Was on a few Pittsburgh Pirates boards today and the talk was about Morneau

If Morneau was traded to the Pirates who would you want back? They've got a few low level pitchers that sound interesting. Tyler Glasnow being one. Checkout bucsdugout and yahoo's pirates board for some fun reading.

I think Stolmy Pimentel might be a decent return. He's not highly thought of in the prospect world, but at 23, he's doing quite well for AAA Indianapolis. Saw him pitch a couple weeks back and he was hitting 95 late game. Still needs to work on control, and his K rate isn't ideal, but I think he could have a decent major league career.

After seeing the return for Drew, I no longer have a valid frame of reference for trade returns.

The Butera trade should not be factored into this at all. Ned Colletti has been overpaying for a lot of players the past few years. Neil Huntington is much more grounded in his personnel decisions.

No one claimed Morneau because of the $3M+ owed him and apparently the Twins don't want to pay Morneau to play for someone else. The Bucs could find a place for Morneau and winning their division should provide them with motivation to "overpay" for a an improvement at first base. I don't think it will happen, but the Pirates are probably the Twins' best hope.

I read this comment on BucsDugout and laughed:

"Jones for Morneau I completely understand all of the talk about Jones and Morneau being essentially the same player. However, since Jones is stuck in a pretty hefty slump and Morneau is finding his stride, would there be any value to a straight up trade between them? Morneau for Jones? We’d take on Morneau’s hefty salary and all, and the Twins get Jones. They’re not going anywhere this year, so why not take on Jones, who might do well with an off season.

This might already have been talked about, but I was just wondering the sense in that.

Thanks."

I don't think he knows Jones came from the Twins.

I do think hoping for a guy like Glasnow in return for Morneau is a pipedream, though that is the type of return I think Terry Ryan wants to see to actually move him.

Thank you robbie111. I've sometimes gone to other blogs and it's kind of fun.

Many of them bring up an important point; that Justin would make them stronger. I cannot see why TR wouldn't do this. The money will be gone at the end of the year anyway. If they want to resign him they can still do that.

P.S. The White Sox blogs are especially fun when they are losing.

If Justin will make them stronger, then are they willing to actually give up something? Or are they looking for a cheap (or free) rental for a couple of months?

What is they were?

Terry Ryan can say they are giving Justin a shot at the playoffs with a team that has pretty much NO playoff experience.

Play Colabello and Parmelee and see if someone surprises us.

If the Pirates gave us almost nothing and paid $1.5 million of Justin's contract that would be $1.5 million TR saved. He has to think that would be good.

Again, the money will be gone at the end of the year if we keep Justin. Pay him to play for the Bucs for the rest of the year and I believe we could get a future bullpen arm out of the deal.

I imagine the Twins would be willing to eat some to all of the Justin's salary for the right return. Just like they are willing to sign young talent to large signing bonuses. But, why pay $3 million just to have him on another team. If they player they are getting isn't worth that much of a signing bonus then I wouldn't trade for him either. That being said, I would most certainly pay half just to get someone that might contribute to the big league time next year.
