Gardy: Sam Deduno to start on Friday in Detroit

At this point, almost anything is better than watching Pelfrey and Hernandez pitch batting practice (Worley is little better but I still hold out hope for him once his peripherals normalize).

Correia self-admittedly joined in for some BP fun, himself, last night.

If we're talking batting practice, no one exceeds Correia in our group...While Worley has given up more hits, Correia has the worst BAA. Out of 100 qualified pitchers, Correia ranks 91st in BAA. Ugh.

Correction...there was a page 3...Worley dead last in the majors #107 out of 107...Pelfrey worse than Correia...Correia still bad

I responded to Brock before reading your post. Good points, but that's where they stand now, check the trends, Correia is currently on pace regression in May to.... fully realzing a rediscovery of his inner Correia. Last night's disturbing performance was the exact opposite of how he pitched in April. Meanwhile, Worley has nowhere to go but up- hopefully his last outing is a reflection on some postive sideline adjustments he's made.

I don't mind Deduno getting the call first - if he can pitch like he did in the WBC, he looked pretty solid. You just have to live with his highwire act of walks. It just sucks if they keep Gibson on a strict innings limit (especially when he racks up 9 IP in his previous start, while throwing less than 100 pitches...)

Racked up 9 IP in 2 0f 3 previous starts.

Deduno ideally should have broken the year as a 4th or 5th starter, but for his WBC injury, so I don't really get anyone being mad at HIM for getting the call before Gibson. The reality is that we've had a pretty healthy rotation thus far, and that's not going to last. Correia, Pelfrey, Diamond, and Vanimal are not going to throw 200 IP this year. One of them is going to get blown up, or get hurt (three of them have recent arm issues, and the other is Kevin Correia).

Point being, there will be a chance for Gibson in the bigs at some point, and he's probably on an innings limit anyway. He's basically alternating good start-poor start right now, so I'm in no hurry to rush him to the Twins and get him torched.

Hey, I would have liked to see Gibson, just because I'd like to see Gibson. Nothing wrong with giving Deduno a shot though. I don't necessarily have high hopes for him, but if nothing else he is a change of pace from the junk tossers we have in the other 4 spots of the rotation.

Considering that with Deduno's tendency to high pitch counts and management's aversion to the same, it's possible we see a move to a 13 man staff to allow the bullpen some breathing room. If it was my call, I'd probably allow for Deduno to throw more pitches to get deeper in the game and not worry so much about reaching 100 pitches or whatever this years limit is. Not that I don't care about him getting hurt, but he's also not the type of prospect we have to over-protect.

This could unintentionally work out well for the club however. Hopefully Deduno pitches well and forces his way into a regular rotation spot. Then when the Super 2 deadline passes and the Twins can freely call on Gibson, one of the actual terrible vets will get pushed aside. If Gibson took Hernandez's spot, the Twins would probably give the vets much more leash seeing as Deduno isn't exactly a top prospect they NEED to make room for.

I completely agree. It's going to be a lot easier to show Pelfrey/Correia the door (likely Pelfrey) if Gibson is the one coming up.

Deduno, not so much.

He's little better than the rest of 'em but he had a strong start to the season so I don't expect to see him pushed out of the rotation any time soon.

Yeah, TR doesn't want to go out of his way to remind anyone it looks like he hung another Blackburn around his neck for the next 2 seasons...

I'm hoping like heck that KC can pitch well enough into the deadline and gives TR the chance to surgically remove that albatross.

Contribute in the future, yes. How does an inconsistent, recovering TJ-er with an inning limit matter so much more right now?

Why not see the 30 year olds and make a last determination if they can also contribute in the future? They don't turn in to pumpkins at 31...

So rather than seeing the good prospect pitch you'd rather see the 30 year old, consistently awful, still recovering from TJ, with a self-imposed innings limit?

Uh, yeah, I'll raise my hand for "no thanks"

According to the STrib, it's because Gardy "knows for a fact (the Tigers) don't like facing him."

They must absolutely hate it. Deduno has started against the Tigers twice, and given up 10 runs in 9.1 IP.

OK, then.....Would senility and dementia need to be added to your reasons for calling for Gardy's dismissal?

I'll settle for "questionable reasoning."

Just another example of how the current Twins staff/management still uses the "eye test" over statistics. Heck, these aren't even advanced statistics.

I think it's important to find out if Deduno is worth a damn thing; he's not going to be given a terribly long leach I imagine.

Damn, I thought leeching was abolished following the Renaissance. I guess it explains somethings about our medical staff...

Can't believe the resemblance didn't occur to me before...

Hypothetical conference call to Rochester:

Ryan: "Failed has Pedro Hernandez to learn the ways of The Force. To the minors he must go, and to the majors must come Sam Deduno.

Gene Glynn: "Uhhhh... ....well, hate to lose him, but Kyle Gibson has been throwing pretty well for us, sir."

Ryan: "The path to a more downward plane his fastballs must learn, or to The Dark Side will they find their way".

Gardy: "You ok, Terry? Would ya like some of the spare Eggwhite Mcmuffin in my pocket? The boys are still battling their tails off, and Gibby would look awfully good in a Twins uniform and let them know we're all about winning now. He's letting the defense make plays and keeping them in the game by working fast".

Ryan: "For 800 years have I managed this baseball franchise. My own counsel will I keep on who is to be promoted."

Jack Goin, former call center kid and current statistical analysis golden/whipping boy: "Deduno has Blackburn-esque non-K peripherals and an unsustainable strand rate. And hitters can hit his pitches in the zone with their eyes closed."

Ryan: "From fangraphs such things I could learn... if wanted to I had. Powerful with the Dark Side hitters like Darth Cabrera may be, but a strong influence Deduno's stuff will have on the weak-minded".

Jack Goin: "Why are you randomly swapping subjects, predicates, and other parts of speech? And who is 'Darth Cabrera' ?"

Ryan: "Because speaking like a wise, empowered, bald Star Wars character character I was."

Goin: "Never paid attention to Star Wars. Star Trek was better to the nth power. Also, are you starting to realize that Hicks is as unready as I warned you?"

Ryan: "To your desk you must return, and from it all your office possessions in a simulated wood-grain cardboard box you should place".

Gibson, bursting into Glynn's office after already finding out via Rick Anderson's tweet that he's not getting the call: "My arm is strong and I'm not afraid to face major league hitters!"

Ryan: "You will be. You...will... be".

The WBC seems like a lifetime ago. I am looking forward to seeing Gibson one of these days. But I had almost forgotton how much I enjoyed watching the WBC and seeing Deduno's sucess there. At that time I was curious to see what he might be able to do with the Twins this year so I hope he is now fully recovered.

Personally... I've been waiting for Deduno... I wish his control was better... But... He has stuff...

I don't see one starter on the staff with stuff right now. Give me some stuff.

I've been waiting for Deduno... I think we will all be looking forward to his starts for the rest of the year.

More so than anybody else's.
