I remember when Opening Day was Opening Day

Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember in college skipping classes four years in a row to drive to Shea (one year it snowed) just to see Mets Opening Days. I dont think I missed one starting from when Shea opened (I was in High School) till 76 when I moved to DC.

Its not the same now with the stupid games in Japan, the staggered opening days so that two open today, a few tomorrow and some Friday.

Fire Bud Selig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mind the Japan games considering it is more popular there. Look at all the other sports. NFL has games in London, NHL starts in Europe. It's the way the world is now. Everything is global. I would rather have all the other games start on one day. I never liked the idea of having one game open the season a day or too early. NFL does it too. It's all about the $$$ though...

Sorry Thrylos. I meant that they've ruined it by dribbling the games out little by little. I don't think there IS an Opening Day.

I don't mind the Japan games so much, although I'm not sure why they had to happen a week or so ago or whenever it was. But I LOVED Opening Day, when all or at least the vast majority of teams went out and played ball. Now we've got one game tonight, another handful tomorrow, and a then more on Friday.

It sucks.

Yeah... I get the point (esp after Seattle and Oakland started playing ST games after their openning day) but opening day for me is when the Twins play their first game. That would be friday :)

The Tour that Oakland and Seattle made to Japan was odd, I didn't understand why MLB wanted any of those games to count in the Official Standings, rather than just having them all as exhibitions. It's probably the same reasoning behind having the All-Star game "count" - that somehow making the games affect the standings will make them more marketable or interesting to the fans.

But I agree with Thrylos98's sentiment - Opening Day is the Twins' first official game to me, too. Major League Baseball has a large enough audience and teams spread out enough that focusing Opening Day events locally must make more sense to MLB so they maximize viewers.

I agree, I liked having Opening Day on a Monday with maybe one game on Sunday night to kick things off, with all the other teams starting the same day. It really was my favorite day of the year, and like all of you I would take the day off work and either watch all the games on TV or go to the Twins game if it was at home. I am just glad the Twins start on Friday so they have games on consecutive days, as opposed to the teams who open Thursday and then take Friday off before resuming the series.

Well, now I feel like an inadequate Twins fan!! Of course the Twins' opener is the one that matters and that's Opening Day. But I definitely thought of MLB's Opening Day as a holiday, with the frenzy of so many games around the league, similar to March Madness's first day. Now it's just so diffused.

Please please let Mauer hit .350 again and Morneau jack 30-40. Please. And count me among the people who like Casilla and really hope he can put together a full season of his ability. If we get those things and a bullpen which outshines the gloomy expectations, 85+ wins and a hopeful September are headed our way.

GO TWINS

We baseball fans can no longer call it our favorite "holiday!" Makes me sick.

Sure we can. Just pick your team's day (which had better be Friday if you're here:)). If it makes you sick, that means no need to fake it.

Thanks, MLB, for ruining Opening Day.

For as long as I could remember, opening day was always the day after the Reds' opening day. One extra day doesn't really bother me. If I was a n A's or Mariners fan, I wouldn't like starting the season and then going back to spring training.

Agree with this. That opening full day on Monday was great. Baseball on TV from noon until past midnight. Nowadays? Tonight's game, which just ended (9:00 pm) is the only game today. Then tomorrow there are only 7 games, only 2 are on TV I can get and boy, I'm just stoked to watch the Nationals/Cubs game. NOT!
