Roster spot has opened up if the Twins wish to do so...

In a pattern, all-too-familiar in recent years, the decision has now been made for Darrin Mastroianni to have ankle surgery next Wednesday to remove a bone chip. FWIW, here's Rob Antony's vote of confidence comment:

"The stress reaction has healed some, but not perfectly," assistant general manager Rob Antony said. "The bone chip doesn't affect some people, but with him, it was close to the ligament, or something to that effect."

Rhett Bollinger says the Twins expect Mastro to be out at least six weeks. Characteristically bothersome, no question was apparently asked on if and when, and if not, why not? Mastroianni would be placed on the 60-day DL, which many of us predicted was inevitable a month ago.

No need/reason to add anyone to the 40 man roster until someone needs to be added to the 25 man roster.

Still, it would be nice to get an indication from the Spokesman on which direction the Twins are leaning and possibly intend to go with filling the spot, and who in turn, is vulnerable for potential replacement on the 25 Man.

From Bollinger's same article:

Despite the somewhat ballyhooed signing of a "fully healthy" Rafael Perez just before spring training, Rob Antony announced Perez was released today, as he hadn't matched the lofty expectations he himself had set for Perez at the time of the signing:

"It didn't look like he was going to be ready to come up here and help us," Antony said. "We just decided rather than continuing on with that, that we'd let him go and try to sign with someone else."

And besides the medical setback for Tim Wood, even more bad medical news for all those who held out hope that Rich Harden was going to soon ride to the rescue. This depressing quote from Antony:

"It's not going very well to be honest with you," Antony said. "We've backed him off a little bit and it's just a work in progress. We'll see where it goes from there."

The question I would have is Why would the Twins want to make that information available to the public? I mean, I think we can deduce that information, but the Twins have no reason to discuss it until it's needed. Guys not on the 40 man roster who could come up:

Sam Deduno, Andrew Albers - If there is a need for a starter or long reliever.

Clete Thomas was a possibility for CF until he got hurt.

If something happened to Wilkin Ramirez, or if there were an injury to Morneau, Chris Colabello could come up.
