Plouffe is in and Colabello optioned to Rochester. No real surprise except it could have been Herrmann.

But then we wouldn't have had that oh-so-valuable 3rd catcher that Gardy has been pining for all season and just rewarded himself with.

Herrmann is as much there for OF reasons (and backup CF) as catching. He's Wilkin's replacement.

At first glance, Wilkin seems the better hitter, better outfielder and better translator....

but maybe that's just me....

I'm glad Plouffe is back, but seriously?! We keep a player who can't hit in AAA over a guy who kills it?

Seriously, he did the same surreptitious move with Butera last year, just sooner. It's Gardy's safety blanky. What with all the recent flurry of roster activity, I am surmising that Gardy thought he could slip this one through without much blowback.

Colabello struck out in 6 of 11 plate appearances. The Twins got their feelgood story and ran with it as far as actual playing ability allowed.

Any team would send a guy to AAA with that kind of a track record.

Colabello will get another shot. More than anything though, it comes down to CF. Colabello might be able to handle a corner spot, but Hermann apparently can handle CF, and our other backup CF right now is Parmelee.

Have no fear though, Hermann will likely get sent down when Ramirez gets his head screwed back on right.

If Hermann is the choice as 3rd C since he can also play OF.....tell me again why MN didnt DFA Butera instead of Benson??

You don't just DFA historically amazing defensive players like Son of Sal.

and at second glance, Wilkin is still on the DL with a concussion, so having a replacement seems like a good idea.

The Butera obsession amazes me. But not Gardy's - this forum's.

Herrmann is the only centerfield backup on the 25-man roster. It has nothing to do with being a 3rd catcher. Unless there is some other injury, he'll be sent down when the other backup centerfielder, Wilkin Ramirez, returns from the concussion DL in a couple of days.

Sorry, I apparently was unclear- what I meant was that Hermann can better serve as a replacement for Ramirez, and since Ramirez is on the DL having Hermann on the team is an excellent idea. I was not criticizing the move, personally.

Colabello coming back to Minneapolis. Either a) Plouffe goes on the DL for his calf or B) the Twins are dropping a pitcher after one good start. My money is on a.

Has to be A-Plouffe to DL. Otherwise Colabello has to spend 10 days in Rochester before being eligible for recall.

In which case, "temporary replacement" would have been the correct phraseology...

of course, the fact that Hermann hasn't played CF (for all of 11 games- and this is the sum total for his entire career!) since 2010 in A ball, doesn't make Hermann as the obvious choice for CF replacement, all the more curiouser....

and that when called up, he goes in to his first game, not as the RF, but as a Catcher...

Hermann is just keeping that 3rd C seat warm for Drew.....probably wont even have to do a rehab stint before getting his spot back

+ 1 Book it, no need for him to start the season on the 25-man, what with Liriano gone and Deduno hurt...... but you can't hope to stop the LPW from his rightful bench seat forever, SOS will soon be back for some personal Deduno caddying.

While it's been encouraging to see Hicks do a little better in May, the April disaster makes his recent performance somewhat illusory. His K% for the month is 25%, only slightly down from 31% in April. His BB% has dropped somewhat alarmingly, to only 5.4%, from the April number of 13.3%--- which at the time, became the main rallying point for keeping him up.

What you have in Hicks's May numbers at the plate is a slightly better Adam Dunn (Hicks May OBP of .250 vs. Dunn's .247////Hicks May ISO .276 vs. Dunn's .244).

Wonder if this is the same calf issue that was nagging at Plouffe in spring training. If so, that's pretty worrisome.

I can't recall for sure, but didn't certain folks tell us that without a medical degree, we were simply not allowed to either "wonder", "worry" or speculate why a guy who went on the DL for a concussion, is just now finding out: 1)either his calf hasn't healed properly since late February- or, 2) that he has mysteriously injured the other calf while rehabbing....?

Since I don't have my medical license current, I will abide by the strictures..... I won't wonder, worry or speculate... but can I at least be curious?

Be curious all you want. Blindly scapegoat the medical staff too, if that makes you feel better. I'm sure it's their fault.

Thank you for this helpful feedback. I will attempt to be more precise in any future posts about minor league replacements for players placed on the disabled list by referring to the changes as temporary, unless any of them are named Wally Pipp.

Nick, your response was the equivalent of "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain."

As my comment was neither blind or scapegoating, nor did it make me feel better, I suggest you try again.

I believe it was you, yourself just several posts ago on this very thread, who wondered aloud if this calf injury is a recurrence from his February one..... therefore, aren't we all a little curious at this strange turn of events?
