Article: Burton Rewarded For Sticking With His Stuff

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure why the changeup isn't in the arsenal of most pitchers. It seems like an easy one to pick up and gain command of, with the same throwing motion as the bread-and-butter pitch, unlike the pitches that require torque on the arm.

It seems like an easy pitch to master in theory but plenty of pitchers have struggled mastering it. One reason is that in amateur baseball (high school, legion), pitchers just need a fastball and curve, they rarely take the opportunity to work on a change-up. Additionally, it is a feel pitch, meaning it takes more finesse than a fastball would despite sharing the same arm action.

Vance Worley is one example of a professional who never quite mastered this pitch.

Does anyone know if he is working on it now? It would be a shame for the staff to allow him to leave that for The offseason.

I don't know if he was working on it, but IIRC he is currently out with an injury.

I would say it's nearly a requisite that you have a four seam fastball and some form of changeup. I think the changeup is the best pitch in baseball and there are so many variations of it (circle, straight, or even Burton's splange) that you're bound to find one that works. There are probably more versions of a changeup than any other pitch.
