Twins eager to bring Arcia back??

Recommended Posts

From Gardy

"I didn't want to send Arcia down," Gardenhire said. "I like watching him swing and the way he goes about his business. He's a young kid with things to learn and is swinging a little crazy right now, but there's a chance when he walks up that he'll hit a home run, and I enjoy that part of it. So he'll be back."

Oswaldo is still 2nd to Mauer (laughable as any criticism of the team) in slugging.

Seth got it correct when he stated Arcia needed 5 days in minors to get a 7th yr of service time, so they sat Arcia for a few games to make up a reason. Problem really is that Justin is the block to Arcia as they also want to figure out if Parmelee can play & take over @ 1B (or platoon w/Colabello).

Or Arcia comes back when Plouffe comes back and Dozier gets demoted?

Wouldn't have much of a problem with this if they were consistent. Arcia is sent down when he starts struggling yet Hicks is allowed to be terrible for months? If they don't view Hicks as a piece for the future thats fine, I just feel like we deserve to see someone like Clete Thomas that might actually show some signs of life.

Come on. This sentence only reinforces the validity of their approach. The Twins have other viable options to plug in at the corner OF spots. Clete Thomas??

I believe Julio Borbon was available on waivers a couple of weeks back.

I know he's nothing special, but he could have held down CF for a few weeks in a pinch to give them more flexibility with Hicks.

By not going out and getting a CF option, it shows they don't WANT to send him down, even if they could.

And BTW, I'm fine with that, but just thought I'd point that out.

He's having a great year. Regardless if he fits into the future with the Twins, I'm 100% confident he would out-play Hicks right now (not really that hard). Give Hicks some needed time in AAA and come back up when he's turned things around.

Also, you want to give starts to AAAA journeymen Deduno and Walters over Gibson yet letting Thomas have a cup of coffee while a struggling rookie gets demoted is crazy? You make no sense. The inconsistencies in approaches has been a huge factor in being one of the worst teams in baseball for 3 years now. If you have a mantra, you shouldn't pick and choose when to implement it.

Borbon was claimed before the Twins had a chance at him.

He's a 29-year-old in Triple-A. You really want a Willingham/Clete/Parmelee OF?

He's having a great year at the plate, but I don't know if I'd call him a viable CF option, regardless of where he's played at AAA this year. I'd put him on par with Coloballo, a nice bench bat that can be used to spot start when needed.

I liked the idea of adding Borbon for depth and possible fill in duty, but I don't think the Twins ever had the option of claiming him? Or am I remembering that wrong?

On Borbon...

The Twins could have tried to work a deal with the Rangers before he was waived. I think they had seven days to make a deal once DFA'd and before waivers. Once waived the Cubs had priority.

Borbon for Benson probably would have worked.

Umm, maybe if Gardy didn't want Arcia sent down, he shouldn't have sat him on the bench for nearly a week straight.

He left Ryan no choice at that point, he's too young to sit on the bench.

Think Arcia was benched under orders from Ryan to give him a reason to send him back to AAA to gain that 7th yr of service time

Pretty sure it was Ryan on the grassy knoll too, right? Regardless of what you believe, give Ryan a break, he saw some messed up stuff at Roswell in '47. That kind of thing sticks with you and forces you to make the worst baseball decisions in the history of the game time, after time, after time. So says the brain trust that is the TD message board anyway.

Yes, because all I care about is what is best for Hicks' long-term development. Thomas is what he is. He's not as bad as he was with the Twins last year, and he's probably not as good as he is playing in Rochester this year. But the most important thing is doing what is best for Aaron Hicks long term. What will help him be the best he can be?

I don't know, Nick. I gotta go with Badsmerf on this one.

The Twins do have viable corner OF available, but Thomas plays a lot of CF.

I would have no problem giving Thomas a shot. His OPS is over 1.0. Why not?

Another difference between Hicks and Arcia (other than having a viable replacement for one), is that Hicks is already 23. That extra year with Arcia would still let him become a FA and be younger than Hicks will be (assuming Hicks doesn't get sent down sometime in the next few years).

No question that Hicks needs some AAA time, but I would prefer Richardson over Clete Thomas but that's nitpicking on some wash-outs.

Problem is whomever it is, MN will lose another player off the 40 man roster (unless its Drew exposed as he wont be claimed). Cant keep giving away minor league players for no reason other than bad management.

Arcia was also hurt (right shoulder) & taken out of todays game.....yikes

I campaigned to acquire Borbon, a perfect placeholder option. It's amazing how threadbare the Twins are willing to make out of their once-defensive-rich CF depth chart.

But they have so much to show for Benson, Span, and Revere........

I'm not sure how exactly Span and Revere are being lumped into Benson. They have 3 pitchers to show for them. One is looking like a front of the rotation guy.

Which one is that?

The newest scouting reports on Meyer think that his ceiling is probably setup guy or closer.

Obviously I havent seen him pitch, but that's what some respectable scouts are saying apparently.

Meyer is taking his first crack at AA and he is essentially #2 in the Eastern League in FIP (2.42), tied with Kevin Gausman who just debuted last Thursday with the Orioles. I think it's a little soon to take any reports seriously that would make those remarks. Are you confusing Meyer with May?

Like I said, I'm only relaying what I've heard from guys who know a lot more about this than I do.

The reports are that his stuff is nasty, but he doesn't have a 3rd pitch to start in the big leagues at this point.

And no, I am not confusing him with May. This discussion is in the Meyer 'adopt a prospect' thread.

Well he is still a prospect, so he is working on developing that third pitch.

Yes, I am aware of that. The scouts mentioned in the adopt a prospect thread don't think he will though.

I guess I don't get why automatically assuming he will develop one is okay, but suggesting he might not gets you ripped.

Jason Parks and the "staff" of baseball prospectus, which I believe is headed by Kevin Goldstein, though it doesn't say who wrote that specific report.

Those are the 2 specific ones mentioned in the thread, with other posters saying they have also seen/heard the same thing elsewhere.

He's only 23 and 6'9". Young, tall guys already loaded with good stuff and physical talent certainly deserve the benefit of the doubt about their developmental ceiling. I think it's pretty much accepted gospel, that Meyer's height, and tall players in general, means they automatically take longer to refine their mechanics. For example, the video of Meyer I saw of him after the acquisition showed that his release point varied wildly from pitch to pitch
