Hicks to DL, Arcia recalled

Recommended Posts

The Minnesota Twins have placed center fielder Aaron Hicks on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring strain which he suffered in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Nationals.

To replace him, the Twins will recall Oswaldo Arcia from Rochester. After being demoted back to Rochester at the end of May, Arcia has hit .218/.353/.418 with three home runs and two doubles in 68 plate appearances.

Huh. So Herrmann is backup CFer again. I still don't know where Arcia plays, especially now that Parmelee & Doumit are hitting.

I can actually see Arcia getting a few reps in center as well. Can't remember who said it, but one Twins staffer mentioned that he is capable of playing there (capable is one thing, successfully is another).

Id have rather seen Antuan Richardson (is that his name?), I think.

Richardson isn't on the 40-man though. So that would cause a roster move. I'm assuming that they confident that Hicks injury should be completely healed after the 15-days.

Parmelee is hitting? Yeah, his May was decent (.750 OPS), and much better than his April, but he's off to slow start in June again. He needs to AVERAGE a .750 OPS monthly, and so far, that's looking like his peak.

If health allows, I'd throw Arcia into center and leave Parmelee alone in right, but I can't say Parmelee has really locked anything down.

Starting to get a lot of bats for the corner OF/DH spots. When is it time to disucss if the Twins should become sellers?

Not until Willingham starts hitting the ball instead of using the ol' lean-into-the-pitch strategy to get hit himself.

Well, adding Richardson could have merely meant removing Hermsen from the 40-man or making that other oh so hard decision, apparently, involving Butera.

Any word on Ramirez?

Herrmann and Arcia likely in CF, with Thomas still as the backup. I would hope that they never have Arcia in CF with Willingham in LF at the same time.

I could see some manager/GM tension with this call. Ryan surely wants to see the youngsters defense be damned, but Gardy will likely want the only guy who is a competent centerfielder if there's a chance his job is on the line.

What you're saying makes perfect sense, and yet it's hard to believe that it's really like that.

If Ryan is holding Gardenhire accountable for wins and losses with a pitching staff composed almost entirely of spare parts, then Gardenhire may end up being better off somewhere else anyway, whether it's his choice or not.

Yeah, they did the same thing with Plouffe for the calf strain......progress, I'll take it.

This is actually an area where the awareness level in the front office has improved dramatically. Meyer in New Britain also.

Actually, I hope Clete is designated after his next 0-4 and Richardson is recalled to take his place. Clete will be in center most of the fifteen days that Hicks is out. While Richardson wouldn't be a better CF than Thomas, he is a leadoff hitter and until Hicks or someone can take that role, the Twins biggest need right now on offense is a leadoff hitter.

Yeah, except that he has 20 range, and has never played center field at any level. What could possibly go wrong. See Cuddyer in center.

I kinda agree with Jorgenswest here. I have no idea if Parmelee is a better option then Herrmann because I havent seen much of Herrmann but I will say this.... Whoever graded Parmelee at 20 range has no business scouting and giving out grades.

Parmelee has exceeded every defensive expectation time and time again. He isn't a perfect option in CF because he hasn't played CF but we don't really have a perfect CF option with Hicks out.

I have watched Arcia play and he needs a ton of outfield work. IMO Arcia should not be an option in CF. Stick him in a corner and let him rake at the plate.

I prefer Parmelee in RF because his arm is fantastic and he plays the wall like he has played it his whole life... I don't fear Parmelee defensively at all in any facet of defense. He's solid.

If the Twins are serious about winning as many games as possible, they need to try Richardson. His OBP is good at Rochester (SSS) and was outstanding at New Britain. If he could get on at a good clip, he would provide the Twins with a lead off alternative. No other CF candidate above Buxton has leadoff skills.

The Twins leadoff hitters are batting .170/.225/.205 for the year.

Richardson is batting .292/.443/.365 and that OBP is not at all out of the ordinary for him.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like a no brainer. They need a CF-er and they need a leadoff man.
