Article: Gary Lucas shares his passion for pitching

Recommended Posts

Great piece, Seth. It captures Lucas' personality and his devotion to his work and, in particular, to his players. The guy just always seems to be working with his pitchers either one on one or in groups.

Gary's also always has made himself available to talk to media-types after games and answer any pitching-related questions.

He's just a class act, all around, as your interview captures well.

Great article. Thanks. It shows that there is a lot more in the development of these players than what the score boxes of the last 10 games show. Sometimes we look at the numbers of the last games and ask why this guy or that guy doesn't get promoted? And this article shows that there are a lot more things that they want to achieve with this players, things that are not necessarily reflected in the numbers, at least in the short term.

Great article Seth...I was fascinated by all the different things a minor league coach has to deal with. We have to remember that these are still kids in their early 20s at Cedar Rapids and they have to absorb a lot of stuff as they try to make their way up to the Twins.

Very nice piece. Would love to see this in the Twins mag......not sure if people realize the talent they have coaching in the minors (plus, these guys move around sometimes from season to season). Jim Shellenback is another guy who has been in the system until he retired. The big thing is the number of guys that pass by these coaches each year, and in the dozen years alone Gary has been with the Twins farm department...and it is new faces every year.

I wonder if Gary Lucas ever sits pitchers down with hitters to discuss what each one does well, how a pitcher tips his pitches, how a batter looks vulnerable to the outside curve, etc. Feedback from the other side of the equation might be valuable.
