My favorite part is that this was the last deal announced. Like, they were haggling over Drew freaking Butera as the clock ticked down...2:58...2:59. Meanwhile the dozen teams calling about Morneau and Perkins got a busy signal.

(I know that's not how it actually works)

More likely it was the last deal because the Dodgers had a half dozen other backup catchers they were targeting and Butera was their security blanket.

My guess is they were waiting to see if anybody was going to offer something for Doumit, and when that didn't pan out they allowed Butera to go.

From AAA journeyman to being just a passed ball to the cup away from being the everyday catcher for a contender. What a long, strange trip it's been.

I don't think he'll be their everyday catcher.

Per Tim Brown, Yahoo Sports:

It would appear Butera will provide Dodgers organizational depth at catcher, perhaps be 3rd catcher in September.

Just meant he could end up the number 2 catcher in that weak cast of characters, and AJ Ellis taking a bouncer in the store would mean Son of Sal could end up playing 4 times a week. No, did not mean that Butera could get hit in the junk, suddenly develop the ability to hit, and shoot to the top of the depth chart.

Butera will be an Isotope (Alberquerque), maybe getting called with the Dodgers in September, denied arbitration and becoming a free agent in October and signing a minor league contract with the Rochester Red Wings in November.

As far as Rochester goes, I think that Rohlfing and Pinto both might come up to join Eric Fryer, with Rohlfing in a Doumit/Herrmann type of a role. Rochester is actually having a winning season this year and they will push...

It will be nice to see the Red Wings adding production at catcher. Not sure what the stats are for starting catchers there, but I imagine it to be pretty terrible. Pinto improves their playoff odds by a reasonable margin.

Dave St. Peter: "Terry..TERRY! TERRY, WAKE UP!!!" *shakes Terry Ryan*

Terry Ryan: *wipes drool* "Whaa?"

DSP: "Terry, it's a quarter to three and we still haven't made any deadline trades yet!!!"

TR: "But..it's Tuesday, isn't it?"

DSP: "NO! It's Wednesday the 31st!"

TR: *now alert* "Oooooh, I did it again. Get to the phones, everyone! We have no time to haggle for a good trade! Anything, and I mean ANYTHING goes!!!!!"

TR: "Two years of being sellers while accomplishing nothing looks bad to the fanbase! We have to create the illusion or else they'll try to screw with my nap schedule"

DSP: "No...They wouldn't dare."

TR: *nods with eyes bulging*

DSP: "This is more serious than I expected! I should have nudged you earlier instead of.... never mind."

TR: "What?"

DSP: "It's not important. Forget it."

*room snickers quietly*

TR: *doesn't realize his left eyebrow is shaven*

*silence ensues for a few minutes before the phone rings*

TR: "2:59!!! Hello...Los Angeles?"

LAD: "Yes, we would like to offer you.."

TR: "Done. Now tell me what the deal was."

LAD: "Well, it involves Drew Butera."

*entire room let's out a huge sigh of relief*

So.....who's the new whipping boy? Going to be a dearth of good jokes now that "Son of Sal" has left us.

Goodbye old friend.

Based on past TD posts I'd say there will be no shortage of potential targets: Parm, Plouffe, Hammer, Dozier, Morny, Flori, Hicksie, and of course Mauer and his giant contract. At one time or another someone on here is lighting them up for something. Oh yeah, and our entire SP staff.

Then, of course, theres also the entire front office and coaching staff.

So many candidates, so little time.

My attempt to make a joke that the PTBNL in the Butera trade would be the Dodger's mascot was foiled when I learned that the Dodgers do not have a mascot.

I was going to post a picture and everything...

That's probably how it went. The deal was done before either side checked on the mascot part.

You're all chuckling now but just wait until mid-August when Coletti calls up Ryan, yells "TERRY, YOU BEEN PUNK'D", hangs up, and announces that the PTBNL is Drew Butera.

Thanks for stealing my joke from two hours ago you lazy bastard....

I think the most important question is...will Butera out hit the Dodgers pitchers?

This is a fairly serious question.

With Greinke hitting .400 and Ryu hitting .216......... I doubt it. At least he won't out hit these two.

I glad in a way that he was traded, mostly because he won't get ripped on by Twins "fans" anymore (or as much). I feel bad for the guy. Is a liability in the lineup? Of course. At the same time he is a great defensive catcher - his era catching is top stuff. He makes pitchers better. I'm he has worked his butt of trying to be a better hitter- but it hasn't worked out. You would think from the comments that Twins fan have given on Drew Butera, that he killed and ate all thier kids or something
