Article: What is reasonable return for Twins' veterans?

Recommended Posts

i'm nervous about trading. Willingham may not be getting as many hits as some but he has more home runs than anyone else on the team this season and that counts for something. I don't really know where the weak spot is on the team. This second game with the Indians certainly gave the impression that it was the pitching's fault but in the first game it was the offense that just didn't materialize. I don't know that there is a magic trade that can be made right now.

I was thinking about this afterwards and I've alluded to this idea on another thread: what do you think of the idea of simply moving around the roster as it currently stands? For example why not try Casey Fien as a starter? He seems to have done a decent job as a reliever and I'm sure he could last more innings than Walters did last night.

I don't expect to much in trades to happen this summer. Most of the young prospects you named will probably never make the majors. If they make the majors, they will likely have little impact. If that is the kind of return you are going to get, why make the trade?

I think the Twins are trying to figure out who, on the current roster, and some of the AAA roster, figure into the short and long term plans. Ideally, you trade the ones who don't, but of course, you have to find someone who wants them. Willingham might go, but if all you are going to get is a single A pitcher with the possible future of a major league middle reliever, why make the trade? The Twins have guys like that. You either need to get more or someone that is closer to the majors. Perhaps Melotakis has higher upside than that, but still.

Last year the Twins traded Liriano for Hernandez and Escobar. They are both useful players and maybe quite useful to the Twins for a few years. Still, I think I would rather keep Willingham if you can't get a better return than that for him. To some degree, I would rather keep Morneau as well, unless you can get higher upside talent. Morneau is different because he will likely be gone at the end of the year. Still, trading him for marginal talent, doesn't make much sense to me.

Trading Perkins, Plouffe, Burton and even Parmelee doesn't make much sense until/unless you have a comparable or better talent to replace them. You really have to be blown away which doesn't really happen to often.

Glen Perkins at this point I call a proven closer. He typically dominates, frequently strikes guys out, and when he occasionally blows a save, he comes right back in the next outing and and dominates again. That shows that he not only has the raw stuff to close, he also has the short memory that a closer needs.

Other than that, a pretty good evaluation of trade values.

Thanks! I agree that Perkins is great, but I wonder if the league views him as "proven."

As for Herrmann and Doumit, Herrmann would only need to produce an OPS+ of 95 to match Doumit. That wouldn't be unheard of.

I think the Twins need to part with two of the three of Morneau, Doumit, and Willingham. Morneau's value has diminished because of the lack of power he has displayed and he has an expiring contract, so don't expect a top prospect. Willingham and Doumit are signed through 2014 with manageable contracts, which would increase their value. However, Hammer hasn't hit very well this year and is being dogged by injuries. Doumit has also not put up great numbers, but he is healthy and he is a catcher. I think his value at the deadline will be surprisingly high.

I think there are teams that would not put Doumit behind the plate. The entire value of both players is their declining but still useful bat. They are league bottom defenders. They do not run well negating some of the positives from drawing extra walks. They have history of injuries. They actually might be easier to trade if the team did not have to take on next year's burden. The margin that their bat makes up for their defense is getting smaller.

I'd trade some bullpen guys if the price was right, always seems like a team or two over pays for a reliever. Same with starters, if someone wants Corriea or Diamond, or Sam Deduno then fine.

I wouldn't trade Perkins as he is a hometown kid, good closer and is young enough where he will still be around in a year or two when this team can turn it around.

Mourneau- the problem with him, is I feel unless he brings a decent return which I doubt, it won't look good to the casual fans. Keeping him for the rest of the year might be the best choice. Unless of course some team is willing to overpay.

Willingham- He's got another year, so its not like we have to trade him, he could get more over the off-season, I thought they should have traded him last year, he hasn't been healthy, he has struggled. But again its one of those if he gets a decent return, go for it.

Doumit- I'd trade him if the offer was right, he's alright, but he's awful in the OF, not great as a C. Again though under contract for next year as well, so its not a firesale type of situation.
