Don't forget Mastro is DHing today for the first time, as well. At this point, 0-2 with a SF.

To the TD minor league staff experts, any word on the plans for Wimmers for the rest of 2013? Does he have a decent shot at a Kyle Gibson rehab-type year and pitch in the AFL come October?

Thanks for that site. Affiliations. I've been looking up each league scoreboard for the Twins minor league Box scores. This will make it much simpler.

I'm not too impressed with E-town and GCL Twins teams this season. sub-average.

I'm guessing AFL is likely. Gibson is a different scenario. Wimmers lost more than a year of his development thus far due to medical staff failures and steve blass disease and has not pitched above A+. I think Wimmers starts in A+ or AA next season and will not be protected from the rule V draft unless there are several extra roster spots available.

disagree. the e-town line-up is abysmal but they have a collection of interesting arms, starting with the tres latinos. the gcl roster has a bunch of organizational filler but with stewart, thorpe, minier and gonsalves, you have a nice collection of high end talent and a good group of mid tier guys in navaretto, gonzalez, zazueta and fernandez. you could point to more guys on that roster who really don't have a shot over previous years, but the ceilings are as good if not better than recent years.

If he continues to progress at GCL, shouldn't he be physically ready to pitch at Ft Myers or New Britain in August? He's on the NB DL roster and he did pitch one AA game last year before he was shut down.

It looks like 3 spaces would have to be made available to avoid Rule 5 exposure, Kepler, Vargas and Wimmers. I see well more than 3 spots opening up on the 40-man in 2014, but would anyone draft Vargas or Kepler with the intention of keeping either all year on a major league roster? OTOH, Wimmers seems like a very small possibility (especially if he performs well for the remainder of this year and in the AFL), perhaps with the intention of making a trade for him with the Twins, or losing him to the Twins when/if things didn't work out.

I'd guess Wimmers will likely be sent to FTM at some point later this year. Though I'm not sure how many starts he's going to get there. Gibson was on a pretty similar time table last year and appeared in 9 games in the GCL, 2 in Fort Meyers, and 2 in Rochester where he was pitching when he first got hurt. Wimmers will likely see something similar, which means he won't be in Fort Meyers till September.

To answer your other question, Kepler and Vargas should be protected, though for some reason I didn't think Vargas needed to be protected this year. I think you can make a case for not protecting Wimmers, though it will be a bit of a tough decision. There are some other names that need to be added as well, though I'm not sure offhand... I think technically Goodrum and Rosario can wait another year. Darnell will likely be protected and potentially (though not likely) Angel Morales and DB Romero.

There was a thread on this a while back, but I cannot seem to find it.

I think we would lose Wimmers to a poor team if we did not protect him. Some team would claim him, stash him in the bullpen and lose a year of him with hope for the future in 2-3 years Not as worried about Vargas as current clubs are constructed it is hard to stash a hitter. Twins should have enough spots for most of the players that need to be protected. Just do not make a mistake.

All the aforementioned guys need to be protected. Teams like the Cubs (just guessing with Theo there), Marlins, Astros would be willing to stash a guy for a year if they thought they will get something out of them in the future.

As for Wimmers. I don't see the point in limiting him to A+ this season. Age and the fact he needs to be protected on the 40 man next year should play into this. He has to see AA this season IMO. Even if he struggles some, that is where he needs to end the year and start the year next season. Hopefully he will get some AFL time similar to Gibson too. If things go right, perhaps we could get a look with the Twins by the end of next season.

Terry Ryan said this spring that Wimmers was on the same rehab plan as Gibson. As far as placing him in the minors, I would guess that is different because Wimmers has only one appearance beyond A+. With the Rock Cats out of playoff contention, I don't think it would hurt at all to see if Alex could handle AA this year. As far as protecting Wimmers, if he does well the rest of the season and is okay or better in the AFL, I think he could well be claimed and I don't think it is an overall good for the player. Wimmers won't be ready for the big leagues next year and being stashed would only slow the development of a guy who has already been delayed for 2+ years and was a college arm.
