No, again, I thought we were talking about pitchers brought in to help this year's rotation, not future guys. Hence the question.

Yes. And it also involves considering what actions Ryan will or won't take, in toto, in pursuit of that goal, hence my supposition at how he's likely to proceed. Looks like another bleak year, built yet again, pretty exclusively on hope and wishes.

Do you really envision Ryan trading some of our top prospects for an established top notch kind of pitcher? I can't see him doing that.

Well, let me offer a correction. Twins need a future #1 pitcher. Doesn't have to be a star today. I can see Ryan trading the next Jason Kubel for the next Josh Johnson.

Johan Santana will not be pitching in 2014.

He had this same surgery, and last time it took him 18 months to recover.

Another 18 month recovery would put him out until October or November of 2014.

He says he plans to start throwing off the mound next month and plans to be ready for opening day. Obviously he could be over confident but last time I believe his surgery was supposed to have him back by mid-to-late season 2011 but he had a set-back and the Mets decided to shut him down as they stunk like usual.

Is it too early to wish for specific FA starters? Who is on your wish list and what do you think it will take contractually to sign them? I don't now what to think it will take w/Johnson. How about Santana and Hughes? You have to believe NY will retain Cano but it will mean a nice raise so will they pony-up for Hughes too?

You almost never see prospect for prospect trades.

I know the Rangers and Cards discussed a Profar for Taveras trade this spring, but of course in the end it went no where.

I'm sure there must have been a few, but off the top of my head I just can't recall any blockbuster prospect for prospect trades in recent history.

With his age, the number of innings that shoulder has thrown, and the fact its the second surgery on the same shoulder, I just can't see the recovery going smoothly with no setbacks, that is the reason it was so widely speculated to be probably career ending. The older your body gets the slower it heals, especially with multiple surgery's on the same location.

Not really in the mood to dig through all the bickering in here, and all the other FA threads, but has anyone been talking about Halladay in terms of a pitcher to go after in a high risk/high reward type of deal? I know a lot of folks on here seem to be all about Johnson and I've seen some chatter about Lincecum and Hughes, but feel like Doc hasn't had much mention, and thats someone I'd love to see us take a gamble on. Obviously a ton hinges on how his rehab continues to go, but if the man is healthy, what do we have to lose? Worst case scenario is we throw some money down the drain. Best case scenario is we get a bonafide ace. More realistic scenario is somewhere in the middle and he'd still be a gigantic upgrade.

Phillies starting pitcher Roy Halladay took a big step forward in his recovery from shoulder surgery Thursday. In a rehab start for the Gulf Coast Phillies (Rookie ball), Halladay worked six innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs and three walks. He struck out four (MiLB.com box score). It's tough to get a good read at Halladay's stuff from looking at a Rookie-level box score. That's the lowest level of regular-season professional baseball. Perhaps the most important takeaway is that he was able to throw 87 pitches in a game. That's a big workload for a guy attempting to return from shoulder surgery.

Halladay's next start, surmises Phillies beat writer Matt Gelb, could come Tuesday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. At that point, we'll be able to get a much better read on Halladay's status.

Which is why I suggested he'd be the Twins ace pitching right handed.

I think he pitches again but is no longer effective. Full disclosure though, he says his recovery has gone much better this time around.

So there you have it:

1. Deduno

2. Albers

3. Gibson

4. Corriea

5. Flotsam from AAA

NO way I can see that rotation starting 2014. Albers #2, he has thrown 17 innings. Deduno our #1, no way I can see that happening, he is still maybe a #4. You look at that group you have maybe a 3 #4 starters, 2 total rookies. No MLB team except maybe the Marlins or Astros would roll with that. Gibson, Correia, Deduno are probably shoe ins, unfortunately they are shoe ins because we don't have other options. Gibson is the only guy I am comfortable with, and that is because it is his time, should be #3 or #4 starter. The Twins have try the FA market again, and maybe Meyer, May, Albers can continue to get better, but they shouldn't be in the opening day rotation. It is really going to irritate Twins fans if they put out a worse rotation than the previous 2 years.

I just looked through the list of 2014 FA starting pitchers and it is really thin. The Yankees will resign Kuroda and Santana is going to get an insane deal because there are so few options. I can't imagine Garza back here and if the reports are true, we don't want him in our clubhouse with a bunch of young players.

Free agency is going to be tough. I hate to say it but our best bet/hope is that Diamond and Worley return to form. We can hope that Albers location, decption, changing speeds, etc translates to this level. I guess there has been enough lefties of this type in the past that we can have reasonable hope.

The best case scenario would be Meyer finishing the year strong, going to AAA and dominating and getting a mid-year promotion. That's my wish for the day!
