Sano and Buxton Bet

Recommended Posts

I just made a bet with a buddy of mine that Miguel Sano would not be called up before September of 2014 and Byron Buxton would not be called up before September of 2015. Also I said Buxton would be the higher rated prospect of the too next season according to MLB.com. Who's going to win?

Okay, gaming it out. Sano ends the season in double A (with or without a cup of coffee); he begins Spring Training in competition for a roster spot. Buxton rises to High A this year, and begins 2014 in double A.

Given the real scenario above, it's quite possible both are up in 2014 if their play dictates such. These players will not be rushed, but they won't be held back.

Anyone(s) that thinks the Twins aren't in the business of winning as soon as possible are fools.

God bless them for attempting to align their lightening strikes. Seriously, fans.

Sano will be up before September 2014, July 2014 at the latest.

Buxton, you may be right. That'll be close.

Buxton already is rated higher by most prospect types, so unless something strange happens, he'll stay higher.

Buxton should be up well before Sept 2015. Assuming both Sano/Buxton get promoted this month then Buxton will be a 1/2 year ahead of Sano. Additionally Buxton doesn't have the big issues that could slow him down (K's and defense). I would not be shocked if Buxton started in AA next season.

I am usually conservative with prospects but Buxton (and Sano) are that good. And I will counter the 'the Twins don't promote quickly' crowd before they even get started. The Twins haven't had anything close to these two since Mauer. The only guys that were tearing up the minors in that time were Kubel and Arcia (that I recall) and they didn't stick to the one level per year so called plan for HS/int'l players with them.

This... Makes me wish that Gray had fallen. He'd have fit right into this... Stewart will likely take a bit longer.

To answer the original OP, for the most part he's right. Next fall for Sano and the following for Buxton is likely. I suspect both get promotions in a couple of weeks. Next year's team is going to be more the extended tryout for some of the guys. I fully expect Gibson, Hicks and Arcia to start in Minnesota for 2014 with Meyer and May eventually getting their call up after a stint in Rochester. Pinto will likely get a tryout for the #2 catcher. Rosario should remain pretty close to Sano in terms of his promotion schedule as well.

The problem as I see it is at that they still need a SS, some pitching, and possibly a 1B or a stop gap outfielder.

HHmmm well me thinks if they wanted to win , they would have signed a couple quality free agents, you know if they wanted to win....maybe they are in the business of winning on the cheap side would be a more accurate statement

Other than blind pessimism, there's nothing to suggest Sano won't be up before 9/14.

Buxton's a little more of an unknown because he's played so few games on the professional level. But if you've been paying attention, the safe money on him is well before 9/15.

Yeah I believe I made a mistake in the bets. I didn't think it through very well. But the person I was betting with believed that if hicks was to get hurt this year that Buxton would be in line to get the call-up. So I obviously shouldn't have given him as much of a time line. Oh well.

You will probably be right that Buxton will be rated higher, but I also agree that barring injury you are a little tardy in your projections for when they'll first see the majors.
