot streak, even just four games, would be something to promote and push so that he can end the year feeling good. I'm still doubtful that he gets a September call up, but he could.

To add to it though, 5 of those 7 hits have gone for extra bases. 3 doubles, and 2 triples.

James Beresford has hit .310 over the last 15 games. Eduardo Escobar has an 8 game hitting streak over which time he is hitting. 310. Jermaine Mitchell is hitting .350 over 60 at bats since August 6th.

The numbers don't mean anything. Watching Hicks play is everything. If there has been a true adjustment in approach and technique, it can be seen by the coaching staff. They can assess if it worthwhile giving Hicks some more playing time at the major league level.

The same should be said about every other player mentioned above. Their call up or addition to the 40 man must be supported by a skilled coaching staff watching them play. It can't be supported by numbers.

You forgot to mention that in those 4 games, Hicks as 4 Ks in 17 PAs. That is a 23.5% K rate, which is right between the 26.8% K rate he has in MLB this year and the 20.5% K rate he posted in 2011 and 2012.

Let's hold off on the promotion discussion until Hicks can get his K rate under control.

The only thing Hicks has going if his hot streak continues and Rochester makes the playoff is the dismal play by Mastro, Clete Thomas, and even Herrmann in the outfield. I would rather eventually give at bats at seasons end to Hicks then at vats to anyone who may not be here in 2014. Who won't be here in 2014 is the big question.

I would like to see Beresford get a callup and add. Looks like the Twins may also have to add a man from the Pirates 40-man.

Sadly, if Ramirez is disabled for the season, I would cut him loose. Tough, but necessary, call.

And even though he sucks, I would like to see Hermsen get a few innings in the big leagues...to further the decision on his 40-man status, rather than just cut him loose.

Hernandez pitching will make a call on DeVries, I think.......

I, for one, do not want to see another zero power middle infielder. We've seen Escobar, he is serviceable, Beresford can wait until there is an opening in 2014, if that. I'd like to see Hicks get some more big league at-bats. He still has considerably more upside than Ramirez, Thomas, Presley, and Mastroianni. So far, since his recall, Mastroianni has made more blunders than plays. He was okay last year, but he has been pretty bad this year (SSS).

Diamond, Tonkin, Parmelee, Escobar. Maybe De Vries. Possibly Gibson.

The only guy I would take out would be Tonkin, I'd add James Beresford on that list... guy is hitting over .300 with RISP as well as .304 for the season. I'm also not convinced that one good week for Hicks means that he'd be ready to get called up.

Tonkin has been less than impressive since rejoining the Red Wings... Diamond has been great though.

All of this is assuming that the Red Wings don't make the playoffs, they're up 9-1 as I type this and Norfolk/Durham is tied at 0.

How long could the playoffs potentially last for Rochester? I'm just interested in how the management views Rochester being in the playoffs since that is time some of the players could potentially be seeing with the Twins.

Assuming Willingham and hopefully Arcia get regular playing time the remainder of the season, I doubt Hicks gets a call up. Ryan just traded Morneau for his new "prize." He's going to try to prove that he made a good deal by limiting Gardenhire's options and keeping Pressley in the lineup daily. This is the guy he is going to try to sell to the public is a reasonable return for a much beloved Twin.

The Twins are already on spin control with this deal, I've heard Bremer imply twice already that Pressley only was in the minors because McCutcheon was blocking him, as if there aren't three outfield spots and he didn't get called up with a terrible RF situation in Pittsburgh. I've also heard both Ryan and Bremer refer to the 28-year-old as a "young man." Ryan will want him to play, not Hicks.
