Is Brunansky getting a free pass?

Recommended Posts

It's one thing to put more blame on the players, but what the hell is the point of a coach if they don't deserve any of the blame?

The Twins stink at everything offensively. They can't get on-base, they don't hit for power, they strikeout too often for a bad on-base team.

I have no idea how much or how soon a hitting coach can influence a group of players but I think there are some interesting tidbits in Berardino's latest Twins Now blog entry: Minnesota Twins: Twinsights on RISP issues, Royals' young offense » Twins Now

Note both the Twins RISP problems (something that is not unique to this season although it seems worse this year) and Correia's comments about the improvements in the Royals' hitting.

I don't think complete blame can be put on him, but I don't certainly don't think he is without fault. How much he takes the blame is difficult because instructing MLB hitters is probably more difficult than instructing MiLB hitters. Bruno will have to adjust too.

I don't know if even the players have any idea.

Is Bruno giving them the right instructions and they're just not executing? Is this really as good as any of them are going to get?

Unfortunately we may have to wait and see how some players do elsewhere to see if we need an upgrade at the hitting coach position.

Well Gardy gets a free pass because he doen't have decent players to work with so I guess that would cover Bruno as well. After 195 loses in 2 years they decided that the base coaches and bullpen coach were to blame. After this year of likely 90 + losses a few members of the ground crew may need to go.

Not a lot of accountibility in the Twins way.

Wait, I thought he was still instructing MiLB hitters?

Sort of... but they really just overhauled the staff without cutting loose the two center-pieces. If they fired coaches based on who's to blame, we'd still have our original first base coach.

SPRING TRAINING - Look at what the addition of Bruno has done?!?! Aaron Hicks was AA and he leads the team in average! ALL HAIL BRUNO

8/1/13- Man, WTF? I thought Bruno was supposed to improve the team's hitting?!?

Keep your pants on people, I wonder what they whine about when it comes to royals or pirate fans in the past......

I think this is less about Brunansky and more a commentary about selective outrage. Last year there were many who were vigorously calling for Vavra to be fired because of offensive troubles, and to be replaced by somebody like Brunansky. The offense this year, while somewhat improved, is not significantly better than last year but there has been silence so far about Brunansky's role.

Well, the problem is that the offense of the team actually...sucks. The lineup offers no protection or fear. It is the players. If Bruno is to be judged, it it how an Arcia or Hicks readapts. Hicks has failed miserably. Parmelee just can't hit major league pitching. Or is its Bruno's fault not working enough with Chris. But overall, the hitters are suffering because there are so many bad hitters in the lineup. Willingham slumped bigtime because he's hurt. Doumit doesn't have his act together. Justin can't clutch hit anymore. Mauer gets on base because of his his bat once a game and either knocks someone in or scores. But the Twins offense is dismal. Name the names of the guys who would start on the field, today, for any other team in tee majors...today...not next year or last year but today. And where would they hit in someone else's lineup. Everyone would be a backup infielder, fourth outfielder or slop hitter except...Joe. Even Justin would be hard-pressed to bat 6-7 in any team's lineup. No one else would get a starting job. That is what the Twins have today. Not even Doumit would be a starter at DH, just that bench bat, second catcher. Arcia may break that mold. But Hicks, any other team would've sent him down months/s ago. Bruno should get a second year, but whomever you hire as a manager should have the ability to totally clean house!
